Cyclo-Cross National Trophy Round 1: Abergavenny

It was one of the warmest and sunniest weekends of the year. So that can only mean one thing: it's winter and it's 'cross time! It certainly was a balmy day out in Abergavenny in more ways than one. Whilst heading for the venue, a leisure centre and the scene of many previous muddy battles, riders had to battle with culinary thoughts as they passed the annual food festival that was running in Abergavenny. The racing at the opening round of the National Trophy Cyclo Cross Series was certainly fast - perhaps the riders were looking to get off their bikes to soak up the sun and head out to the festival!
Lewis Craven, left, looks delighted at the prospect of a new season - Ian Field looks merely rueful
The many seasoned riders in attendance knew what lay in wait, but I don't think many were prepared for riding this course in bone dry conditions. A tight twisty course with lots of deceptive climbing meant no let up, as each pedal turn counted in the battle to stay in contention. Fast and furious it most definitely was.
For the youth races in the morning the temperature just about managed a respectable 15? C with the heat of the day rising nearly as quickly as the pace in each race. As the Youth and under 14 riders got underway, it was soon clear that after a disappointing and frustrating mountain bike season, Max Sykes was back to his winning ways. Taking the initiative, the VC Deal rider made the moves, with a cold-afflicted Hugo Humphreys and a newly shorn Joshua Papworth keeping him company, whilst Alistar Slater hovered just out of contention for the first few laps.
Above and below, action from the Youth race
Papworth made a few attacks but it wasn't until an incident with the hurdles that Sykes managed to get away. Then, when a crash on a corner gave him even more of a gap, Sykes just ran with it taking a much yearned for and well deserved win. Slater dug deep and managed to get past Papworth in the closing stages to take 2nd while Papworth had to be content with 3rd.
An eager Harry Franklin took the under 14 boy's win whilst Saskia Hook took the under 14's girls race. MTB star Bethany Crumpton, who was unbeaten in the National XC series this year, had to settle for an uncharacteristic 2nd as she found her 'cross legs, with Lucy Garner taking a convincing win in the youth girls.
Next up it was those grand old men of the racing community, the veterans, getting stuck in. The vet's races are some of the most competitive throughout the series and 2008-9 looks like serving up some more quality racing. Last year's series runner up, Noel Clough, came armed with a new strategy: go from the gun and don't look back! It's a simple but affective plan that worked like a dream leaving the rest of the field in chase mode.
Geoff Giddins, left, and Matt Denby chase during the vet's race
Arch rival and defending series champion, Geoff Giddings, paired up with Matt Denby but it was soon clear that these two were fighting for the runner up spot, as Clough wasn't slowing for anyone. Giddings and Denby simply couldn't make any impact on his ever-expanding lead. So Clough eased to the win, whilst just under a minute later Denby charged for the line, out sprinting Giddings to claim second place.
Nole Clough looks happy with the win in the Vet's race
In the over 50's it was a case of familiar 'old' faces mixing it with some welcome new. After a lack-lustre mountain bike season where he suffered quite a few defeats, it was good to see the normally invincible Roy Hunt back to his best, eager for more medals and jerseys. Out to stop the Hunt train was long-time adversary Barry Kipling, but also the man who dealt out all the misery at XC racing, Ian Wright, making his debut at CX in a spangly new skinsuit!
Things didn't start well for Hunt with an unshipped chain on the first lap, but in true Hunt fashion he dug deep and was soon fighting his way back up through the field and back into contention. Just over 45 mins of racing later and Hunt the winner was back! He took the win leaving Wright in second, whilst Kipling took a close third, narrowly out-sprinting Malcolm Cross.
Dan McLay takes the Junior win, with Tom Moses, obscured, just behind him in second
After a quick break in the proceedings, during which the under 12's got stuck into their own race, and the rest of us downed a cuppa or two, it was soon time to get back to the action.
Another close battle unfolded in the junior race with Daniel McLay, Thomas Moses and Will Verney quickly opening up a gap and leaving the rest of the field in chase mode. The skilful Moses and Verney worked the corners with ease, leaving McLay to use his road strength to fight back on the straights. It was anyone's guess who would take this one! As the race came into the final stages Verney found the early high pace taking its toll and he struggled to stay in contention. Meanwhile, Moses and McLay took the race to the wire with a delighted McLay taking the sprint and the win.
Isla Rowntree and Scott Thwaites
Women & Juniors
Starting half a lap behind the juniors, the senior women were soon mixing it up on the fast course. 'Cross specialist Gabby Day took the lead with apparent ease on the first lap and spent the rest of the race fending off her challengers. In hot pursuit were Paula Moseley, Isla Rowntree and junior star Ruby Miller.
Fifteen year old Miller started well, hanging onto Moseley's wheel for 3 laps until a crash on a corner left her shaken (and perhaps a little stirred!) and off Moseley's wheel. She was now firmly in Rowntree's sights. Using her silky bike handling skills Rowntree made Millar work every step of the way as the youngster fought to stay with her. All the while, Rowntree slowly concentrated on reeling in Moseley.
