RACE REPORT

The fourth round of the 2007-8 National Trophy Cyclo-Cross series brought riders to Peel Park on the Eastern fringes of Bradford. This course will host the 2008-9 National Championships in 13 months time and on the evidence of the racing on display this time round, it will produce some excellent racing.

On a dark, dank morning the Youths sprint away from the start

The lead group in the Youths' race

First off on a grey and damp morning were the Youth riders and they really set the tone for the day with a fantastic race, full of action from start to finish. It was dominated by three riders, Daniel Mclay, Luke Gray and Tom Moses. All three held the lead at one time or another, and all three seemed to have the race in their grasp at one time or another, only for the other two to claw themselves back into it.

It wasn't until Moses, winner of two previous rounds this season, drifted off the pace in the closing stages that things began to really sort themselves out. A supreme effort by McLay, across the slogging off camber leading up the finish straight finally got him clear of Gray and won him the race. Ruby Millar coped well with the heavy conditions to be the first girl over the line.

The Vets' race was another classic. Rain began to fall before the start and the already soft grassland of Peel Park began to cut up. However, though it was a slog in places, there were also tarmac climbs and some super-slick descents to keep everyone interested. After a hectic first half lap, when the lead changed hands regularly, series leader, Geoff Giddings dug in and, accompanied by Noel Clough, began to draw clear of the rest of the field. John Shaw held on to them for a time, but as he fell back it became clear that the main threat came from local hero, Chris Young, who was flying after his usual steady start.

However, with the conditions turning it into a test of endurance as well as speed and skill, Young lost momentum and stalled about a minute back. Giddings kept up the pressure at the front and eventually Clough could no longer stay with him and had to give best. Giddings was clearly delighted with the win and all the more pleased that he'd beaten Yorkshire's best - including personal bogeyman, Young - on their home soil. Giddings now looks to have the series in the bag, but the Vets' National Championship will be one of the most eagerly awaited in years.

Roy Hunt had a lot less dramas to deal with in his romp to his fourth straight win in the over-50 category. Barry Kipling was a distant second.

The Junior race seemed all over bar the shouting after half a lap as Alex Paton soared into a huge lead, completely demoralising the rest of the field as he coped with the heavy conditions with ease. Series leader Scott Thwaites, in contrast, had a terrible first lap, collecting as much mud from crashes as from his churning wheels.

However, although Thwaites never really recovered his poise, Paton found things harder as the race progressed. The diminutive Seb Batchelor plugged away behind him and, looking especially comfortable on the running sections, and indeed running many sections other riders were slogging through, he kept Paton in his sights.

Right up to the very last lap, Paton could not relax, but he did keep his cool and perhaps controlled things a bit more than was apparent, coming in to win by just 12 seconds. Batchelor took a superb second, whilst Andrew Williams, who also rode a very well-controlled race in the circumstances was third, ahead of Scott Thwaites.

Left: Alex Paton celebrates a great win. Right, Annie Last and Louise Robinson (orange top) enjoyed a great battle

The Women's race was the one which saw the most dramatic turnaround of the day. After letting some of the younger riders have their moment of glory in the opening lap, Veteran Louise Robinson looked to be on her way to a gutsy win as she pulled clear of Annie Last in the closing stages. However, Last found some unexpected reserves of strength in the last half lap and managed to drop Robinson up the final climb to claim the win in highly dramatic fashion. Robinson was second, with Isal Rowntree third. Despite the absence of the resting Amy Hunt, it was perhaps the best and most exciting race of the series to date and, for young Last, a really significant result.

Women's race, lap 1 and Annie Last leads Annie Simpson

After all that had gone before, surely the senior race would be an anti-climax, but the very opposite was the case. Rob Jebb got clear once the early race jockeying for position had settled down and he dominated proceedings for the first half of the race. However, he was gradually brought back by the flying Polish visitor Mariusz Gil and Ian Field. Jebb had plenty of opportunity to use his running skills on the by now very muddy course, but as some late afternoon sunshine began to light the scene it became clear that he wouldn't be able to hold off Gil and Field.

