The seventh round of the SW Cyclo-Cross League took riders to the sunny surroundings of the South Dartmoor College in Ashburton.
In the main race, Steve Davies (CCSW) made a very determined push from the moment the starting hooter sounded, to take the first corner well clear of the rest of the field. Vin Cox (cyclo-cross.com) and Tim Carpenter (cyclo-cross.com) played a waiting game and Davies, though trying gallantly, never gained a significant advantage on the pair.
With two laps to go Cox upped the pace and Davies couldn't stay with him although he was more than strong enough to hold off Carpenter for the Vets' prize.
The compact circuit at South Dartmoor College provided an excellent challenge with its banks, off cambers and sand pit all providing thrills and spills aplenty. Sam Sparks (Unattched) was a worthy winner in the Juniors, expressing a liking for the circuit. Maddie Horton (Team Certini) was winner again this week in the Women's category but didn't seem to have her normal panache - maybe there wasn't enough mud!
In the post race discussion Cox was heard to say that Davies was going well today and that he is the 'coming man'. Cox won on this circuit last year, his only win of the season. Today's win is his fourth in this season so without doubt he is having a great year.
Above and below - the course didn't lack technical challenges

A lot of youngsters from the college took to the start line in the Youths' race. However visitor Jacob James (Halesowen CC) really took the race on, quickly powering away for a good lead. Regular slow starter Dan Nash (St Austell Wheelers) rode a steady race to take second place well ahead of Mark Percival (CCSW). The new faces, though finding the course hard in places, seemed to enjoy their race.
In the Under-12 race, Will Kelly (Mid Devon CC) returned this week to build on his win of last. Nathan Olsen (Duchy Pirates BMX) had other ideas and made Kelly work hard for his win. Kelly came home only just ahead of Olsen.
Looking forward to next week's South of England Championship, Maddie Horton will be hoping to defend her title from last year. In the Vets Carpenter, Davies & Pickering will be looking to challenge for honours. Steve Davies on current form might turn a few heads with a top three place a distinct possibility. Vin Cox, Roy Wyle Smith (if he has recovered from a heavy cold) and John Peters will be the main standard bearers in the Seniors race for the Southwest.
