Phil Dixon outsprints Nick Craig to win the race and the series in the most exciting race of the series.

With the National Champs now all done and dusted all eyes were focused on the remaining round of the season-long National Trophy, where titles and possibly old scores were to be settled. It was in the end a nail biting series of races where the outcome hung on the balance for many of the riders involved. An exciting end to a well contested series that didn't go entirely to plan for some.

A fine sunny day did little to alter the sodden course, which snaked (or should I say flowed!) its way round the grounds of Derby college, in an ingenious and challenging figure of 8 course, put together by Dan Alexander to test the riders to their limits. It even included a bridge enabling the course to weave under and over itself each lap. Mud, though, was the order of the day and as the races progressed it got deeper and more unforgiving, reducing a lot of the race to a running match.

20070114_NTrophy_009For Chris Young it seemed like just another day at the office as the newly crowned Veteran National Champion took control of his race early on, leaving Geoff Giddings (pictured right) once more in pursuit mode, as he gallantly chased the Yorkshire man around the course: Chris was always in his sights but Geoff was never able to make any inroads to the gap. Young took a comfortable win, with Giddings making it his fifth 2nd of the series, which in the end won him the overall title.

Young missed one round but won the other for and picked up second overall, with David Stevens 3rd in both the race and the overall results. A disastrous race for Martin Eadon, still getting over a severe bout of flu, saw him endure a crash on the tricky tarmac section snapping his forks, followed by another mechanical on his second bike, which meant he finished in 10th spot, thus losing any chance of a podium in the overall classifications.

It was good to see Roy Hunt back in the thick of it in the over 50's race after a devastating collision with a car before Christmas left him unconscious and he is still six weeks later suffering dizzy spells. As per usual he gave the race his all, but the usual Hunt sparkle wasn't there. Martin Booth on home ground took full advantage and rode a strong race to take the win with Hunt claiming 2nd whilst Clifford Featherstone took third.

With one race missed due to the accident, Hunt wasn't sure whether the overall title would be his and it wasn't until the current title leader Barry Kipling came home in 6th spot and the calculations were done that Hunt realised he'd managed to secure the overall win by the narrowest of margins. Just 2 points separated Hunt from a philosophical but disappointed Kipling, with Joseph Rowe taking the final spot overall.

The youth and under 14's race didn't go according to plan for either race leader in their respective groups. Jordan Hook took the initiative and set the pace from the gun with Dan McLay, Michael Butler and Luke Gray all in hot pursuit in the youth race. Butler looked at ease as he chased the leaders, with Dan Mclay taking control of the race. As Butler fought to regain McLay's lead, disaster struck as he left the pits on the last lap with his gears mashing up rendering the bike unridable and leaving Butler the mammoth task of running nearly an entire lap to get back to the pits and get another bike, all thoughts now on finishing with enough points to retain the overall leaders title.

Mclay went on to take a strong win, with Hook taking 2nd just ahead of Gray. Butler fighting all the way finally came home in 13th and uncertain of the overall outcome.
Starting the race with a 44 point advantage Butler's final placing gave him the overall win with his lead narrowed down to just 12 points, from Dan Mclay who took second whilst Luke Gray took a well earned 3rd.

Butler's team mate and under14's leader Max Sykes also had an uncharacteristic race, where suffering from a virus, he battled round to take his first defeat in the series, finishing in 4th. Josh Papworth was the eventual winner of the under 14's, with a strong ride, giving him 5th overall in the youth race too, with Sam Lowe picking up 2nd and Luke Grivell-Mellor taking 3rd.

Despite not taking the win on the day Sykes maintained his lead and took the coveted overall title with Lowe taking 2nd. A brilliant win by Papworth and a disastrous race for Hugo Humphreys, who suffered a mechanical, meant Papworth, took 3rd over all. Rebecca Thompson took her race with ease making it 5 wins out of 5 to take the youth girls title to add to her National Champions jersey, while Hannah Shenton added the under 14's title to her newly acquired National Champions jersey as well.

20070114_NTrophy_010

Start of the Junior race.

