2007 British Cycling Cyclo-Cross Championships

January 6 and 7, Southampton Sports Centre

On January 6 and 7 the biggest event on the UK cyclo-cross calendar returned to Southampton, following a 13-year hiatus. BritishCycling.org.uk was there to capture the action.

Day 2: Womens, Junior Mens & Senior/Under-23 Men's Championship

Phil DixonWith little rain to speak of, it was a dry but still ever so muddy day for the riders on day 2 of the National Cyclo-Cross Championships in Southampton today where another three events were held on a course which resembled a sea of mud.

In the first race of the day for the Elite Women, defending champion Helen Wyman showed the rest of the field the way home to win the title ahead of teammate Gabby Day whilst Isla Rowntree was third.

The Junior Women's Champion was Amy Thompson whilst Louise Day won the Veteran title. In event 2, Youth winner last year, Alex Paton romped home to win the Junior Mens title after a tough race in the difficult conditions. Scott Thwaites was second and Jonathon McEvoy third in the race.

In the final race of the day, the big guns came out to play in the mud but there was no mucking around by Great Britian Cycling Team's Olympic Development coach for mountain biking, Phil Dixon who opened up a gap on the scrap for second and held them all off on his way to winning the Elite Mens title from Nick Craig with Rob Jebb in third. In the Under 23's, it was Ian  Bibby who took the title home. Pictures & Report: >>>>

Day 1: Veteran 50+, Youth & Veteran 40-49 Championships

It was a wet wet old day in Southampton today where the opening day of the National Cyclo-Cross championships would see three races.

In the first race of the day for the Over 50's, it was a brilliant battle between Roy Hunt and Martin Booth but two last lap crashes cost Booth dearly and Hunt, recovering from a serious crash in December, too full advantage to win the title.

Michael Butler dominated the Youth Boys race whilst Rebecca Thompson took advantage of a tactical error by Corrine Hall to win the Under 16 girls title.

In the final race of the day (Veteran 40-49), another excellent battle took place between Chris Young and Geoff Giddings and Young's dogged determination saw him come through on the final lap to win that championship. Pictures & Report >>>>
