With an uphill start, the big fields through out the day were soon strung out around the course in single file, criss-crossing the hill overlooking Mallory Park with its slippery off camber corners ready to catch out the unwary rider.

After rain in previous editions, the weather for the 2008 Mallory Park National Trophy stayed dry, although that didn’t stop the course being like a muddy skating rink, causing the downfall of many an experienced competitor.

With assistance from the East Midlands Development Agency, there were five continental professionals contracted to ride this Trophy round, including 2004 and 2006 winner, David Willemsens from Belgium. David had also won round two of this year's Trophy, held in Devon and went into the Elite men’s race as one of the favourites.

The course was slightly different to previous years but was still based mostly on the side of a hill overlooking the Mallory Park motor racing circuit with lots of off-camber riding to be done and, with the rain from previous days and weeks, there was still a lot of sticky mud around to make things slippery.

The mud however was not as bad as at Ipswich which was just as well as the race showers were quite a distance away after the Park decided they were not letting riders into the showers at the circuit due to some inconsiderate riders blocking the shower drains the year before with some bike washing!

The weather started grey and damp but soon the skies brightened up. With the smell of burgers and coffee wafting across to the finish line, the familiar sound of Hugh Porter echoing across the course, and the crowds of people visible on the hill, there was no mistaking this was a quality ‘cross event.

Mallory is often a hard race to call, and once again more than one leader’s jersey ended up in the mud as the course caught out some of the best. However, if there was one major misfortune to pick out, it would have to be Noel Clough, whose gears imploded within sight of the finish line and a near certain win went with them. But the main memory I’m left with was the sight of the series leaders crossing the line and tugging on their jersey to show what it means to be the wearer of the prestigious garment in a  sport that is growing in popularity as each season goes by.

Note: Photo galleries from the day's event will be posted Tuesday.

ELITE MEN/UNDER 23'S

20081116_Mallory_Trophy_01

French winner Nicholas Bazin (centre) has his arms full with the engraved trophy supplied by Shore Design (www.shore-design.com) and a big bottle of High 5 (www.highfive.co.uk). Second was Jody Crawforth (left) and third, Marius Gil (right).

The Elite men's event was the final race of the afternoon and you could sense the excitement in the air as spectators started to dash over the course to get to the best spots as the riders lined up and Hugh Porter went through the riders names.

It was probably the best line up so far in the trophy series this year, hence the long line of spectators on top of the hill where they could see the riders a number of times as the course came back and forth past the pits. And being on a hill, they could then look down on the finish straight and see the riders race past the podium as well. All it needed was a set of steps over the fences!

Delayed by 15 minutes, so the presentation to the Women and Juniors could be completed, at 2.30pm the race commenced and it was a group of riders six or seven wide which sprinted up the hill and towards the entrance to the off road section. Local rider Ben Roach got a good start and on top of the hill led the race from Jody Crawforth and Ian Wilkinson, with Nicolas Bazin already well up in fourth place.

Onto the side of the hill, with its off camber twists and muddy bends, Roach continued to lead from Crawforth and Mariusz Gil with yellow jersey Ian Field in 5th place. Crawforth soon took the lead though and Gil was on his wheel as the selection at the front started to form with the main players being Crawforth, Gil, Bazin, Field, Dave Collins, David Willemsens, Paul Oldham and Stuart Bowers.

The contenders for the victory in the back and forth section near the finish line.

With so many riders in contention, it was a battle royal up front but soon one rider started to make his move: French rider Nicolas Bazin, second to David Willemsens in Devon and a regular choice for the French National Team in this year's World Cup races, worked his way to the front of the race closely followed by Ian Field and the rest of the leading contenders. Bazin though had the skill and firepower to draw clear and was soon lapping the course alone, a good 15 seconds or so ahead of the rest of the leaders with Crawforth and Field looking strong.

Whilst Bazin had the race to himself out front, the chase group behind was together for a long time before it started to break up and Crawforth went clear with Gil a few seconds behind him. Slowly, the gaps between all the chasers started to grow and whilst there was never much between the riders between third and sixth, series leader Field was surprisingly dropping back and right out of contention, eventually finishing seventh.

The victory went to French rider Nicolas Bazin, 21 seconds ahead of Jody Crawforth who had done enough to take the leader’s jersey off the back of Ian Field.

Afterwards, I spoke to a few of the riders.

Nicolas Bazin (1st) “I am in good form from one week ago and it was a very good day for me. The course was very good, very difficult with the mud and it was very slippery. We have the same type of courses in France although they are flatter. The English races are very good for me but I don’t think  I can come again this year because  now I have a lot of races with the World Cup, French Cup and French Championships and other races near my house.”