In the junior race Alex Paton had his work cut out as Scott Thwaites made his intentions clear very early on, the race was going to be his. With all 3 junior riders, Paton, David Fletcher and Thwaites all selected to ride the World Cyclo Cross champs in 2 weeks time, they all underlined their class by ripping the field apart and battling it out between them.

Thwaites got away early on and Fletcher and Paton worked hard to keep him in their sights. In the end Thwaites took the victory with Paton claiming 2nd and Fletcher 3rd.
Just 7 points was all the separated the top 3 juniors in the overall classifications, with Paton taking the series jersey to add to his junior National Cyclo-Cross champion's jersey won the week before. Thwaites and Fletcher both finished the day on 160 points, with Thwaites taking 2nd and Fletcher 3rd.

Womens Race
20070114_NTrophy_012

Gabby Day also had a less than perfect day in her race. Starting the race as she meant it to go on she soon opened up a sizable gap, as Isla Rowntree, Amy Thompson, Annie Last and Jessica Roberts battled behind to keep in contention, then disaster struck as Day was beset with mechanical problems, which saw her comfortable lead crumble and disappear as she struggled to get to the pits.

The rest of the race was spent moving forward like a woman possessed to reclaim lost positions. Meanwhile, Isla Rowntree, using a rare weekend off to come and race, had taken full advantage on the situation using her experience and talent she quickly moved forward and took up the race, with juniors Annie Last and Amy Thompson battling out behind her.

Rowntree managed to keep off the surging Day who despite the traumas, was only 33secs adrift at the end and came home to secure 2nd spot and with it the overall title. Juniors, Last, Thompson and Jessica Roberts, seemed to be replaying the race from the weekend before, where Thompson had emerged triumphant: this time, though, Last had the upper had and took 3rd, giving her enough points to claim 2nd overall ahead of team mate Jessica Roberts who took 3rd. Gabby's Mum Louise, took the veteran's title.

Elite Men

With Jody Crawforth going into the final round with the yellow leader's jersey on his shoulders, he looked like the man to beat. Phil Dixon, looking relaxed and happy in his new National Champion's jersey, lined up alongside the Evans' rider and on the whistle the gloves came off and the task in hand got under way in earnest.

Stuart Bowers was first to hit the muddy sections with Crawforth and the rest of the field strung out behind him. By the end of the first lap though, 5 clear leaders had emerged, with Crawforth, Rob Jebb, Nick Craig Phil Dixon and Dan Booth, vying for position, and Dave Collins just out of touch.

As the race progressed, the 5 became 3 as the conditions and pace took their toll, with Crawforth desperately trying to keep in contention as he sensed the overall title slipping through his fingers.

20070114_NTrophy_013

It was at one point a five man race at the front but the tough course saw that reduced to three and then two.

With just a few laps remaining the battle was down to two men, Dixon and seasoned campaigner Nick Craig. Despite a few digs Craig could not lose the determined Dixon and the final run to the line was a frantic sprint, where Dixon took the win. All eyes were now on where Crawforth would finish. Rob Jebb, repeating the line up on the National podium came in to take 3rd and Crawforth came in just 47secs adrift of Dixon in 4th spot. It wasn't enough. A disappointed Crawforth saw the overall title whipped from under his muddy feet by a mere 5 points, with a delighted Dixon happy to add it to his growing wardrobe of jerseys.

Dan Booth's 6th spot gave him enough points to take 3rd overall, whilst Dave Collins was delighted to at least finish a race at last without any mishaps to either him or his bike.
Mark Thwaites took the win in the under 23's with Ian Legg 2nd and Stephen Adams 3rd. Adam's 3rd giving him a clear win in the overall classifications despite a bad case of shingles which he raced through in Bradford without even knowing he had the virus.

It was definitely not a day for fairy tale endings as it seemed that nearly all the series leaders had to fight hard to retain their leads and with mechanicals and illness abounding it was anyone's guess what the outcomes were going to be as each race unfolded. It was however a fantastic end to a comprehensive test of all round ability and talent with each round offering its own challenges and tests. In the end the best men (and women) won their respective titles, just as it should be, giving us exciting nail biting, edge of the seats racing right up to the last race, which just shows what wealth of talent we have across all ages. Good luck to those selected to ride at the World Champs and to the rest well done, see you next year for more fast mud filled action.

