Ian Bibby leads the charge at the front of the race
The traditional post-Christmas Macclesfield Supacross is always a special event, with many riders using it as a warm-up ahead of the National Championships (Bradford, 10-11 Jan). The nationals often attract riders who have not ridden a full season of 'Cross and this adds an extra layer of unpredictability to the event.
It was great to see Liam Killeen back in action
And the Macclesfield Supacross threw up a couple of interesting pointers. Ian Bibby, who has only emerged from his post summer lay-off in the last couple of weeks was impressive in winning the event. Close on his heels was the ever-green Nick Craig, who may be approaching 40, but still seems to have the desire and fitness to equal most. The muddy Bradford course could well suit his skills and it looks like he's in good form with just a couple of weeks to go.
Killeen chases down Stuart Wearmouth
In third place and also looking in good fettle was Liam Killeen, making his first appearance of the season. Liam has gone close to winning the national title on a couple of occasions, only to fall foul of Roger Hammond. Again, the Bradford course may well be to his liking and his strength and bike handling skills are not in question. With time to sharpen himself further, he looks like another very strong contender.
First woman and a likely contender of the national title, Sue Clarke
Dan McLay was the first Junior home and now looks a strong bet for the national title. Just behind him were Geoff Giddings and Noel Clough, both likely to be contenders for the vets' title. Interestingly, 'Cross and MTB legend Barrie Clarke was also riding and although he finished with other-half, Sue, with the start list for the nationals still to be released, there will be speculation that he too might be taking a tilt at the vets' title.
