Urban Pips Dixon in Ipswich

National Trophy Round 2

Ipswich, 29 October 2006

Words and Pics by Joolze Dymond

Ipswich provided both a fantastic course and glorious weather for the 2nd round of the Cyclo Cross National Trophy, which both contributed to a brilliant day's racing full of spills, thrills and upsets along the way.

The course was in complete contrast to the opening round at Cheltenham, providing a circuit that tested the technical and physical strengths and weaknesses of all the competitors. Ribbons of tape criss-crossed the park providing off camber corners, fast straights combined with a quick spurt in the woods, constantly riding up and down inclines before bursting back into the sunshine. The hurdles were thoughtfully set against the backdrop of Chantry Mansion, riders dismounting without being able to soak up the beauty and the history of their surroundings as they pursued their quarry. Oh and a devious double sandbank was thrown in for good measure, to test the riders to the max.

Michael Butler (right)

First out to tackle the course were the Youth and Under 14 categories. Michael Butler, keen to consolidate his opening round win, was first to the front, eagerly followed by Will Verney, with Luke Gray and Jordon Hook following closely behind. Soon it was a caravan of Verney and Butler with each taking it in turns to take the lead. By the final lap they were still neck-and-neck and the waiting crowds were rewarded with a furious sprint for the line, where Verney snatched victory over Butler. Meanwhile, just 16secs adrift, Hook came in to claim 3rd and with it those all-important points. Gray had a difficult race, experiencing mechanical problems, which left him down in 5th position behind Daniel McLay. With Verney missing the first round, Butler's second spot still saw him with enough points to retain his leaders jersey, with Hook just squeezing ahead of Gray to take 2nd overall so far.

Despite a few offs, Max Sykes still proved the dominant force in the under14's taking a comfortable win from Hugo Humphreys, with Sam Lowe once more taking 3rd. Sykes retains his overall lead with Humphreys having a much better race at Ipswich, just edging into 2nd spot in front of a consistent Lowe.

Rebecca Thompson showed a clean set of heels to all as she once more romped to victory in the youth women's race, despite suffering from a heavy cold. Corrine Hall once more had to settle for 2nd with Hannah Shenton taking 3rd and with it 1st in the Under 14 girls race.

In the vets race Geoff Giddings had another rival to contend with, in the form of Chris Young, now making his debut for the first time at a National Trophy Vets race. Giddings hoped to capitalise on Young's reputation as a slow starter and went from the gun, setting his usual high pace, testing to see who could stay with him. Cheltenham race winner and main rival Martin Eadon, resplendent in his new race kit, having secured a sponsorship deal with old friend and racing partner Peter Hargroves, of Hargroves Cycles, seemed to be at odds with the Ipswich course and didn't look his usual smooth self, unable to pick up Giddings' wheel. Meanwhile, confident Young moved through the course with ease picking off contenders along the way before breaking onto the front. Giddings tried to stay with Young but couldn't match the strong rider through the technical sections and so after 40 mins of racing the win went to Young, with Giddings picking up 2nd and Eadon pulling back 3rd. Just 2 points separates Eadon and Giddings on the overall standings with Eadon still retaining the leaders jersey. Giddings is even more hungry for a win, Eadon expects Mallory Park to be his day once more and now the added twist of Chris Young entering the mix, the next round and the overall standings look explosive.

Roy Hunt seemed to be in all sorts of trouble in the over 50's, with a number of falls on the opening lap placing him well down the field. Undeterred, Hunt composed himself and went on the charge, eventually finding himself back where he likes to be, in front and in charge of the race. This time he had company in the form of Barry Kipling, eagerly sticking to his wheel. A few digs later and Hunt broke clear to go on and take the win, with Kipling just 17sec behind in 2nd, whilst Joe Rowe took 3rd. Hunt goes into the next round with the leader's jersey, with two wins under his belt.

Patton (left) beats Fletcher (right) to the Junior victory

In the junior race it was a confident but tired Alex Paton who took this race on and came out triumphant. Paton, having just finished a hard week's training on the ODP (Olympic Development Programme) was hoping to improve on his disastrous 5th place in the opening round, but even he was astounded with his form in the race, coming as it did after such a hard workload. The delighted youngster punched the air has he crossed the line and then promptly nearly collapsed with the effort of the race. Alex recovered in time to see close rivals David Fletcher and Jonathon McEvoy sprint for 2nd spot. With these 2 riders neck and neck on the punishing upward finish, it was anyone's call who'd take it. Fletcher had it by a whisker, another rider delighted after a disappointing ride at the previous round with a ride made all the more impressive after a week's training on the ODP.

With his 3rd spot McEvoy still hangs on to the leader's jersey, but with Fletcher and Paton both now coming into form and separated by just 1 point, the remaining rounds are going to provide some interesting racing.

Womens winner Amy Hunt powers over a rise...