Gabrialla Day out on her own in the woods!
However Moseley hung on grittily to take second behind a dominant Day, while just 6 seconds later Rowntree came home in third, relegating Miller to fourth by just 3secs. Young Ruby could at least console herself with the junior win and, talking to he after the race, she was confident enough to have hopes of a senior win later in the series as she comes into form. Sue Wood took the honours in the women's vets race.
Senior Men & Espoirs
Finally it was time for the senior men and espoirs to race. There was a very strong line up, with last year's series winner Paul Oldham keen to get off to a good start despite suffering from a cold. Out to stop him were SIS/Trek team-mates Dave Collins and Ian Wilkinson, plus Ian Field, keen to show his best form in his first senior year. A dark horse was Belgian competitor David Willemsens.
Rob Jebb warmed up for next week's 3 peaks with 8th place - Luke Moseley (right) gets airbourne
From the start, Oldham opened up the pace, powering up the climbs and stringing out the field behind him. Soon a tight group formed up front containing Oldham, Collins, Wilkinson, Field, Willemsens, Jody Crawforth and Stuart Wearmouth, with Rob Jebb just dangling of the back. With attacks coming thick and fast at the front, the group started to whittle down with both Wearmouth and Collins losing contact. The pace remained high until, with just a couple of laps to go, Field made his move, attacking just after the pits and forging a small lead. From then on it was just a case of hanging on, which he managed to do as he eased to his first senior win in the series by 10 seconds.
Behind Field the race was on for second with Oldham and Willemsens forced to settle it in a tight sprint which Oldham took it by a whisker.
Ian Field claims the first round win in the Senior Men
There was a very welcome return to the 'cross scene for the talented Scott Thwaites: in his own words "not quite race-ready" he started under no illusions and rode a confident, comfortable race. He was central to the battle to be the top Espoir riders, which involved three riders, Scott himself, his brother Mark and Anthony O'Boyle. These three rode in each others pockets until Scott made the winning move, making a dig and taking it through to the win. Brother Mark took second, leaving O'Boyle to take a hard earned third.
So that was sunny Abergavenny. All the action now moves on to round two in Devon on 5th October: there's bound to be more exciting racing with lots of scores to settle and points to win as the series begins to take shape. Being British, it'll also be interesting to see what weather is served up - will this belated Indian summer continue, or will the "summer" rains return with a vengeance?
Vin Cox's "from the saddle" video
Senior men's race competitor Vin Cox rode the race with a handlebar-mounted video camera. He's editied the resulting footage down and kindly sent us the link - it's an interesting perspective on the hectic experience of riding top-level 'Cross.

Post-Race Rider Comments:
Max Sykes - Youth winner
It's been a long time coming but it finally looks like I'm back on form at last! It was a tough race, I led for the first lap, then Josh (Papworth) attacked and was so strong, luckily on the second lap I got him on the hurdles and there was something going on behind me, so I took that opportunity to attack, the other two pushed it too hard on the corners chasing me and both fell off which gave me an even bigger gap! Then it was just a case of staying upright for the last two laps, which wasn't easy. It was a hard course, it didn't give you many places to sit up and take a breather, even coming round the tight corners they drag so much coming out of them it was tough, and being so many it takes it out of you, by the end of the race I was knackered! I wanted to come out and show I could do it today and it helped by winning by such a good margin. Since the last 'cross season I've been struggling with a viral infection and my mountain bike season really didn't go very well for me, I did a couple of good rides but nothing like my true form showed, I got a cracking 2nd in the XC National Champs and now this win today, so it looks like I'm finally back on track! It's not through want of trying either - I've been training so hard and it's just not had an effect up till now and at last it's paid off. Hopefully this will set my mark for the rest of the 'cross season and I'll be keeping the jersey!
Harry Franklin - Under 14's winner
That was hard, I nearly lost it too on the last lap: I came off at the hurdles and Harvey Lowe who was close behind nearly overtook me, but luckily for me he had a mechanical, so I took the win. I tried to lead from the front but crashed on the first corner, then I was nearly caught but I pushed on, I was riding with the top youths but I slowly fell off their pace but I went on to win my race.
Lucy Garner- youth girls winner
I had quite a strong start today so I managed to get out in front pretty early on; my start definitely gave me an advantage. 'Cross is always hard, I've done a few before so I knew what to expect, I just went as hard as I could and just tried to keep the gap I had on Beth (Crumpton). I was quite worried about Beth, she's definitely got faster after a season of mountain biking, but I managed to hold her off and get the win, so yeah really pleased with that.
Noel Clough - Vets winner
I like this course. I won here last year - it's a nice hard course and a bonus with the sun shining I was feeling good out there. Last year I rode with the bunch for the first couple of laps but that was a mistake, so I've now decided that riding hard from the front works best for me and so I just went for it today and it did work! I kept an eye on my chasers, and kept my pedals on the gas on the hard bits and eased slightly on the easy bits. Hopefully this year will go right for me and I aim to keep that jersey!
