The under-12 race gets underway with some well wrapped up parents watching
High winds and high drama were the order of the day at the latest round of the CX National Trophy held in Bradford. Winter finally seemed to have arrived as the latest round of the National Trophy Series pulled into Peel Park, Bradford, with keen biting winds adding to the spongy, muddy painfully slow course.
Rob Jebb was the surprise winner of the senior race after a tumultuous battle between Jody Crawforth, Stuart Bowers and an ever so unfortunate Dave Collins. Jebb, the 6 time winner of the prestigious and extremely challenging 3 Peaks race, was delighted that at last a win at the National Trophy series which had so far eluded him, was his, against a full field of worthy opponents.
The senior race roars away with Jody Crawforth (in green) leading the way
As the field took off at full flight down the tarmac concourse, it was soon apparent that this was not going to be an easy win by any imagination. By the end of lap one Stuart Bowers was first to hit the punishing flight of 14 steps, just before the dash to the finish line with Dan Booth clinging tightly to his wheel. Just a few seconds behind came the rest of the field, strung out and getting increasingly muddy.
Dave Collins, looking strong once again, took charge of the race on the second lap, until a slippery bend caused a heavy fall, leaving him in furious chase mode having lost at least 8 places. At the head of the group a battle was raging now between Rob Jebb, Jody Crawforth and Stuart Bowers, whilst behind Collins was picking up places fast.
Bowers and Collins were on collision course!
With just 2 laps to go Collins managed to get into the thick of the action once more at the front, with Jebb, Crawforth and Bowers, only to suffer another devastating setback. A tussle in the singletrack sent Collins over his handlebars, sprawling into the bushes, losing his saddle into the process. As he struggled valiantly to the pits for a bike change he once more started losing valuable places.
Jebb meanwhile was a marked man with Crawforth and Bowers keeping a tight reign on him. A tumble on the last lap left Crawforth struggling for gears, whilst Bowers started to suffer with guilt for perhaps causing his mate Collins to crash. It was all that Jebb needed to open an ever so slight gap.
Winner Rob Jebb skates round a slippery corner, with Crawforth and Bowers hot on his heels
The final sprint up the stairs was the deciding factor with no one able to match the former Skyrunning World Champion and he crossed the line to take the win. A disappointed Crawforth came in just seconds behind to take 2nd whist a delighted but remorseful Bowers took a well-earned 3rd. Despite all his set backs Collins still came home in the top 10, a placing not reflective of his impressive form.
Series leader Phil Dixon, also had a less than perfect race, with a chance collision ripping off a tub, leaving him to run for half the course, putting him well down the field. He too then spent the rest of the race reclaiming positions and points, he finally came in behind Nick Craig to take 5th spot but unfortunately he had to relinquish the leaders jersey to Crawforth. Just 9 points separate Dixon and Crawforth with just 1 race remaining the battle for the overall win will surely be intense.
Tom Last riding only his second race in the series put in an outstanding performance to take the win in the under-23's, putting nearly 2mins between him and 2nd placed rider Ross Creber, who narrowly squeezed out Ian Legg in an exciting sprint finish. Stephen Adams finishing 4th walked away with the leader's jersey, just 10 points clear of Ian Legg.
In the women's race Gabby Day took her first win of the series. Showing immense strength and confidence she led from the start and never looked back, increasing her lead, lap by lap to take the win well over 2 mins clear of second placed rider. This spot went to reigning junior CX champion Amy Thompson on her first race of the series. She was happy with her performance with her aim to peak for the Nationals in 4 weeks. Making it a family affair on the podium, Gabby's mum Louise was top vet and also claimed 3rd spot overall.
Women and Junior Race Winners Gabby Day and Alex Paton
Gabby now has a virtually unassailable hold on the leader's jersey, barring unfortunate incidents she should go on to take the overall title. Raleigh ERV junior ladies Annie Last and Jessica Roberts both line up behind Day with 100 points each, so the battle will be on between this two for the remaining podium positions, though Gabby 's Mum Louise could steal a march on the youngsters and easily snatch a podium position too.
In the junior race Alex Paton seemed to be fired up from riding the European Cyclo-Cross champs the previous day. Despite tired legs, the VC Deal/Activ rider burst to the front and stayed there, battling against strong winds and treacherous mud to claim his second victory of the series. Scott Thwaites & David Fletcher also present at the Europeans the previous day, chased hard, but could not catch Paton. Thwaites managed to narrow the gap to 15secs, while a tired Fletcher had to conceded 3rd spot to a fast finishing Sam Webster and doing so lost valuable points which enabled first year junior Paton to slip on the leader's jersey, with just 3 points separating him from Fletcher, going into the final round.
Paton's team mate's Michael Butler and Max Sykes also returned home that day retaining their leaders jerseys in the under 16 and under 14 races with good strong performances that gave them both wins.
