National Trophy Round 1: Abergavenny
7th October 2007

Report
The opening round of the 2007-08 British Cycling National Cyclo-Cross Trophy kicked off at Abergavenny on Sunday with some cracking racing around the dry and very fast course at the town’s Leisure Centre. The day started with the Youth racing at 10.30am with a race over 30 minutes for Under 16/under 14 boys and girls.
As ever, the riders started the race sprinting off the line and in the early part of the first lap, Joshua Papworth had the field strung out and splitting at the back as the pace took its toll on the younger riders. By the end of the lap, three riders were away, Papworth, Luke Gray and Daniel McLay. It was soon down to two though as Papworth lost contact with Gray and McLay and these two riders dominated the rest of the race.

They proceeded to attack each other and at times the race could have gone to either one of them but in the sprint for the line, McLay was too strong and won easily from Gray. There was a sprint for third too as just as Paul Young thought he had it, teammate Oliver Webster snuck down the inside and took third place for the Marie Curie team.
In the Under 14’s Jonathan Dibben won that classification from Samuel Lowe and Hugo Robinson who goes to the next round in his club’s town of Ipswich in third place overall. In the Girls category, a rider who has shown well on the track this year, showed she can cross a bit too as Hannah Barnes of Palmer Park Velo beat Lucy Garner (also handy on the track!) and another all round rider in Hannah Shenton.

Veterans
The next races off were the Veterans. They were split into two groups, over 40’s who were off first and over 50’s. With both groups under way and racing, in the Over 40’s Phil Roach took up the running on lap 1 with Martin Eadon not far away in second place as they came out of the woods followed by Mick Bell and a comfortable looking Nigel Clough.
The Over 40's ready themselves for the start.
Disaster then struck Eadon who fell on a grassy bend and lost time to the leaders as Roach continued to drive the pace along and in the over 50’s it was Roy Hunt unsurprisingly leading the way with no challenger yet appearing to threaten his dominance in this category.
At the front of the race, Clough took over the pace making and there were three leaders followed a handful of seconds back by Geoff Giddings who was to chase this group for most of the race, joined later on by teammate Andrew Shaw.
The break of three though was down to two with a lap to go as Clough took flight chased eagerly by Roach and Bell with Giddings and Shaw getting ever closer to those two. Clough held on to win and then in the sprint for the line, Giddings who with Shaw had joined the leaders in the final throws of the race, took the sprint from Bell.
In the over 50’s, Hunt romped home to win that while Peter Smith came back at Barry Kipling to get second in that, pushing Barry back into third place.

Junior & Women
Liz Slater (1st Vet), Annie Last, Amy Hunt and Rebecca Thompson
There was a break for lunch after these races as the Under 12’s battled it out and as yet, we do not have results for these events.
Then, once that racing was finished, the Juniors took to the line and then a few minutes after they had started, the Women’s race was under way. It didn’t take long for Ben Roach and Scott Thwaites to get to work and they were soon opening a gap on the rest as they scorched around the course well clear of any challengers.
In the Women’s race, it was junior rider Annie Last who was taking up the running there, leading the race by a few lengths from Amy Hunt and Rebecca Thompson, also a junior, staying in touch with them a few seconds back. Hunt soon joined Last and the two of them swapped the lead as they powered around the course whilst Thompson was joined by the two Team Chance riders (Marie Stuart & Jessica Roberts) racing for third.
At the front of the Junior race, Thwaites and Roach continued their battle around the course, each taking their turn at the front and with each pedal stroke, opening up the gap between them and their challengers. The two leaders soon became one though as Thwaites came out of the woods alone with Roach chasing alone and a group of four including the national champion Alex Paton vying for third place.
Bell lap, and Thwaites came through alone and as he did so, just behind was Amy Hunt, now also alone in her battle for the Women’s race. A few seconds later, second placed junior Ben Roach powered his way past second placed woman Annie Last who was starting to fade a little. Alex Paton led the group of chasers in the Junior race across the line with Rebecca Thompson trying to break clear of the Team Chance girls and now only had one for company.
It was then a long wait at the finish line with only the commentary of Hugh Porter ably assisted by wife Anita to keep us all informed of where the leaders were. Then, as Hugh informed the waiting crowd that Twaites was approaching, cameras were poised to capture the moment he crossed the line arms aloft to win the opening round.
Hunt followed suit to win the women’s race. Roach held on for second in the Junior race as did Last in the women’s race and then it was a sprint finish in the Junior race for third as Sebastian Batchelor just beat champion Alex Paton for third place. In the Women’s race, Thompson managed to shake off her challengers and crossed the line a second or two clear of them to take third in the Women’s race.