Lap 2 and Rob Jebb leads Gil (almost obscured) and Field (in red), whilst series leader Dave Collins, in yellow, struggles in the background.

20071209_peel_park_national_trophy_senior_field_leads_550

A few laps later and Field leads Jebb and Gil as the sun shines late in the day

For a time Gil, Field and Jebb rode as a threesome, with Ian Bibby, returning to racing for the first time since the World MTB Championships, chasing hard behind. Although Bibby looked like he might make the bridge for a time, he eventually ran out of momentum, rather as Chris Young had done earlier in the day.

Paul Oldham and Ian Bibby

However, in contrast to the sprightly riding of Bibby, series leaders Dave Collins and Paul Oldham had a collective bad day at the office and could do nothing to affect the outcome of the race. The pair finished eighth and ninth respectively and will now go on to the last round in Derby, where they will probably settle the series title between them.

Back at the front, it was Ian Field who was looking the strongest and as he pulled clear of Gil, so Gil gradually dropped Jebb and that was the order in which they finished, Field taking a splendid win, which obviously gave him great pleasure.

POST-RACE RIDER REACTION

Daniel McLay: 1st Youth
It was very hard out there today, very competitive, lots of riders going for it, and that just made it hard in the conditions. It's been tough each round, everyone is closely matched so it makes good racing. I had to chase Luke (Gray) to begin with: sometimes people put in the moves, break it down and sometimes it pays off and sometimes it doesn't. Today I thought Luke had got it, I was just putting in big efforts where I could and I just got back up to him and buried myself and took a flyer, so that went well.

Luke Gray: 2nd Youth
Yeah, pleased with the result today, I tried really hard but I just couldn't get away. I know I'm quite good in the muddy and tech sections so I tried to make up as much ground as I could there, but they just pulled me back on the straighter bits.

Thomas Moses: 3rd Youth
I wanted a win today, but there you go. There were attacks going off all the time - it was a good race but not the result I wanted. Unfortunately I was the weakest of the 3 today, so not a good result for me. The last round should be another good race with everything to play for between the 3 of us, I'm not sure how I'll fare as Derby has a lot of running, but it should be good.

Ruby Miller: 1st youth lady
It was really good out there today, with more girls than usual, and they kept me on my toes and I had to keep pushing all the way. Hannah (Shenton) was out there from the start, I didn't have a brilliant start so I just went for it and it paid off in the end. I seem to do well in really wet muddy courses; they suit me more than when it's dry.

Hannah Shenton: 2nd Youth Lady
It was muddy out there, but it were good, I like the mud. Just as well really as the whole course is plastered in the stuff! I got a good start today, then I had a crash on one of the corners and Ruby got away and she did really well to keep away. I tried really hard, it was a good race, to be honest Ruby was supposed to win this one, she's been doing well all season, she deserved the win.

Lucy Garner: U14
That was okay, but I was expecting a better result, I would have liked to have finished higher in the under 16 girls race really. I really didn't like the course I wasn't feeling too good out there but I did okay.

Penny Rowson: 3rd Youth lady
That was good; I've been coming 4th and 5th for the last couple of races so to finally get in the top 3 is excellent. This isn't my type of course, too much mud, it was tough but I enjoyed it really. It's good to have so many girls having a go, it makes it much harder but it's good to have the competition.

Geoff Giddings: 1st Vet
I wanted to go out there and really sock it to him today. I think the trouble I've had before I've been holding back a little bit waiting for Chris (Young) to come up. At last week's Midlands Champs, I thought I'll give it a trial run and go from the gun and I thought I'd do that again today and see if anyone could stick with me. It worked! The conditions out there were really hard; you needed a lot of power. I'm so pleased to win that one especially from the gun. To get a gap like that on Chris today, well I'm pretty chuffed. I was ding donging with Noel for bit, but it came down to whoever could go fast on the hard bits. It's the Nationals next but we've got to get Xmas over with first.