In the Under 16's race, Butler once more had the usual rivals to contend with in the form of Will Verney, Daniel Mclay and Luke Gray. Butler soon took control of the race dominating it from the front. Mclay meanwhile had an almighty battle with Verney, and despite tired legs from riding Revolution the previous night, finally opened a small gap to the finish to take 2nd behind Butler. Gray spent the race virtually tied to a piece of elastic, riding hard to keep in contention with the battle ahead, unfortunately the elastic snapped just before the finish allowing Douglas Roberts to get past and pick up 4th spot.
Max Sykes just relished mixing it with the under 16's giving Luke Gray a right old ding dong, before Gray managed to drop the younger rider who still came home to take first spot in the under 14's, making it 4 wins out of 4, just under 2mins adrift of team mate Butlers winning ride in the older boys race, placing him 6th overall. Josh Papworth rode well to take second and finished a creditable 8th overall too. Sam Lowe took 3rd.
Both Butler and Sykes have undoubtedly sewn up the overall series with just 1 round remaining the fight is now on for the remaining podium positions.
In the Under 16's Daniel McLay and Luke Gray have just 4 points separating them in 2nd & 3rd spot, whilst Will Verney is lurking in 4th. A disastrous race for either of these 2 could be all that Verney needs to pick up a podium finish.
The Youth riders enjoyed the muddy conditions
In the under 14's Sam Lowe looks pretty solid in his 2nd spot, but 3rd is still wide open. Hugo Humphreys' two disappointing finishes have left the door open, with Josh Papworth leaning on it. Just 2points now separate these two for the final overall podium place.
Rebecca Thompson was the one to beat in the under 14's girls event and once more she was unbeatable with another win to add to her other 3. Hannah Shenton resplendent in her new Raleigh ERV kit took 2nd with Corinne Hall picking up 3rd. Whilst Thompson dominates the battle for overall leader, only 8 points separate Shenton and Hall for the final podium placings.
With Roy Hunt unavoidingly missing the latest round of the grand vets race due to a recent collision with a car, Barry Kipling his usual adversary was left in the position of at last being able to slip on the leader's jersey. The win on the day was not to be his as that was claimed by Joseph Rowe, with a mere 10sec advantage over runner up John Galway. Kipling came in to take 3rd after a good race between all 3 men.
Despite the accident Hunt will be back in the saddle for the remaining round, but he will now have mountain to climb to reclaim his jersey. If Kipling has a dire ride then Hunt could feasible steal back his crown, but then so could Joseph Rowe, it'll be an interesting race.
The vets stream away from the start with Geoff Giddings (in yellow) leading the way
Once again in the Vets race it turned into a procession, eventually, with slow starting Chris Young taking his time on his local course, moving through the pack with ease. To begin with it was David Stevens setting the pace with Geoff Giddings resplendent in the leaders jerseys close behind. By half way the lead had changed hands and it was now the ever-confident Young who held the reins of the race, whist Giddings and Stevens battled it out behind, with Giddings taking at least one bad tumble on one of the treacherous corners.
Giddings and Young, top vets on the day
With an extensive lead and victory secured, nearly, Young, ever the showman dismounted his bike and began walking the 100m towards the finish line. Much speculation rumbled through the crowd as he ambled towards the finish stopping at least once to have a chat. A quick glance behind him showed Giddings sprinting to the finish line, as Young casually wheeled his bike across the line. His winning margin now a mere 5secs. Young's reason for the walk was that he didn't need to win by such a huge margin! Giddings once more picked up his 4th consecutive 2nd spot, whilst Dave Stevens finished his race in 3rd. Giddings must surely now be guaranteed the overall title, even if he has to walk to the finish in the final round. Meanwhile Young looks like he's closing in on the 2nd podium position with only 3 points now separating him and Stevens, though let's not forget Martin Eadon in 4th - he could just pull a result out of the bag and clinch one of the remaining podium spots.
The final round takes place in Derby and by that time a whole new crop of National Cyclo-Cross Champions will have been decided. Will the performances given at Peel Park be pointers to who will take the top honours at Southampton? Who knows? What we do know is that the competition will be fierce and probably by the final round of the National Trophy Series there may even be old and some new scores to settle. Either way the cross season is definitely going to end on a high. Why not come and see the UK's best in action, either at the National Champs in Southampton 6th & 7th January or at the last round of the National Trophy Series at Derby 14th January. All are welcomed but wrap up warm!
Rider Comments:
Rob Jebb
Absolutely delighted, fantastic. It's nice to do it as people say your just good at the three Peaks, and it's nice to do it on a proper Cyclo-Cross course. I've never been with Jody (Crawforth) before in a race ever so it was a good battle. He crashed with a couple of laps to go, but I managed to stay upright and got away.