Roy Hunt - Grand Vet winner
I seem to have spent a long time in the wilderness this year, these last 6 months, well you wouldn't believe it, so to get a win at last yeah it's good. I kinda messed things up this year in one way or another so it's good to be back out in front again. I didn't have the best of starts, my chain came off after just a quarter of a lap and I was quite a way down on the field, so I had to fight really hard to get back, but strangely I felt really good having to push myself so hard. I knew I had something in the legs today so I went with it. Once I got back to the front I was 'yeah let's go for it.' There was tough competition out there, it's not going to be an easy ride this year. I'm sure when Ian (Wright) finds his 'cross legs he'll be pushing me even harder and of course Barry (Kipling) is always up there snapping at my heels. Let's hope the next one will be a bit muddier then it'll be even more fun.
Ruby Miller - junior women winner
That was a good race, I started and thought I'll see how long I can stay with the bunch and everyone was putting the power down, so I thought well I might as well get up near the front or everyone will get away. I managed to get up to Paula (Moseley) as Gabby (Day) was getting away. I stayed with Paula until the third lap when I fell on a corner and was left a bit shaken and Paula just got away. Isla caught me so I just stuck to her wheel with the thought of coming round her on the last lap, I had a dig coming through the trees but she got me in the end. She's just amazing at cornering; I was just losing her on every corner and had to work really hard to get back to her. I'm really pleased with the result though it was so hard; hopefully I'll just keep improving over the season and hopefully be looking to take a senior win if I can.
Daniel McLay -Junior winner
That was a really closely contested race, lots of attacks constantly throughout the race. I was always on the back foot out there really, Tom (Moses) and Will (Verney) were going round those corners a lot faster than me, I just had to use my road strength to get back on and played it right to the finish and got the win. By the end I was getting more of a hang of getting round those corners and just enjoyed it, especially as it was so close out there. I was pretty happy to finish with a sprint, that's one of my strengths; it's nice just to win; however you do it. This has given me the confidence for the rest of the season and hopefully it'll just go on from here.
Gabby Day - senior women winner
That was quite hard, especially being out there on my own, you have to keep on pushing, you can't give up as the people behind you are working really hard so you have to keep away and work hard in doing so. It's a great circuit as you can see people and see where they are in relation to you, which helps. I just wanted to go as hard as I could and just keep that going and it worked. I've been training hard for this season but the first race is always the hardest as you never really know how well you're going until you're actually out there racing. It's very strange finishing a race this clean!
Sue Wood - women's' vets winner
It was a good field today much bigger than last year, which is excellent. Fantastic race, I was absolutely terrified before I started though, I was so nervous! Great course, a bit slippery on some of the corners but you just have to take it easy and know when to push it. I had great fun racing some of my team mates out there Rachel Fenton and Rachel Moss. I got Rachel but couldn't quite get Moss, but no worries there's always next time! Chuffed to take the win, it seems the older I get the faster I get, so I'll be back for the next round, especially as the whole family are involved, both my husband and my son race too, so no excuse not to come and do these!Off the start and Dave Collins, centre right, wins the contest for the best face
Paul Oldham leads Jody Crawforth and David Willemsens
Ian Field - Senior Winner
I was biding my time out there: it was too fast to try and go early, the course is just so fast it was a huge effort just to get a tiny gap and there's only one place you can really get away which is in the pits area and just after that there's a hard section. I attacked there and gave it full gas and hoped it was enough and then just had to hang on for a lap. 'Cross racing you always have to use your head, it's only an hour: even if you are the strongest rider you have to make all your efforts count. I was quite surprised we didn't have a bigger lead group out there 'cos it didn't feel like we were going that hard but Paul (Oldham) kept digging on the climb, but you could see he was struggling. Willemsens was struggling round all the corners and then Paul was just so strong in a straight line but I held my nerve and made my move at the right time and got that win.
I wanted the win, you get a nice jersey to start the next round in, and it means I've won a senior Trophy now for the last 4 years in a row and no one else has done that so yeah I think I'll win a few more this year. I want to win the series this year.
Scott Thwaites - Espoir winner
It's good to back out there again and I really enjoyed it today. I haven't done any 'cross training this season yet, I did a few crits in the summer and the junior tour of Wales but yeah it's all good. I've applied for a sports scholarship at college so I have to do a bit of riding now to keep them happy really. I felt good today, I rode nice and steady all the way, I didn't try and go too hard at the start, I just kept it rolling really then with just 3 laps to go, the 3 of us were still together so I thought I'd make a dig and I managed to split it up a bit and yeah held it till the end. I didn't have any expectations today I had no idea if I'd be anywhere near my brother, I just rode my own race, really steady so yeah I'm really pleased to have taken the win. I think Mark was happy to take 2nd, he's not really in form yet either, he's going over to Belgium in a few weeks so he's just preparing for that so I don't think he's too bothered about the races over here. I think I'll do the rest of the season now, I'll have to check with my parents to see if they don't mind taking me there, but apart from that yeah I'll give it a go and if I can defend the jersey in the next few rounds I'll be very happy.