Chris Young: 3rd vet
I didn't get the result I was after, not like last year. Unfortunately you get these days, I knew from start really - I just had to do my best to keep going, keep pulling along and get round in one piece. It was a good course, good for bike handling and stuff and I enjoyed it but the result just wasn't there. I can't be too disappointed; you just got to get on with it and better luck next time. The Nationals next, I suppose that's the one really, I still haven't upped me training yet for that one. Looking forward to a few beers over Xmas - I go well on beer, not had much this week'

Noel Clough ' 2nd Vet
That was an unbelievably tough race out there today. The weather was a big factor, there were some really dodgy areas, some really fast descents were you could lose it. I lost it a few times; Geoff lost it a few times. He just got away from me on the last lap; I had no response to him. He was very strong today, especially up the road sections; I was thinking blimey I've got my work cut out here, but yeah good ride. We had a battle all the way through, I got ahead a bit he got ahead a bit and in the end he got it, it's one of those things. Yeah it's the Nationals next, it's going to be a good race, there's a lot of good names in there so I'm looking forward to get stuck in.

Roy Hunt ' 1st Vet50
Four out of 4 so far, nice course today, probably one of the best courses we've had, really tricky and hard to stay upright, it was good, real cross course. We get spoilt a little bit and we like the mud, especially the mountain bikers. Tyre choice was critical today, to be truthful; it was so tricky out there, sliding around. Good though.

Barry Kipling: 2nd Vet50
Yeah yet another runner's up spot behind Roy, he was going really strong today. I thought the course might have suited me more than Roy, it was a real power course, real slippy which is the type of course I really enjoy as you never know which way your bike is going to take you next, just moving about, moving your bike, it's really really good, but Roy did well again.

Alex Paton ' 1st Junior
I finally got my first big win of the season so I'm really chuffed with that. I raced yesterday at the Nott's & Derby, that was a hard race, muddy cold but I did well, so a good weekend all round really. Today I led from the start onto the off road and then I just battled ahead I was focused on what I had to do got on with it. Well the plan is to peak for the Nationals, so everything looks to be on track, it all looks to be coming together, I'm really happy with that. Got some valuable points with that too, Scott has the series sewn up but there's still 2nd spot to play for.

Annie Last: 1st Junior/Senior lady
Yeah that wasn't bad, I've been ill for the last week, so I just thought I'd ride today and see what happens, so it was a good race for me. I wasn't sure how I was going to feel today so I just hung onto Louise's wheel, with one lap to go I had a bit more to give than I thought I'd have, so I thought I'd see what I can do. I started to pick it up; I got past her on the second part of the course and just went from there. I think she had a couple of slips on the last lap, which helped me and I came home to take the win.

Louise Robinson ' 1st vet/2nd senior lady

I don't know what that was like from a spectator point of view, I expect that was quite an exciting race I imagine. I got a bit of a gap out there because I took a different line to what I was doing, my bike had been clogging with the leaves, so I didn't ride through them the next time and I got a gap. I wasn't sure if I could utilize it as I just didn't have the legs today, I'm a bit of a one speed diesel at the moment. The most I ever do in training is 40mins and I do that about 3 times a week, I haven't got the time for anything else. I was using my experience today to get me round. I was absolutely dying on the last lap I couldn't even get out the saddle, I just haven't got the legs at all for this, there was nothing I could do when Annie came past, I tried.

Isla Rowntree ' 3rd lady
Exciting race today on a very challenging course, it's not quite the outcome we wanted, Annie did a cracking ride so all credit to her. The race was very down to what lines you took, one messed up corner and suddenly the gaps there. Great race really enjoyed it.

Seb Batchelor -2nd Junior
Really please with that today it was a good race. I got off to a good start I couldn't quite close on Alex, he was quite strong out there. I liked the running section on this course; I like a bit of running, so a good race really. Scott crashed near the start of the first lap, I think he got a bit demoralised and couldn't quite get back on. I was just out there riding my own race getting stuck in, having fun.