Elite Men’s Race
The final race of a dry day in Abergavenny lined up at quarter past two and what cracking race it was from the word go. It didn’t take long for the pace at the front to see two riders going clear as Paul Oldham piled on the pace at the front with only Jody Crawforth for company tucked tight on his wheel.
The chasers though were only seconds behind and leading the chase was Stephen Adams with a small gap to Dave Collins and Stuart Bowers. The race at the front soon started to get busy as a group of four formed lead still by Oldham and another group only seconds behind including a rider on the comeback trail, Matt Ellis and a new signing for Plowman Craven/Evans Cycles, Simon Richardson.
The leading group of four however never stayed together for long and Oldham’s speed around the dusty course soon saw him clear on his own again as the race started to fragment more and more in the chasing group. Stuart Bowers, Rob Jebb, Jody Crawforth and Stephen Adams were soon drawing clear of the rest of any would be challengers and only Dave Collins who had a mechanical was still in the chase for the podium.
Chase group in the Elite mens race lead by Rob Jebb from Dave Collins who dropped Stephen Adams later the same lap.
With Oldham drawing clear 30 seconds plus ahead of the rest, the four chasers became five as Collins joined them and when Collins hit the front with Jebb, the five became three as Crawforth and Bowers lost contact and then Adams lost contact too and it was down to two chasers. Oldham continued on his merry way to win the race alone and Collins made no mistake in the sprint for second with Jebb third. Stephen Adams was 6th but was the first under 23 race.
Lancashire rider Paul Oldham’s reaction to his first Trophy win was “I’m pleased with that, its been a long time coming. It’s been fourth place usually so I am well chuffed. It’s my first cross but I have been mountain biking at Worlds three weeks ago so the form is there. It’s been a busy September what with my wife having a baby so I’m waiting for it to all come crashing around me when the sleepless night nights catch up with me!”
“The course was good and a bit different to normal. I’m usually knee deep in mud here but it was nice.” Paul explained he had little time for preparation on the ‘cross bike, riding it to work and back the Thursday before the race for the first time.
“I knew I was strong today and it was one of those courses where I knew it could be one of those bunch races and no-one was willing to go to front so I thought I may as well go it alone instead of towing everyone else around. It makes them work too then”.
“The Trophy is definitely a goal. I was always going to take it seriously but now I have this (leaders jersey) I’m going to have pull my finger out and start training”
Paul Oldham celebrated a new birth in the family by winning the race alone.
Rob Jebb “I was a little bit off the pace on the first couple of laps, and then once I got up there, I had a little rest and Paul attacked and there was no way I could go with him as I had just got on. After a lap recovery, I dug in myself and tried to catch him but he was far too strong.”
“I’m looking forward to when we have some mud! If I can ride with the top boys on a course like that, I’m looking forward to later on in the year.” On his preparation, he admits he was really disappointed the Three Peaks was cancelled adding “I don’t doing anything different though to prepare – I ride my bike and go running.”
“I’m off to do a long race in America next week so that will make up for it. Before this, I have only done one cross race, and been doing some reps in running because I went to the World Mountain Range Champs so have been doing intervals for that and I think as long as you’re getting you’re heart rate up it’s the same whether you’re on the bike or running.”
Elite men podium, Rob Jebb, Paul Oldham and Dave Collins
Dave Collins: “I enjoyed the course today. I rolled my tub (tubular tyre) half way round the race and luckily it wasn’t too far from the pits so I didn’t have to run that far. I had to work pretty hard to get back on the group and when I caught them, they weren’t going that quick. So I was going to hit them straight away but decided to wait for the hill instead and gave it a good dig and there was only Rob who came with me. After that we made sure of the job and carried on very hard”.
“We have never ridden here in the dry before as it is always a mud bath but I quite enjoyed it. It is perhaps a little hilly for me but as long as the hills are straight, I can get the power down and with it being dryer, that always helps because I get the power out instead of sinking in the mud!”
“The course has lots of different challenges, hill’s cambers, sharp corners and a bit of everything. I knew Paul was going to be going well as he’s being going awesome this year. So I knew he was going to be one to watch. I thought Stuart Wearmouth was going to play a part and Matt Ellis perhaps. There are a lot of people challenging in this category and no-one is head and shoulders above everyone else.”
“I thought if I could get in a group and have a bit of a sort out I’d stand a chance. The Trophy is really open this year, I can’t see why there can’t be a different winner every round depending on the conditions and it was good to get some points today and get on the grid!”
