Introduction
Day 1 of the British Cycling national Cyclo-Cross Championships saw four riders crowned champion for their category in an exciting days racing at Sutton Park. The Veterans Over 50 Championship was won by Roy Hunt whilst in the next race, the Youth Championship, Luke Gray crossed the line first. It was then the turn of the Under 23 Men to do battle and Ian Bibby was the victor of this event for the second year in a row. The final race of the day saw Stephen Knight win the right to wear the champions jersey in the Veterans 40-49 Championship. British Cycling was there to see the races unfold.
With the sun shining for most of the day, the crowds cheering the riders on was good and is expected to be even bigger for day 2.

Peter Harris (2nd), Roy Hunt (1st) and Peter Smith (3rd) in the Over 50 category and the race overall.
Rider Reactions
Roy Hunt: “I made a few mistakes at the start but it came back together after that. I was glad to get away after putting the hammer down but could feel Peter breathing down my neck for at least three laps. I think I didn’t do enough laps before the race to get the speed round the corners right and made a few mistakes but that’s the way it goes sometimes. When you compare this course to what we have up north, its unbelievable. I didn’t have to get off, big ring all the time -- we don’t have enough of this type of course.”
Peter Harris: “I was up for this one. The last month I have been training with Nikki and stuff and it was hopefully for this and hopefully I’ll go to Mol for the Worlds and get a bit of a result at the Worlds. It’s a nice start to the season. The course was very fast and flowing today.”
Peter Smith: “I was second in a trophy but I haven’t done any off road stuff for a long time and it was nine years ago I did any ‘cross seriously. So when I got second in the first Trophy, I thought great but the more technical the courses got, the more out of practice I could see I was. I came here today to do what I can. I knew the course would not be as muddy as normal. I got here late and only managed to do one lap before the start and as a result, I nearly came off a few times through the woods. I got stuck behind riders early on but once I got past them, I was okay. I would like to have been a bit closer to second but I don’t know about first….”

Roy Hunt (left) and Peter Harris (right) dominated the Over 50 race and aside from some early mistakes, Hunt was always in control whilst Harris had his best result for the winter season.
Peter Smith who is making a comeback in 'cross, had a battle on his hand for third but managed to draw clear towards the end.

Rider Reactions
Luke Gray (winner): “I had a bit of a problem at the start and slipped on the pedals. I tried to make up some time in the first corner but the early laps were very hard and fast. I was able to make time up on the technical sections but found the straight sections quite hard. I feels good to have won this after winning the Under 14 title and then missing the Under 15 one last year. With all the corners, the course was very technical and you had to be careful because of all the roots on the corners.”
Sam Harrison (2nd): After leading early on, he says of losing the lead, “I was a bit rubbish on the technical bits. I would pile my way down the straights and then be rubbish in the corners because I don’t do much cross. I just jump off the track or the road and do it. It was good though and I’m pleased with how it turned out. It is a very different type of pain this event being flat out all the time on your own.”

Ian Bibby is delighted to beat Ian Field for the title in the Under 23 Men's race. This was fought out by these two riders who only had World Championship bronze medallist David Fletcher (Junior MTB Worlds 2007) for company for most of the race and he yoyo'd a lot of the time after a fall in the early laps of the 50 minute race. The challengers to these three all lost time and were led by Belgium based Alex Atkins who had a short battle with Mark Thwaites with Atkins crossing the line clear for fourth whilst Thwaites was 5th.
Rider Reactions
Ian Field: “I just went out to try and win the race. Everyone was going to look to me to be out there so I took it on from the front and managed to reduce the size of the group and then hit them as many times as possible. I managed to get small gaps but it was real windy out there.”
Ian then admitted that going from a full time rider to one that now works in the building trade, that it’s made staying at the top harder. “I stopped working just before Christmas to concentrate on riding my bike a bit for the worlds. Before that though it was about trying to ride the bike as much as a I could in the morning and then later on ride to work. Having a physical job I think just helps make me stronger and I don’t have to pay to go to the gym!”
On his goals, he says “the Cyclo-Cross Worlds in three weeks time which is said to be on a really fast course and that should suit group racing so hopefully I should be able to sit in a group and get a decent result like a top 10 or top 15” Then, I am looking for a team for mountain biking so if anyone wants to pay me a bit of money as well as give me a bike and a shirt, get in touch. I’d like to do the first three World Cups plus all the NPS rounds and I’d love to go to the Worlds”.
Ian Bibby: “It was pretty hard out there today on this course and very windy. It was very hard to get away. I knew Ian was going to be my main rival, him and Fletcher were the riders I was most worried about. Field took it out quite hard so I went with him and had a few goes at getting away but it was so windy, it was hard to stay away so it ended up being quite tactical. I was pretty confident if it was a sprint. It’s really good to retain the title.”
David Fletcher: “It is always good to get a podium place. This is my first major race also as an Under 23 rider so it is good to get a medal. It started off quite fast with Ian on the front and then us three got away and then I had an off a few laps in and lost them. I was just elastic banding them the rest of the race. My training for the 2008 MTB Worlds starts soon and have a few road camps coming up.”

After a brief spell out front alone, Geoff Giddings is joined by teammate and local rider Stephen Knight and they proceed to hold off last years champion Chris Young who had his work cut out holding odd the likes of Noel Clough and John Shaw.
Rider Reacton
Stephen Knight: “I’m really please with the result and surprised to be honest. I Geoff has a strong sprint and he was on my wheel with a lap to go. I kept trying to get on his wheel to be honest but he wouldn’t come through! We didn’t have any team tactics and it was about riding our own race really. Geoff managed to get away and then halfway through the race, Chris Young and his group was starting to catch Geoff and I was starting to catch Chris.”
“I was trying to think what to do like getting to Geoff before they do so we can work together or do I stay with Chris and his group while they catch Geoff. I enjoyed the course and always enjoy racing at Sutton Park. It always suits me.”
Geoff Giddings: “I was pleased with that ride. Coming across the line, I was gutted with second but again pleased, and pleased for Steve – for a teammate to win it is really good. Over the final laps I saw how fast he goes round Sutton Park. He really showed me how to ride round here and was very quick, especially in the wooded section across the roots and so on. A few times I had a few wobbles there but got through it. I thought if I go to the road and was behind him, I could probably sprint me up here but he just got a small gap over the hurdles through the woods there.
Chris Young: “I can’t expect to win every time. There was some good opposition there today and if anyone was just a little bit off form, you could drop a few places being as it was so close. It is good its so competitive. The course is very twisty with lots of corners and probably not ideal for me but I enjoyed it. It was really quick. I got a good start, did everything right, was in second place on the first lap but I just didn’t have the horse power in the end. When Stephen came past me, he was going like train so that was that. I was lucky to be honest to hold onto third and as the guys were just behind me.”
