Stuart Wearmouth made it three out of three this season with another convincing win on the third round of the Yorkshire Points Cyclo-Cross series. The event was held in warm sunshine on the challenging Ripon Army CU course, close to the army barracks. Flat, but rough, the course wound through woodland, along river banks and looped up over and under a bridge, used by the army for training.

The Senior and Junior race had a good entry of well over 30 riders and it was Kinesis UK's Mark Thwaites who made the early running before fading. The race soon developed into a pattern which has become familiar this season, with Stuart Wearmouth gradually moving clear, chased by Noel Clough, James Sharp and Gary Wearmouth.

Gary Wearmouth enjoying the fast, sunny conditions

Whereas in the previous week's round, the big battle had been that between Wearmouth and Clough, who chased the Picarsco Pulman throughout the race, this time Wearmouth seemed to break the elastic fairly early, leaving Clough locked in combat with James Sharp for second place.

The pair circulated together throughout the latter laps and it became clear that it would come down to a sprint. The run in to the line is straight and fast and for the last couple of hundered yards it's tarmac and it was Clough who had the kick in the end, claiming second.

Gary Wearmouth took fourth, with Yorkshire legend Chris Young, gradually finding his form this season, finishing fifth.

Dave Stevens claims the Vets race win

The vets race attracted another huge entry of well over 50 riders and saw some of the best racing of the day. Dave Stevens, who won the previous week, had a battle on his hands as both Richard Binks and Steve Barron stuck to him like glue. The speed of the course and the absence of any significant ups or downs helped keep things together.

It was only in the final stages that first Barron and then finally Binks cracked, leaving Stevens to claim the win. Binks was second and Barron third.

The Youth Race saw several good battles

In the youth race, Paul Young and L. Balyakyi had a real ding-dong battle, with Young just holding on to win the sprint at the end. Hannah Shenton looked in great form as she came in 7th and best female rider. The Under-12 race went to Billy Harding.

Sadly this was probably the last race at this venue as the Army CU organiser Andy Hilton leaves the army this year. The event and his organisational polish will be missed.
