The Newport velodrome in Wales last night was host to many of the Worlds Best Paralympic cyclists as Great Britain and Australia came head to head in front of a host of VIPs including Alun Pugh (Welsh Minister for Sport) and the Mayor of Newport. A warm up event to the Paralympic World Cup in Manchester on Friday, there were World and British records as the riders didn't hold back in a long night of racing.
Barney Storey and Anthony Kappes are presented with their trophy at the end if the nights racing. More pictures in the galleries -- links at the top of the page.
At the end of the night, the honours seemed pretty even between Great Britain and Australia which is a credit to the riders from Down Under who have had little time to acclimatise and get over the jet lag before being thrown into a competition against a formiable Great Britain squad. Two of the highlights for the Brits were the World Record to Anthony Kappes & Barney Storey in the flying 200 (10.578) and then the British record to a swimmer dipping his toe into the world of cycling, Jody Cundy, who recorded a 1.14.110 for the Kilometre. The latter is a possible future addition to the Great Britain Cycling and will get another chance to shine on Friday at the World Cup.
The Irish go for a long one but GB's Barney & Anthony use their record breaking speed to get them on the line. More pictures in the galleries -- links at the top of the page.
Finishing at gone 11pm, the over riding memory was the kinship between the riders of all the nations competing which also including Ireland and Wales. Most of the racing comprised of time trials but there were some rider-on-rider contests like the Mens tandem where Anthony Kappes & Barney Storey took on Mark Kehoe & Malcolm Goggin of Ireland.
The British World record holders took the event two nil and their World Record in the qualifying showed how good their form is prior to Friday. After the event, Barney calmly described how the tandem started to slip a little on the track as they sped around it at 70kph adding that with more grip at Manchester, who knows whether the record will be broken again...perhaps. Barney then paid tribute to the progress that his stoker Anthony has made in the past year since arriving on the scene prior to last years Paralympic World Cup.
In the Women's Tandem, multi Athens medallists Aileen McGlynn (MBE) & Ellen Hunter came up against an Aussie team that also had success in Athens, Lindy Hou and Janelle Lindsay. The Brits triumphed 2:0 as they tactically held the Aussies on their hip around the steep bankings before unleashing their record breaking power to get to the line first in both heats.
The Aussies, expert riders in the handicap event, hold on to beat the two teams from GB in one of the final events of the night. More pictures in the galleries -- links at the top of the page.
The other multi rider event was a Scratch race and what an entertaining event that was. It may have only been 20 laps but perhaps that's why so many riders were willing to have a go. In the end though, a British rider who resides in the States, Mark Bristow held off the challenge of Aussie Peter Brooks in a side by side sprint.
It was a fine warm-up to the World Cup on Friday night at the Manchester Velodrome (http://www.visaparalympicworldcup.com/).
The field in the Scratch race, final event of the night, get under way with the race being won by Mark Bristow. More pictures in the galleries -- links at the top of the page.