Blue Skies! Commentator Hugh Porter and a section of the crowd watch the action close up on the bank which had many a rider struggling under cloudless skies.

Rider Comments:

Rebecca Thompson
I really wanted to win the last round, especially as I won all the other rounds. I found the course much tougher than the course at the Nationals, the mud was much harder going here and all that running across the field it was so hard. The mud was so deep it was so hard to run through and the bike was just getting clogged up if you tried to ride it. Looking forward to having a break and then I start the mountain bike season, I can't wait I just love mountain biking.

20070114_NTrophy_004

Hannah Shenton
It was a good ride but it was so hard. The mud was horrendous it was so thick. When I got here and saw the bridge I was dead worried about it, but if your bike was clean you got up it okay, so I was fine.

20070114_NTrophy_002

National champ -- Hannah Shenton!

20070114_NTrophy_003Michael Butler (right)
I got a reasonable start and was lying about 3rd when I started to get going. I was hoping to make my way up the field. I had just gone into 2nd and was closing down on Dan in first place, when I changed bikes and as soon as I came out of the pits my rear mech' went into the wheel.

So I had to run then for nearly the whole lap from one pit to the next to get another bike. It wasn't much fun, especially on the fast tarmac sections. When I got back on my bike I managed to get back a few places but it was very hard to keep going, but I knew I had to finish to try and get some points to get the jersey.

Josh Papworth
Really pleased with getting the win. It was a good race really muddy I liked the bridge and the hump after it, lots of running but some of the sections were rideable, much more than at Southampton the previous week.

Max Sykes
I've not been feeling too good all week, I've got some sort of virus I think, Dad being a doctor got me round though. The plan was just to get round, finish and enjoy it. I can't say I enjoyed all of it though, the running was really hard. This was my first defeat this season, but I'm not really worried, I got the result that I wanted.

Dan Mclay
It was a really hard race around a very hard course, it really suited me. The one big effort I put in helped me build my lead. It was unfortunate that Michael had the mechanical but I think I had the win there anyway. He (Michael Butler) definitely deserved to win the series.

20070114_NTrophy_006Chris Young
Yeah it was a good one today. I thought I just take the race from the front today, go for it and see what happens. I was running well last week and there was lots of running on this course so I just went for it.

Once you get away you can then pace yourself a bit, as well so that helped. I had the race under control, I felt a lot better this week than I did at the Nationals. I had a lot on my mind last week, but this time there wasn't so much pressure.

It's great having a series, but I think they should let you drop a race. People have commitments and it's hard sometimes to drop those commitments to make it to the whole series.

I had a good pit crew today; most of Yorkshire were helping me. I couldn't have done it on one bike, I had to change bikes each lap. I'm going to take a bit of a break now and get back to coaching and then come back and defend the title next season.

Geoff Giddings
Today was just about doing a good ride, just bringing it home really. I would have liked to have beaten Chris, I was pretty close to him last week, it would have been nice to wrap the series up with a win but he just ran away from me. I managed to pull him back on the tarmac sections but he just kept pulling away on the running sections. So it was all about being safe and not trying anything stupid today I think. I'm really pleased with my consistency! Winning overall is a great result and big improvement on last year where I finished 8th. I'm taking a break after my last race and then back to training for next season where I hope to improve again.

Roy Hunt
It was a good day as it looks like I won the series but to be honest it been hard work since the accident. I've just not had the sparkle I usually have, its just all been a slog I don't know how it's all come together. People are amazed that I've even been contemplating racing let alone actually doing it. Martin had a good ride he's a strong lad and deserved to win.

Martin Booth
Better late than never! Last week's course was suitable but it was a race of 2 parts really, I got to about 2 1/2 laps and the same as everyone else I was struggling for grip and that was my downfall. But this week there was no question of grip as there was no grip at all. It was a matter of running. So where the running comes into its own I'm bound to be at home. I normally do more running races in the winter than I do 'Cross. The last few years all I've done is ride 8 to a dozen cross races and fill the rest of the winter in with running races. I've done all the National Trophy series as Daniel's riding and if he's here I have to do something here as well.