Andrew Williams - 3rd Junior
That was tough today, especially as I only had one bike. I struggled towards the end, the bike was just getting heavier and heavier, but I managed to hang on for 3rd. It was a good course; the technical sections def helped me with my position today. At one point I managed to gain on 2nd placed rider, but then as my bike was getting heavier he managed to ride away from me. Hopefully I'll have two bikes for the next one.

20071209_peel_park_national_trophy_JD_field_250pIan Field: 1st Senior/Under 23  (pictured)
Yeah that was a surprising win for me today, surprising because, since I've come off the GB Team I've been working as a builder and I've just been getting it wrong, the ratio of work to training to rest. It came to a head last weekend where I had to climb off, I had a shocking ride, I was just knackered: I'd worked all day Friday and I'd just got it all wrong. But I've had no work this week, I rested up, I only rode my bike for a couple of hours and just hoped that being fresh would do the job today and it did. Rob was strong out there. I had problems with my bike at the start, the wheel was moving sideways, that's where I lost a lot of time. I had to work hard to get back to Rob but once I got there I knew I had it over him because basically I was riding that hill up from the kids playground and he couldn't. I want a senior National title now so I'll be doing a lot of building work?.on the bike!

Paul Oldham
I lied, I said I'd win this one, but I just didn't have it today. No idea why it's just one of those days. My arms were dead, legs were dead, nothing. Too much running. Definitely not my day, I didn't lose too much today as Dave (Collins) had a rough day as well, so it's still pretty close between us for the series. I'm going put my feet up now until Derby I reckon.

Ian Bibby: 2nd under 23
I just felt like I was chasing all day today. I wasn't gridded too good so had to chase. I thought I might get third at one point as I was catching him but he pulled away again from me. It's not too bad considering I haven't raced for 3 months, so a good start.

20071209_peel_park_national_trophy_JD_fletcher_250pDavid Fletcher: 3rd under 23 (pictured)
This has been a massive shock to the system moving up to the under 23's but it's much better racing than the juniors. It's much harder, lots more competition, but I'm doing okay, it's all good. I did well coming 3rd today as both Ian and Bibby are coming up to their final under 23 year, so as new boy I'm doing fine. From the off it was really hard, especially through the tricky sections in the mud and the running really started to hurt but other than that it was good.

Rob Jebb: 3rd Senior
I gave it a good go, I wanted to ride well in Bradford, it's a good course and I enjoyed it. I knew it was going to be difficult, I thought it might be Paul Oldham thought that would make the moves as he's going pretty well at the moment, but Fieldy was on a flyer and I knew Marius would be up there. So yeah I was pleased with the result, I did my best.

Dave Collins - Senior Series leader
That was a bit of a disaster today. I was going quite well on some bits of the course and other bits I was really struggling. I haven't done too much since Mallory, due to illness, didn't do the inter areas last week as I was still getting over it so just trying to get back on the programme a bit really. That was really hard. I was up there you know 3rd/4th for a good while and then had a big crash on the last lap took lumps out of me knees and got cramp in both legs as well. As long as I finished in front of Paul (Oldham) that's all that really mattered. If Paul had won today I would have been a bit stuffed today really but luckily he seemed to have as much as a nightmare today as I did, so win some you lose some. Luckily all the people who finished in front don't really matter as far as the overall series stands. Derby will be a big battle. I was hoping to take a few points off Paul today especially early on when I was about 3rd/4th and he was struggling down in 6th/7th. Now have to get the nationals out the way, I'll have a good go at that the course suits me and then it's a last battle in Derby.

Marius Gil: 2nd Senior
The race was good, but I didn't feel to good myself, I've not had much sleep this week as I've just become a Dad for the first time and the travel from Poland to the UK is quite a distance, I've done well over 1700km to get here and the ferry crossing wasn't the best, so I've not had the best preparations for this race.
I'm happy with the result, it's not too bad considering. It was hard out there and very slippery especially on the corners and one of my wheels didn't have the grip I need so that made it harder for me, but I tried my best and got 2nd so it can't be bad.
