Greta Neimanas (right) of the USA talks to one of the Irish riders in the track centre.
The disability event at the Welsh National Velodrome in Newport on Wednesday night may have been an international but it had the atmosphere of a local club run as the riders from around the world mingled in the track centre with much laughter and stories told and then went out to win on the track determined to win their event.
There were riders from the US, Australia, Ireland and Great Britain plus others from Wales and Britain, all out to get some racing in during the packed programme of events. With a dedicated band of volunteers there to help the riders, the night saw the normal series of time trials over various distances and also some great Tandem racing between both the men and women.. There was even a scratch race but for excitement, you can’t beat a close tandem race and there were plenty on the night.
Tandem Racing! Plenty of fast and close racing made for a good spectacle.
In the end, the night was dominated by the British team although there were plenty of other great performances from the riders from the other countries who were all able to warm up for the VISA Paralympic World Cup event on Friday afternoon at the Manchester Velodrome (starts at 1pm).
The Brits also broke several World records, unofficially, and one paring admitted that the same records are certain to tumble at the Manchester based World Cup which is a good reason for getting down to the Velodrome on Friday afternoon to witness the action. The VISA Paralympic World Cup is the biggest international annual multi-sport competition outside of the Paralympic Games and is being staged in Manchester, Great Britain in 2007 for the third year in succession.
Cyclists from Australia, Spain, Great Britain, Germany, Czech Republic, and Denmark are in the line up to compete. We'll have more on the build up for this event in the next week.
A strong Aussie squad was attendance.

GB Paralympic Team Manager Dave Mellor says of these events, "The Welsh GP and the VISA World Cup are very valuable and important events on the domestic calendar. Although there are no Beijing ranking points for these events, it gives us the opportunity in a patchy calendar to get our riders together and get some data under pressurised race conditions. Also it gives us the opportunity to showcase our riders on our home tracks which will hopefully inspire new athletes to become involved, especially with 2012 just around the corner."
