National Trophy Round 2: Ipswich

Sunday 28th October 2007; Chantry Park, London Road, Ipswich

Report and images by Larry Hickmott

The second round of the 2007-08 British Cycling National Cyclo-Cross Trophy series was held at Ipswich on Sunday on a soggy course at Chantry Park. The weather for the racing was light rain and strong wind with the days winners included Paul Oldham (Elite mens), Amy Hunt (Elite Women) and Scott Thwaites in the Junior event. British Cycling will have more from the event in the coming days.

Start of the Elite mens race.

As winner Paul Oldham said afterwards, “you wait years for one and then like a bus, two come along”. He is referring to the fact that for a long time his best place was a third in a National Trophy and now he’s won two on the trot and on the showing at Ipswich and Abergavenny, two very different courses, you wouldn’t bet against the Hope factory rider winning at Mallory in Round 3.

The skies had stopped leaking by the time the Elite Men’s race, with a few visitors from Belgium in the line up, started although the air still had a damp feel about it and the course was now quite boggy in places. Series leader, Paul Oldham, lead them away from the start with Jody Crawforth back in the series for the first time this year just behind with Dave Collins in third and Ian Field back in seventh or eight on the opening lap.

Dave Collins has a dig up the boggy and uphill finish straight to split the leading group early on.

A select group quickly formed with the likes of Dave Collins, Jody Crawforth, Stuart Wearmouth, Ian Field, and Paul Oldham and it was Collins piling on the pressure as they came through the finish area early on in the race. It wasn’t Collins though who got the gap but Oldham who just like in Abergavenny, only earlier this time, made a dash for freedom.

Despite a fall on lap one, the series leader threw caution to the strong wind that was blowing across the course and got into a groove around the twisty, up and down circuit. With Collins and Field chasing hard, these two soon drew clear of the rest and sensing that Field was a danger, Collins took advantage of the Hargroves Cycles rider taking a bike change by pressing hard on the pedals.

By this time, we were into the finale of the race and Oldham had the race won barring accidents being nearly a minute up on the rest. Collins opened up a small gap on Field and although he wasn’t able to really build on it a lot, the gap was one he was able to hold all the way to the line where he took second place with Field close behind in third and Jody ‘never say die’ Crawforth not far away in fourth.

Left: Under 23 Series leader Stephen Adams had a day to forget with crashes making it a real fight to hold on to the jersey which he did whilst Paul Oldham (right) survived a single crash to win easily.

Afterwards, Oldham (above, right) admitted that despite the conditions, he only needed one bike change. “I love it when its muddy so the wet weather was alright by me. It’s good fun and I really enjoyed it. I crashed on the first lap and got back on and then everyone was sat looking at each other so I thought I might as well go it alone again. I got a gap and as it’s quite windy today, that helped me.”

On tyre choice which can be crucial when the weather is wet but the course is not soaked in the same way Southampton was last year, Paul explained “I couldn’t decided weather to ride on muds or standard tyres and I chose standards. After my crash on the first lap, I thought I had made the wrong choice but it was alright in the end. Being out on my own, I could pick my own lines and stay on the grass instead of the mud. That does make life a bit easier.”

Left: Collins gaps Field late in the race and keeps it to the finish line. Right: Despite racing the day before and not a lot of training, Field was competitive with the best riders at Ipswich.

Ian Field (above right): “I had two weeks off after a long hard summer season and I have only been back on the bike two weeks. I got my bikes on Friday and built them up and finished doing that at 9 at night and did Notts & Derby yesterday. I made sure nothing was going to fall off them and it was harder there than I wanted it to be because the Belgiums turned up so I had to press on a bit to get the win. I felt good today and moved up easily from the fifth row or where ever I was. Once I got to the front, I was little fatigued when Paul went so I sat in and bided my time.”

“It was when I was changing bikes that Dave got away. I am now doing a full on ‘cross season with Hargroves and looking at doing the Worlds. I have already qualified based on last year’s result so am concentrating on that now.”

Dave Collins: “It was a completely different race to the last round. We knew it was going to be a course that rewards the rider who presses on a bit so we thought we’d get a move on early doors and see what happened. It came down to the three of us and Ian was riding quite strong. I thought he was going to have me for a bit but he changed bikes just as I was thinking of having a dig so I thought when he went into the pits I’ll try and take advantage down the other side.”