Jody Crawforth (2nd, now series leader): “I was surprised today and didn’t expect to feel as good as I did as I haven’t been feeling that good this week. I went off on the first lap and when it’s slippery, it’s better to be careful. I started to feel good so I started to attack a few times and had a little crash.”

“Ian and the French guy then got away so I lost a little time. Then, trying to get back on to them, I had another little slide off. I caught Ian and then there were a few of us going round together and then towards the end of the second third of the race, I was trying really hard to get away and managed to do that on the long draggy bit up to the pits.”

“In the group, it was difficult to organise a chase because you’re all battling for position and that is why I tried to get away on my own so I could the course at my own pace. It’s good to have the jersey now and although it would have been nice to win today, I’ll settle for having the yellow jersey.”

JUNIORS & WOMEN

20081116_Mallory_Trophy_03

Dan Mclay (centre) who won the race alone ahead of Sam Harrison (left) and Tom Moses (right). 20081116_Mallory_Trophy_04

Sue Clarke (in yellow) was ever so pleased to hold  onto the series leaders jersey after a race of mishaps where she was second to Annie Last who mastered the conditions and Gabby Day was who was third. First veteran was Louise Day (right) and Ruby Miller was first junior (left). Far left is Tracy Croft, the East Midlands coordinator for the 2012 Games.

After the break in proceedings for lunch, the Junior and Women riders lined up for their races at the normal time of 1.15 with the juniors first to start. After the whistle had gone, the Junior riders charged up the hill. Out of the blocks well was a rider who had been winning on the track at Manchester the night before, Sam Harrison. He was charging up the hill alongside Luke Newby with the series leader Oliver Webster back in around seventh place. Worse was to come for Webster as he got caught up in a crash as they started the top of the hill section and gaps were already started to form as a half a dozen riders broke clear led by Dan McLay.

Once the juniors had been racing for a few minutes, the Women riders started their race and first away was Gabby Day with Isla Rowntree just behind and series leader Sue Clarke a few places back in fourth. In the juniors meanwhile, McLay continued to lead and was being challenged by David Nichols who was showing well in the early stages. These two were a few lengths ahead of Thomas Moses and Sam Harrison but as the race went on, Nichols dropped back and it was these three riders, McLay, Moses and Harrison who would dominate the race from then onwards.

The women's race to was being dominated by three riders as Gabby Day and Annie Last broke clear of the field with the luckless Clarke a few seconds adrift in third place after a fall. The die had been cast in both races and for Clarke, the early fall was followed by another and then another but each time she fought back to the leaders who at times were showing little appetite to attack the other and cat and mouse tactics came into play as they watched each other on the tarmac stretch of the race.

In both races, the leading groups of three riders continued to ride away from their rivals but soon the distance would take its toll and first McLay got clear of his nearest rivals and then Annie Last did the same and both riders went onto win their races alone, arms aloft. Afterwards I caught up with them to get their race stories.

20081116_Mallory_Trophy_74

Annie Last wins the race alone.

Annie Last: "It was a really good race for me. Back at the start, it got broken up straight away and the three of us broke clear. Then Sue kept trying to get away and we'd bring her back. The first time I went round on a practice lap I found out how slippery it was and so you had to really think about that when you were racing. You couldn't go flat out into the corners."

On where she got away, Annie explained “coming round one of the corners, Sue tried to ride it and I knew she was struggling each time, so I ran and got in front of her and jumped on the bike and pushed on from there and that was with two laps to go. I managed to get a gap then and keep it to the finish.”

“I started the cross season later than the others because I had to finish the mountain bike season first and I knew I wouldn’t have the form straight away but there is plenty more to come this season and I’ll keep going forward.”

20081116_Mallory_Trophy_72

Not for the first time, Sue Clarke gets tangled up in the ropes which she (and others) had trouble seeing into the sun.

Sue Clarke: “When Annie got a slight gap and Gabby was just behind me, I was thinking about the overall which is what I am more interested in. I knew that I had to beat Gabby at every race I can as she is a really talented rider. I don’t think today was her cup of tea but you have to take the points when you get them.”

“In a lot of ways, Annie did me a big favour taking first place points. I think once the  gap was there, I let it go and I played a more tactical race. I thought if it came down to a sprint, I was going to beat Gabby but on some of the bends, I was a little more confident than Gabby and got a slight gap on her. I then just went for it.”

“A lot of the problems I had was because of the way the course was taped out. I couldn’t really see where the rope was and a lot of the time I was cutting close to it to get a better grip on the grass and I was catching my STi leaver in it. There were a few times when I just had to take the risk and there were a few times when it didn’t come off.”

