Record breaking Jebb makes it seven in a row

Rob Jebb (Wheelbase) was in record breaking form for the 46th annual Three Peaks Cyclo-Cross in North Yorkshire this weekend. This epic 38 mile cyclo-cross event attracted a field of 500 riders to race over the imposing moorland hills of Ingleborough, Whernside and Pen y Ghent. World Class fell runner and occasional bike rider Jebb beat his own course record by 40 seconds and claimed the record of seven consecutive victories in the race.

The weather and conditions were near perfect for an attempt on the record. A cool temperature of about 14c, dry clear blue skies and hardly any sign of wind. The tracks and paths across the upper parts of the course were mostly dry, unusually for this part of the world these conditions remained for the duration of the race. With organiser John Rawnsley changing the starting format to allow all riders to set off at the same time Jebb, Nick Craig (Scott UK) and the other favourites were gridded on the front line of the 500 starters. In previous years the elite men had to start behind the vets and some riders had complained it caused overtaking problems on narrow parts of the circuit. Jebb, Craig and the other fast men had no reason to complain this year as the lead car raced through the clear roads of Horton in Ribblesdale in the neutralised road section to the foot of Ingleborough.

The climb of Ingleborough starts on a relatively easy tarmac track up through Gill Garth farm. Jebb and Craig hit the track in the front group and immediately began to move ahead. Through the farm yard and onto the grass moorland and Jebb moved ahead of Craig. By the time Jebb had ridden 1 mile up Ingleborough he was already 15 seconds ahead of his nearest rival. That was the closest anyone got to Jebb for the whole of the race.

With the top ten riders safely through the long line of club riders began to battle it out on Ingleborough

The beautiful early autumn sunshine had brought out a big crowd for the race and most of them had made their way to Ribblehead Viaduct to see the riders descend off Whernside. The slim figure of Rob Jebb could be seen swooping down the hillside weaving in and out of the crowds lining the tracks. As he passed the Settle to Carlisle railway viaduct his lead on Nick Craig had increased to over 5 minutes. Lewis Craven (Wheelbase) was the third rider off Whernside and he was 11 minutes behind his team mate. Andy Peace (SIS) was the fourth rider off Whernside and looked to be in a good position to take the vets title.

With Stephen Bottomley (Crosstrax) in determined mood about to move up a few places

With Rob Jebb electing to switch bikes for the road sections he was sure to increase his lead on the chasers who all stayed on cyclo-cross tyres, but as Andy Peace would comment later 'he could be riding a Raleigh Chopper, he would still win'. With the four leaders spread out over 11 minutes the next five riders were having a close race. Noel Clough (Feitsen Tempo), Stephen Bottomley (Crosstrax), Stuart Reid (Wheelbase) and Geoffrey Beetham (Retrobike.co.uk) all came off Whernside within 3 minutes of each other.

The road section from Ribblehead to Horton in Ribblesdale gave the riders a chance to take on gel bars and drink. The nice weather had brought out the crowds but an additional hazard for the riders were the dozens of middle aged men on motorbikes illegally racing on the highway. One unlucky motorcyclist had run out of road near Selside and the Police and Ambulance crews had to slow down the cyclo-cross riders as they passed the accident scene.

At the foot of the final climb to Pen y Ghent Rob Jebb was on track to beat his own record. The dry and rocky lane from the road in Horton up to Pen y Ghent is 85% rideable, the main problem for any rider on this climb and descent is punctures. Jebb knew that if he was to beat the record he had to limit his chances of punctures and mechanicals. With a large support team he had helpers placed at strategic points on the descent of Pen y Ghent, luckily for him he had no need of any assistance and rode the whole race without a puncture or mechanical problem. To help him achieve the record he had raced into a position where he was so far in front of the main body of riders his descent from Pen y Ghent was on clear tracks. At the foot of the last hill with only 3 miles of road section to the finish at Helwith Bride he had a lead of 7 minutes on Nick Craig. Andy Peace was the 3rd rider off Pen y Ghent, 14 minutes behind Jebb. With Lewis Craven losing his place to Peace he would have to settle for 4th place in Helwith Bridge.

The only downside to winning the Three Peaks is the crowd at the finish for the 1st rider back is tiny. The thousands of spectators and helpers and 499 other riders are still on the course, including your reporter. So we will just have to imagine Robb Jebb racing the last couple of miles into Helwith Bridge knowing he was close to establishing a new record. Jebb made the last turn into the finishing funnel directed and cheered by a lone marshal, as he crossed the line he raised seven fingers indicating his new record of consecutive wins, and allowed himself a self-satisfied smile for a job well done, before dashing across the gravel to get into the Helwith Bridge Inn before the crowd of fell-running-cyclists arrived.

At the finish the top three riders were Jebb, Craig and Peace. Lewis Craven had a battle for 4th place with Stephen Bottomley (Crosstrax) with Craven holding the Leeds rider off by 2 seconds. Noel Clough and Stuart Reid had a similar battle for 6th and 7th place with Clough just managing to stay ahead of the Wheelbase rider.

Organiser John Rawnsley appealed for help to organise the race next year

The Three Peaks race has grown in popularity over the last 10 years and organiser John Rawnsley admitted to the crowd at the presentation that he is finding it increasingly difficult to promote the race. He appealed for new blood to step forward and help him establish a race committee to promote next years event, it's a mammoth job but hopefully someone will step in to help keep this classic race on the calendar for many years to come.