“I just managed to stay away but it was hard work. This course is a good for racing and one that can reward you. When its muddy a bit like today, you tend to find you can open up gaps quickly. There are usually a few crashes and we were riding flat out so they’d have to ride quicker to catch us. As long as you don’t mistakes, you’re away.”

“Saying that, round the last lap, I made a few silly mistakes and had words with myself as I just wanted to stay upright and get the points. I don’t know if I was gaining on Paul but I was riding as hard as I could to make sure Ian didn’t catch me. Paul was going too quick for us today and I wasn’t going to catch him unless he fell off.”

Start of the Junior race.

The Junior and Womens event saw the winners from Abergavenny triumph again with Scott Thwaites and Amy Hunt both crossing the line first. Both races however were quite different to round 1 with some ‘new’ names there to liven the events up. The two races were first up after the lunch time break when the Under12’s were racing.

The rain was easing by now although the wet circuit was now much harder and slower than the one at Abergavenny a few weeks before. First to line up were the Juniors and leading them away was Ben Roach whilst in the Womens race it was the junior woman Rebecca Thompson who lead that event from the start ahead of Hunt.

Thompson continued to lead the Women’s race as they came through the finish area ahead of Hunt and Annie Last with cyclo-cross legend Isla Rowntree back in fifth place. By the  time they got to the hurdles a little further on, Rowntree was up to third and whilst Thompson still lead, Hunt was looking comfortable.

A battle royal early on in the Womens race with Junior Rebecca Thompson pushing the senior riders all the way.

Meanwhile in the Junior race, despite the race only being a few laps old, it was turning into a two rider race as Scott Thwaites and Alex Paton were going elbow to elbow up the finish straight already well clear of the third placed rider Ben Roach.  As the races reached the halfway point, Thompson and Hunt were still in control of the women’s race but ominously Isla Rowntree was inching her way up to them.

As they came pout of the woods and into the first set of hurdles for the new lap, Rowntree used her technical skills to pass Thompson and as  she applied pressure to Hunt, Thompson started to lose ground as a gap opened up between her and the leaders. Thwaites and Paton continued to lead the Junior race but third place was turning into a battle between David Nichols and Thomas Humphreys who had caught and passed Roach who wasn’t far away in 5th.

Into the finale for the races and at the front of the Junior race, the pressure from Twaites eventually paid off as he finally broke Paton with Nichols not that far away on his own in third now. The Junior series leader continue to ride alone crossing the line tired but pleased with the win.

In the battle for the Women’s event, it was much closer as Rowntree pushed the rider who was not long ago (2006) representing England in the Commonwealth Games – Hunt. In a hard fought sprint, Hunt resplendent in the Yellow  series leaders jersey now covered in mud managed to pull slightly clear of Isla who gave her all and that was easy to see as she crossed the line and came to a stop.

Scott Thwaites wins the junior race alone.

Amy Hunt sprint around one of the juniors to beat Isla Rowntree in the race for the top step of the podium.

With a few months to go before the Nationals back in the famous Sutton Park (West Midlands), Rowntree is already looking in fine shape already and Hunt getting stronger too. With both series leaders winning their races, the top of the tables overall remained unchanged.

Start of the over 40's race.

Roy Hunt leading the over 50's from the word go...

In what was one of the closest and most exciting finishes on the day, the Veterans Over 40 event saw a change in the lead for the series when Geoff Giddings beat cyclo-cross legend Chris Young in a sprint for the line with Giddings taking the jersey off third placed rider Noel Clough – winner of round 1 in Abergavenny.

The weather was still not being very good to the riders and spectators when the Veterans in the Over 40 and Over 50 races lined up.  Last round winner, Noel Clough started the race in the leaders jersey but it was Phil Roach who got away to a flying start followed by Chris Young, Mick Bell and Martin Eadon.

After a shot wait, it was the start for the Over 50’s with Roy Hunt in the leaders green jersey leading the way through the finish area followed closely by Cliff Featherstone and Barry Kipling with splits already starting to grow behind him.

Cliff Featherstone (2nd) driving it up the finish line slope during the race while David Smith (3rd) digs in to stay with him.