Jody Crawforth
I was feeling really good, Rob was going really well. I thought I could get a gap so I attacked, I got caught back up in the muddy bit and then I crashed into Dave (Collins) when he crashed on the corner. On the last lap I crashed into the mud, my handlebars went sideways and I couldn't get my gears. I was lucky to get 2nd as I was down to 4th on the last lap after the crash.
Stuart Bowers
I was there from the start today, I was in the lead group from the off. Felt pretty good, had a couple of little digs off the front as well. However with the last lap or so to go my head was everywhere because unfortunately I brought a good friend off. Dave (Collins) had fought his way back to the group just as we were entering a tricky section and we were all tussling for position and poor Dave went over the bars into a bush and lost his saddle. I'd taken out one of my mates and I felt really bad, it was nothing malicious but I lost my head for a lap as I felt really bad. That aside I had a really good race.
Max Sykes
I've not had a good week, Monday and Tuesday I was off with a sore throat and I had a pretty poor start today, so I was a bit worried that I wouldn't do that well. But I did all right and I almost caught Luke (Gray). I caught him, then he dropped me but I tried so hard to get back to him and he just went away. I was catching him again but it wasn't enough. Think I got 7th overall, which I'm really happy with. I struggled with this type of course they just don't suit me, so I'm even more pleased with my win.
Josh Papworth
It was a good race, quite sticky along some of the bits at the back and really slippy on some of the corners but it was a great course. Pleased to have got 2nd here, the last 2 rounds I've had mechanicals so I'm pleased to get on the podium again.
Dan Mclay
Will (Verney) was riding well today and so was Michael (Butler). I was surprised I got 2nd in the end as I was riding Revolution last night. I enjoyed working hard up the hills it seemed to work well for me today.
Michael Butler
A tough course with loads of mud at the bottom of the course, which you kept crossing before climbing back to the top of the course. I was a bit worried for the first lap and a half as it wasn't just Will (Verney) that was with me, Dan (McLay) was there too and he came past me at one point. The pressure to perform at the National makes it really hard but hopefully my ride today will send out a strong message to my main rivals.
Chris Young
I've been struggling a bit these last 2 weeks with training so I wasn't too sure how I was going to go today. I eventually got going and being the local boy the pressure was on. I decided to walk because I didn't need that big a lead really did I?! I could afford to walk to the finish.
Geoff Giddings
Good ride today I was pleased with that. I needed to overhaul Dave Stevens on the last lap really. He had a cracking start but started to fade at the end so I managed to get past him in the end. It was very dicey out there today and for a big lad I'm a long way off the ground!
Dave Stevens
I had a bit too fast a start and then I just blew a little towards the end. I changed my bike at one point and I had too much air in the tyres and I couldn't get round the corners and Geoff (Giddings) got me. To be fair he was going well though, and he deserved his 2nd spot. Chris (Young) is a real cracking rider, he has his notorious slow start and then he goes past you like you're standing still.
Joseph Rowe
It was slippy, I fell a couple of times, but it was a good competitive race, to and froing, with 3 of us in the lead. I pushed myself on the last lap, caught up with the lad in front, John (Galway), he then slipped off round the back part of the course, so I just pushed on and won it, fantastic my first win, really pleased.
Barry Kipling
A good race, but I felt a little bit sad, I've been chasing the green jersey behind Roy (Hunt) and to get it this way is not what I wanted, though I'm sure he doesn't mind. As long as he gets well that's all that matters.
Scott Thwaites
We all (Paton, Thwaites, Fletcher, Webster) raced the Europeans yesterday, so we're all a bit tired. We gave Alex (Paton) a bit too much, he's strong lad. I gave it all I had with 2 laps to go but it wasn't enough, Alex rode a great race and deserved to win.
Sam Webster
I went too hard at the start, I bonked in the middle and I just felt on the last lap why not go for it. I gave it all I could and aimed to get in front of Fletcher before the steps. I ran as hard as I could despite a touch of cramp, put my head down and absolutely battered it. I was feeling pretty tired after yesterday. I started 60th on the grid and got 20 people back so pretty pleased with that, so today was a bonus.
Amy Thompson
Really pleased to have picked up 2nd overall and 1st junior in my first Cyclo-Cross race this season. I was really enjoying it, you know wind, mud - it was a proper cross.
Louise Day
I'm getting better each race I do, especially with the technical stuff and the mud, I'm learning more all the time. I try and chase Gabby all the time, I always ask how's Gabby doing, otherwise I'll get distracted. She got me into this, I only started doing this 3 years ago, it's all her fault.
Gabby Day
I was unsure how I'd go today, I had the Euros yesterday and it was a really hard course. But I felt strong today and kept working hard and opened up a gap so I'm really pleased.
Alex Paton
Good race, I'm really pleased with it. I went out hard, despite the race yesterday where I went hard as well, I just kept the pressure here, tapping it out through each section. I had loads of practise at the Euros for the slippery conditions, as it was very slippy there with lots of running. I felt strong on the running for a change today.
