The Yorkshire Cyclo-Cross season's bright start continued with the Drighlington race at Oakwell Country Park, which attracted a big entry of 146 riders.

 

For the last two races, the familar and polular course through the Country Park was used. The lap opened with a long, draggy field leading up to a climb with several steps at the bottom. From the top of the clib, it was a 180 turn and a long, rapid run back the full length of the course, including a couple of sketchy drop-offs and then into a winding but not too technical singletrack section through woodland. Conditions were cool and overcast, but the course was bone-dry and very fast, making for some exciting and rapid racing.

First up was the Youth race which went to Tom Moses, who rapidly built up a useful lead and won by over a minute from Paul Young, Scott Woddhead and Oliver Webster, who crossed the line within 20s of each other to claim the other placings. Luke Simpson was first Under-14 and Hannah Shenton first girl.

The Under-12 race went to the consistent Billy Harding, from Chris Barnes and Seb Marsh. Hannah Saville was first girl.

Attention then turned to the Vets and Women's race, which had attracted a big field of well over 50 riders. Dave Stevens, the defending Yorkshire Points series champion was making his first appearence of the season and was soon moving away from the field and by the end of the race he'd built up a classy 2 minutes buffer etween himself and the rest of the field.

There was no such security for the next four riders who came in as a bunch, having enjoyed, if that's the word, a race-long battle for second place. Richard Binks got the verdict on the line from Paul Dixon, Steve Barron and Graham Clark, in what was effectively a photo finish.

The Senior/Junior race had once again attracted a number of riders from outside the region, keen to get their seasons underway and sharpen up for national competition. And for the second week running the race went to NE visitor Gary Wearmouth, who, although 45s clear in the end, had a race long battle to hold off the attentions of defending series champion Noel Clough. Clough never gave up and had his adversary in sight for much of the race.

Stuart's brother, Gary, picked up third place, with James Sharp taking fourth. Local favourite, Chris Young was locked in a protracted battle with Rob Thackray, which ebbed and flowed lap-by-lap. In the end Young prevailed catching and passing his rival right on the line after a desperate sprint up the long grass drag to the finish.

The series continues next week at the Army's Lava Banks training ground, near Ripon.