... beating Gabby Day into second spot

With Helen Wyman, now back in Belgium, all eyes were on who would take victory, and with it the leaders jersey, in the women's race. In contention were Wyman's team mate Gabriella Day, Amy Hunt, 3 Peaks winner Isla Rowntree, as well as juniors Jessica Roberts, Annie Last & Annabel Simpson. As the race progressed it was clear that Hunt and Day both had their hearts set on a victory. Rowntree was keen to keep in the mix and kept Hunt & Day in her sights. Hunt was content to let Day lead her round, confident that if it came to a sprint, she could pull it out of the bag. She was right, with both girls vying for the win, the ensuing sprint was electric, with Hunt claiming an emphatic victory. Rowntree came in just 25 secs later to take 3rd. Her 2nd spot was enough to secure Day the coveted leader's jersey, with a disappointed Last doing enough to retain her 2nd overall and her Raleigh team mate Jessica Roberts now moving up to 3rd. Jessica also added the junior women's race win to her tally, making her a happy lady with an unexpected win around the tricky Ipswich course.

The appearance of German rider Malte Urban on the start line of the senior's race certainly put the cat amongst the pigeons. Having ridden the World Cup race the day before in Tabor, finishing a creditable 17th place, Urban was still the man to beat. From the gun the pace was fierce with everyone giving it their all. Despite numerous attacks, Urban found it hard to shake off a following group containing Phil Dixon, Dan Booth, Jody Crawforth and Ian Bibby, with the rest of the field strung out behind as if secured by a piece of elastic as the German rider surged forward and eased up the pack seemed to concertina behind him. As the race progressed the European style of racing began to take its tool, as the pack disintegrated, leaving a core few trying to keep on terms with Urban. With just a few laps remaining the canny German attacked once more, this time opening a small gap that he managed to maintain as he crossed the line with the win under his belt. Meanwhile in Urban's wake the race was on for 2nd and those all-important points. Another exciting sprint was on the cards for the crowds that lined the finishing straight as Jody Crawforth tried to hold off a determined Phil Dixon. Dixon just had the strength to pass the Evans rider, to once more push him into 3rd spot, whilst he took his second 2nd place in the series, whilst under 23 rider Ian Bibby just a second behind took 4th.

Elite Men: Left: Winner Malte Urban. Right: Third placed Jody Crawforth

With series leader Ian Field absent from Ipswich it was all change on the leader board. Dixon now lays claim to the prestigious leader's jersey, with Crawforth just 10 points adrift in second, predicting the next win will be his. Ian Bibby not only takes the Under 23's leader's jersey, but also his fine finishing in the race puts him 3rd in the overall positions too.

With 2 of 5 rounds now completed, the racing is set to get even better as the sought-after leaders' jerseys continues to change hands. Mallory Park plays host to the next round and it's there we'll see if fortune favours the brave as the competitors get stuck in.

Rider's comments

Michael Butler- Youth

"Hard work, much harder than Cheltenham and much more slippery as well. The bank at the back of the course was really tricky. You had to get it right each time, if you didn't you could easily lose a couple of seconds there. Will managed to get in front of me on the last lap going up the bank, I made a mistake and he just opened up a gap and I couldn't get him back."

Will Verney- Youth

"Yeah, a good start to my cyclo-cross season. On the start I was on the 5th row so it was quite hard to get to the front. I just had to calm myself down so I could just move up the field smoothly. I used my advantages to get up the field and I kept trying a few little attacks just to try and get away but the others just kept sticking on my wheel. I didn't want to use 100% early on, but on the last lap I took advantage of Michael's mistake on the sand bank and just powered away. I kept on about 90% just in case I found myself in a sprint finish, but I didn't need to I the end."

Rebecca Thompson- Youth Girl

"I've had a pretty bad cold all week and wasn't sure if I was going to race here, I just didn't feel up to it. But I did and I really enjoyed it. Good course - really long fast straights, but with loads of slippery corners, a total contrast to Cheltenham, especially in the wooded section here."

Hugo Humphries - Under 14

"Fast, quite tight course. You had to watch it on the corners a lot, it was really slippery. I enjoyed it though. It was a more demanding course, which is good as it meant the ones with the skill and abilities were showing through more here rather than those with just the strength and power. It was a good race all in all."

Hannah Stanton - Under 14 Girls

"Yeah it was a hard race but really good. I enjoyed the course more here than the first round, this was much harder, much more technical but also much more fun to race."

Max Sykes - Under 14

"I came off twice but despite that I really enjoyed the course. I managed to lose a lot of my gap but still managed to take the win. Good to make it two wins in a row."

Geoff Giddings - Vets

"Excellent course - nice and flowing but greasy on the corners - certainly a lot different to Cheltenham. Thought I'd have a good dig at the start again just to see who could come with me. I got away just after the first lap and I knew Chris Young was a pretty slow starter but strong finisher, so I tried to stick with him when he got up to me. I managed it for a bit but he was too strong in the technical sections. So 2nd again! One day I'll get the win."

Chris Young - Vets

"I couldn't make the first round due to work commitments, but hopefully I'll be doing the rest of the series now. This is the first National Trophy Vets race I've ever done. Up 'til now I've always raced in the senior event. My son wanted to do these this year, so I thought if I'm trailing all around the country with him I might as well do them myself. Nice course, some good technical and testing sections. Really good. The guy that came 2nd he was quite hard to pull back after the start, but I got him in the end. An old guy like me going that fast - it shouldn't happen."