“It was a strange race, a real challenge with all the bends and not just a  pure fitness course which is probably not one that suited me so I am quite happy how it turned out. I would like to have had the win though!”

20081116_Mallory_Trophy_75

Local boy Dan Mclay wins the Junior race

Dan McLay: “It was really hard race. I got a gap at the start and they came back to me and it was a battle from then onwards. Before I started, I didn’t think it would suit me because of all the technical aspects but I was just pacing myself round the corners and then let my legs do it on the straights.”

“I think the key for me today was staying upright really. I just relaxed and put in blocks of effort and got away and held it. Getting the jersey too was really good. I don’t think Oli (Webster) had his best race and I think he’ll be coming back in the next rounds to try and win it back off me.”

“This is my midweek local circuit so I used that knowledge up this hill and knew the line to take to avoid the steep bits. It’s good too to be racing locally where everyone knows you and gives you a cheer.”

VETERANS (40+ and 50+)

20081116_Mallory_Trophy_05

L-R: Geoff Giddings who was second had done enough to keep the leader's jersey whilst Chris Young was pleased with the victory. The host club's Phil Roach capped off a good day for them with third place.

20081116_Mallory_Trophy_06

After a very interesting race in the over 50's, series leader Roy Hunt (centre) came from behind to beat Ipswich winner Ian Wright whilst Peter Wilkin was third.

Both these categories have been super competitive this year and Sunday at Mallory Park was no different. First away were the Over 40’s with Geoff Giddings in the yellow jersey and then a short while later the over 50’s where a battle royal was expected between Roy Hunt in green and Ipswich winner Ian Wright.

In the Over 40’s, the series leader Giddings got away well with all the favourites bunched close together as they got to the first corner on the uphill sprint to where the corner went off road. In the Over 50’s meanwhile, Roy Hunt too got a good start in his race and was just getting his wheel in front as they came under the start/finish banner. As the two races went off road, the tricky conditions soon started having their effect as gaps started to open as the pace was piled on as the course went up hill and riders crashed as they came back down on the grass.

Roy Hunt hits the front after the start of the over 50's.

The veterans (over 40's) get under way

Around the hill for the first time and Giddings was clearly visible in his leaders jersey  in second place behind Andrew Shaw followed by Chris Young and Phil Roach who were side by side battling for third position. Giddings soon slipped into the lead as they ran up one of the many parts of the course where it was almost impossible to ride and soon the yellow jersey had Clough breathing down his neck with a gap to Matthew Denby in third and Phil Roach leading Chris Young a few seconds back.

Roach though, riding for the promoting club Rugby Velo, was on a ride and had soon jumped away from Young and was with the two leaders to make a three some out front. In the over 50's meanwhile, the leaders were in amongst the over 40's but the leader was easy to see as Ipswich winner Ian Wright came through a few riders ahead of series leader Roy Hunt.

Halfway into the race and Clough made his move and he came up the long gravelly  climb towards the grassy bank again with 50 metres on Giddings who in turn was clear of Young whilst Roach had dropped to fourth just off the back of Young. Whilst Clough held his 50 meter lead well, Giddings was never far away and whilst we waited at the finish line as the riders raced around the course for the final time, Clough came past and the loud noise of his derailleur breaking could be heard by all and he was soon off his bike.

20081116_Mallory_Trophy_84

Noel Clough opens up a gap on Giddings after the two of them were inseparable at the start of the race

20081116_Mallory_Trophy_82

Less than a quarter of a lap from the finish and Noel Clough finds his derailler broken and Giddings sliding past to take the lead only for Chris Young to catch Giddings in the final 400 meters and win the race.

No sooner was he off the bike than Giddings was sliding past and seemingly on his way to victory. But no, Chris Young was now only a few seconds behind him and as they came into the off road section within sight of the finish line, Young came past Giddings and sprinted up the finish straight to win narrowly from Giddings. Whilst Clough finished the race on foot, Roach came into the finish for third  and Matthew Denby fourth before Clough crossed the line in fifth.

20081116_Mallory_Trophy_81

Chris Young comes through at the end and pips Geoff Giddings

Talking to Chris Young after the race, he explained “I heard some one in the pits yell out ‘come on Chris, you can have this’ with a lap to go. I thought Noel’s got a good lead but I’m closing on Geoff and getting stronger. I felt second was achievable and then I saw Noel off his bike!” Geoff then seemed to go a bit harder so I had to go a bit harder too!”