Barry Kipling
I've had my worst race all season today. It was mainly the running that caused the problem, I'm not a runner and it really showed. I haven't practised but I'll have to now for next year. It's too late now. On the running sections I just kept cramping up my calves, every lap was just getting worse. Roy still thought he'd only come second until I came in and gave him the good news and bad news for myself. I'm not really happy with the result but it's my own fault and Roy deserves the overall win though really.

Isla Rowntree
Obviously winning by default like that is not like winning, winning, but I feel sorry for Gabby but that's racing isn't. Part of racing is being able to get your equipment round as well as yourself; it's an integral part of it. Pleased with the result though. I haven't done much 'cross this season I've just been really busy at work. I rode at Ipswich and got 3rd last week at the Nationals which I was really pleased with and now this.

I love riding and I like participating when I can, so it was good to get this result. A win's a win at the end of the day. It's such a long time since I last won a National Trophy, I've won loads in the past, so it's a nice feeling to bag another one. A great course, very well designed, just a shame the run was so far.

20070114_NTrophy_011Scott Thwaites
Yeah I'm really pleased to get the win today, I didn't really target this race, I've got a World Cup next weekend, and the World Champs the week after that so I've had a hard week's training.

I did a hard training session yesterday and I didn't expect to feel good today but my legs were feeling fine. I knew Alex would have a strong ride, I've said that all year.

I thought I'd have a go and made a push and when I got that gap that was it I was committed and went with it. I liked the course, it's a new one and more interesting than some of the others with the bridge and the running and a lot of road. It's more like the Belgium courses I've been riding over the winter.

Alex Paton
I only just managed to hang onto the overall jersey today. It was a lot of hard work. I was very focused before the race just thinking about how close it was going to be for the overall title. But I'm very happy with the result; I'm going well at the moment. Really hard race very tough competition.

Gabby Day
I felt really strong today and once I got a lead I felt really happy that I could maintain it, as I was quite strong in the running section. Then round the back my rear mech jammed in the wheel, I spent a few minutes deciding whether to run or just try and fix the problem there. I tried to fix it and got it sorted eventually but by this time I was down in 5th or 6th spot. I'm pleased I managed to get back up to 2nd, my form's looking good for the World Cup and the World Champs, so I'm pleased with that.

Nick Craig
It was a little bit of a closer battle this week between me and Dixon than last week. I needed to shake Phil off before the finish, as I don't have a sprint, it's not 'cos I'm old it's just I've never had a sprint. I did push on a few times and try to shake him off but he needed to beat me to take the series so he had the bit between his teeth. I can hang my wheels up now, just for the 'cross, I'm not done just yet, I'll be back next season.

Phil Dixon
I felt really good today I had a real battle with Nick. It went down to the wire. I didn't ride as well as last week but I still felt good. Last week was a very good ride. This is the sort of course where you can make lots of mistakes, so I took my time and watched a bit and saw where the mistakes were being made. It broke in stages today, I got away at one point and the group brought me back and then I got away again with Nick. There weren't much between me and Nick today; he had a good ride.

Rob Jebb
I found today a lot harder than last week the mud were a lot stickier, nowhere to recover really. A good course nice and technical. I'm a good runner up and down mountains, I'm no faster than anyone else on the flat, especially with a big bike on your back it's hard work.

Stephen Adams
Mission accomplished, getting the overall under 23's title. That was one of my targets of the year. I did what I had to do, I was doing all right for the first couple of laps I was in the top 10 then I just started to fade a bit so I just hung in there and finished.

Jody Crawforth
I was trying as hard as I could in the running today, I think if it had been a bit drier I would have stood a better chance. I've just not had as good a form as I did last year. This is probably my worst season for about 2 or 3 years now. Disappointed to get second today with only a few points in it, if I could have got round Jebb it would have made a difference, but never mind.