At the front of the race for the 40's, it was Geoff Giddings who was on the attack, seen gapping the field early on with Phil Roach not far away but as was the nature of this race, the shape of it continually changed as different riders in the lead group had a go. So after the dig by Giddings, it was series leader Noel Clough giving it some on the front a few hundred metres later through the finish area with what was left of the challengers for the lead all strung out behind including Mick Bell, Geoff Giddings, Martin Eadon, Phil Roach, Chris Young and two or three others.

First round winner Noel Clough goes on the attack in the over 40's race up the finishing straight.

The weather was not getting any better, making the course tougher as what was once hard ground became rather soggy. It was the pace over this difficult ground though that saw the lead group slimmed down as the half way point approached with Roach, Giddings, Young, Eadon and Clough dropping the would be challengers.

Young was looking in good form and came through the start finish area in the latter stages of the race giving it some real stick and whilst Clough and Giddings clung to his wheel, Roach and Eadon were losing a few lengths up the finish hill before the race entered the woods section. After the woods, over the hurdles in pouring rain, Eadon and Roach were still only a few lengths adrift but the gap ahead of them soon opened up as the leaders continued to attack each other and the pace at the front remain frantic.

Meanwhile, in the over 50's, whilst Hunt was riding strongly as always alone out front, David Smith had caught North East rider Cliff Featherstone and the two were marking each other closely. Whilst they continued to battle it out for second place, a very fast final lap saw Giddings and Young come into view just clear of Clough and the two sprinted it out for the win with Giddings getting it and very pleased he was too whilst Young was second and Clough third. The battled for the Over 50’s podium behind hunt was won by Featherstone who got across the line ahead of Smith to claim the second place.

In the overall, Hunt remained leader after two wins in the Over 50 class whilst Giddings took the yellow jersey off Clough in the Over 40's who remains ahead of third placed Mick Bell in the overall table.

All smiles on the over 40 podium with Chris Young second, Geoff Giddings second and first round winner Noel Clough third in probably the most exciting race of the day.

YOUTH RACE -- Photo album -- Click Gallery 1 at the top of the page

20071028_Ipswich_Trophy_19

Start of the Youth race and Joshua Papworth (3rd from right -- Halesowen CC) again gets a flyer.

First event of the day was the race for the Under 16 riders with categories for Under 14 Boys and Girls as well all competing together. After a dry but cloudy start, as the riders started to line up, the rain that was to blight the day started to fall. After the grid had been formed, the start was given and as in Abergavenny, Joshua Papworth was off the line like a rocket and had lengths on the rest within a few hundred metres.

A select group of riders though made their way up to him and Luke Gray was soon forcing the pace. A new name in the series though was soon making the rest eat mud off his back wheel as Thomas Moses soon opened up a gap on series leader Daniel McLay with Joshua Papworth still on the pace with McLay. Luke Gray meanwhile had lost contact but was only seconds away.

Left: Lucy Garner won the girls race whilst  right the local club, Ipswich, had a good group of young riders taking part.

Whilst Thomas continued to ride away from the chasers, Gray joined McClay whilst Papworth dropped back to eventually finish 6th. A stumble at the hurdles near the start/finish failed to faze the leader as he stayed on his feet whilst behind the faces on the young riders told  the story of how tough the Ipswich circuit was.

The pace of Gray was proving tough as well as he managed to open a gap on the yellow jersyed Mclay and that was the way it was to stay with Moses winning by 23 seconds from Gray whilst McLay, round 1 winner, finished a minute back but managed to hang on to his leader’s jersey which he’ll wear in his home event in Leicestershire for round 3.

In the under 14 race, Samuel Lowe was the clear leader on this testing course, finishing in the top 10 ahead of John Lomas and round 1 winner Jonathan Dibben. Lowe’s win saw him take the series leader’s green jersey off the shoulders of Dibben with local lad Hugo Robinson in 3rd.  In the girls race, series leader Hannah Barnes was finding the conditions tough and it was  Lucy Garner who took full advantage to win that race ahead of Ruby Miller and Hannah Shenton with Garner taking the leaders jersey which no doubt she’ll wear proudly when the series visits Leicestershire for round 3.