Roy Hunt - Over 50

"I had a good start; I just came off a few times which left me in chase mode. I just hit the deck twice I think, I was trying too hard, hit the corners and just wiped out, ended up 10-12 places behind. I just about pulled it back and then found someone was stuck on my wheel; young Kipling - so it took me 3 or 4 laps to get rid of him eventually. I kept putting some digs in until a bit of a gap opened and just dug deep again. I enjoyed it - a very good course, it was hard all those little ups and downs but there was a lot to keep you occupied.

Martin Eadon - Vets

"I struggled a bit just getting to grips with the field. Geoff was strong again, Chris is always gonna come from the back but I'm looking at the next event now. Mallory is my event - it should suit me in a way but you know everybody has their day and today I was just that little bit over the edge, so who knows what'll happen at Mallory."

Alex Paton - Junior

"Really great race, best so far, best for a long time. I had a really hard week leading up to this with the British Cycling ODP (Olympic Development Programme), mountain bike training up in Yorkshire. Felt bad in the week, felt great on the weekend. I had a really strong ride today. I got my head sorted, got a plan, kept to it, kept rocking on at my own pace really and it seemed to work. I just powered away from people along the drag at the back, so great. Great improvement on the first round where I got 5th, best way to go.

Amy Hunt - Women's Winner

"It was a really good race. It was so hard to get away. I had a dig about 2 laps to go but because it's so open, I had a go, but I thought , 'There's no way I'm wasting energy', so it came down to a sprint and I was hoping it would go alright. I let Gabrielle lead on the last lap; it's so hard out there as it so open. So I let her lead and just thought as long as I get out of that bottom corner all right, I should be alright, luckily it went to plan.
Good day out for the Hunt family, though this time my dad fell off and I didn't for once.

Dave Fletcher - Junior

"Very good race. I've just had a hard week's straining on the ODP up in Yorkshire, so I wasn't expecting to do as well as I did to be honest. I was only really expecting top 5 if I was lucky. I had a bad race at Cheltenham, just got back after a rest week and was just getting used to riding again. Today was excellent. I had just enough sprint to get past Jonathan.

Jonathan McEvoy - Junior

"I had a good start but then going through the woods I had a bit of a mechanical, my chain got stuck in my wheel and I lost a bit of time sorting it out. I got back and David started to attack again. If it hadn't been for the mechanical I'd have been a bit more up there."

Jessica Roberts - Junior Women

"I was very pleased with my race; it was good, but very hard. It wasn't as fast as Cheltenham; it was so twisty, although I didn't like it as much, really happy to get the win."

Gabriella Day - Women

"My team mate Helen (Wyman) won the leader's jersey at the last race, she's now racing in Belgium so won't be doing any more, so she told me to make sure I get the win and/or get the jersey today. It was a really close race. I had to lead on some of the trickier bits, as I was the slower one on those and if I'd let Amy get in front there I'd have lost a lot of time on her. I'm really happy it came down to the sprint at the end, even though Amy got past me, it was a much better result than Cheltenham. I'm riding a lot better here than at Cheltenham so I'm happy to have got to wear the leader's jersey at last.

Malte Urban - Senior

"It was a nice course, well prepared and a great crowd. I'm very happy to come to England. I last came here 15 years ago as a junior where I managed to secure 5th place in the World Champs. These courses in England seem to suit me. It was a tough race, all the guys in the race knew before that I would probably be the one to beat today and everybody was looking for me. The guys had a good race. I was a little tired from yesterday's world cup race in the Czech Republic, I got to the hotel very late, but I still did a good ride."

Phil Dixon - Senior

"The German made it more interesting. He's got real typical European cross style. He goes real quick then backs it off, real quick and backs it off again. Early on I was with him, then he worked it out he couldn't get away, so he settled with a group of us, then attacked, went really hard and I was last wheel and lost contact. He went, which left the rest of us chasing for 2nd. With about 4 or 5 laps to go I went into the woods and crashed - proper face-planted. I had to get myself back together, recompose and work my way back up. I made it harder than it should have been. I worked a bit with Paul Oldham to get back up to the group and caught them on the last lap. I was leading up the finishing straight and Jody came round me, but I used my sprint to good effect and got 2nd. In general I was really tired before the event, I'd been running an ODP for the Juniors."

Ian Bibby - Under 23

"Pretty good race, I was struggling towards the start but got into it towards the end."

Jody Crawforth - Senior

"I felt better in this race than at the last round. Last one I felt awful, but I had been to a roller disco the night before, so I know better now! The German guy just went off while we were all napping really, he got a good gap, which meant we were then racing for 2nd. I thought I had it really but I messed up the last corner, lost it by half a wheel, I was just getting tied up at the end with cramp. This sort of course is better for me than Cheltenham, especially as I'm not as strong as I should be. The next one is at Mallory Park, I'll win that one."