“I prefer to ride on my own in a race and I was enjoying that, gauging the speed around the corners and getting round smoothly rather than going too fast and loosing loads of time. Over the last bit though I had to pull out all the stops because Geoff really kicked and it was all or nothing really. I thought I have got to get him before we get onto the road because the winner was going to be the first out of the corner.”

“Today’s course was very technical and that’s the thing about ‘cross, its horses for courses and I have to say I always like it when it’s a bit slippery and muddy. Last week we had a local race in the woods and that was good for bike handling because usually a lot of it is around playing fields and it can be a bit boring!”

On the fact the category is very competitive this year, Chris replied “I think everything is. Up in Yorkshire the races there are really getting popular and there are  a lot of people doing it and its good to see that there are a lot of kids getting into itas well. Hopefully it will get a bit more creditability!”

20081116_Mallory_Trophy_80

Roy Hunt all fired up after winning the over 50's, showing just what it means to hold the leaders jersey for the series.

Roy Hunt (over 50 winner) “This category is ever so hard this year. Every one of them are good riders and I have to fight hard every race. Ian got a good gap at the start there and I was beginning to think it was over and then I had some luck and he had some bad luck and the gap closed. I then put my head down and managed to get a few feet in front of him and that became a few yards and I carried on.”

On the course, Roy said “I think it was superb today. It was nice to have a bit of everything – technical, a bit of road, ups and down – it was a great course. I’m looking forward to Rutland now because it should be really good. You’d expect Colin Clews to come up with a great course so it should be interesting – it’s a great series all round this year.”

20081116_Mallory_Trophy_83

The course was ever so slippery and this was one of many many falls on the day.

YOUTH RACE

20081116_Mallory_Trophy_90

Youth race is under way!

Kicking off the day at 10.30 am was the Youth race and after the charge up the Mallory Park straight and under the finish line gantry, the field was already well strung out as it came to the twists and turns on the side of the hill where the yellow jersey Max Skyes fell when he was in second place and lost a lot of places.

The pace as ever was soon being forced by Joshua Papworth with a small group of riders managing to open up a gap to the rest and ever present was Hugo Robinson who was seemingly biding his time. As the group at the front got smaller and smaller, Robinson was never far away despite Papworth doing his level best to get away. Halfway into the race and it was Papworth and Robinson leading by a few seconds from a string of riders threatening to get back up to them should the leaders slip up.

It was a difficult line to ride for the two leaders, on one hand trying to get away from the other but on the other making sure they stayed upright as one mistake would be costly. It the end it was Robinson, who for a long time had waited his moment and when the opportunity came to take the lead on the final lap, he did so with skill and precision in the tricky conditions as he made each pedal stroke count to put 16 seconds into Papworth who after a race of aggression finally had nothing left to give to challenge for the win.

20081116_Mallory_Trophy_9620081116_Mallory_Trophy_97

Hugo Robinson wins the Youth event. Right: Max Skyes was equally pleased to retain his leader's jersey after finishing third.

In third place was the series leader Max Skyes who had fought hard all race to get back into the podium places and as he crossed the line arms aloft, tugging his leader’s jersey, it was easy to sense what that ride meant to him as he did enough to keep the jersey.

Not so lucky was Hannah Payton who finished well down on girls winner Lucy Garner and a rider who finished a place ahead of Hannah in the race, Bethany Crumpton, was given the jersey as she now lead the series by two points with Garner in third. First Under 14 was Harvey Lowe who did enough to take that category’s leader’s jersey off the shoulders of former leader Harry Franklin.

Afterwards, I spoke to Ipswich rider Hugo Robinson. “It was very technical” he explained after getting his trophy. “You had to run half the course it was so technical and there was no traction for the back wheel on the banks. The first lap was vital. I got an okay start and was seventh coming into the first  proper corner but after three or  four corners, I was up to third because there were so many crashes”.

20081116_Mallory_Trophy_92

Josh Papworth leads eventual winner Hugo Robinson

“I took it easy and ran the first couple of corners because everyone was backing up with the crashes. I found the course came easy to me today although the hardest bit was the running on the banks. I was on Josh’s back wheel most of the time and it didn’t occur to me to challenge him, or get ahead of him. I was just trying to hang onto his wheel and then he started to slow down and I decided to attack and low and behold, I got a gap.”

“I got past him just before the second pits up the grass bank, got through on the inside on one of the hairpins and never saw him again.”

Which way did he go! The course went back and forth all over the side of the hill at Mallory Park

... and poor Lucy Garner was still hurting in  major way after the finish and victory was hers. She finished 18th overall in the race with 56 finishers, a very good ride by the young girl going places in the sport.
