Northern League: Stockport v Hull

Hull started this vital Northern league match well with a 6-4 to Andy Angell / Matt Beharrell before Chris Eaton / Mark Wylie levelled the scores in the next heat. The visitors looked to be edging away with maximum wins in heats three and six but Stockport soon hit back. Heat 7 had to be re-run several times with Hull's Corey Graham excluded for falling whilst leading, before Adam Stephenson split Chris Eaton and Mark Wylie. The next heat was a 7-3 for Stockport's Terry Norman / Ben Higham, and Hull went into the Interval with a slender one point lead.

Hull seemed revived after the break and started brightly with a Matt Beharrell / Corey Graham 6-4. Heat 10 was crucial as first Chris Eaton was excluded for legging and then Graham Johnston moved at the tapes in the re-run to give Hull a 10 point lead. This seemed to knock the wind out of the home sides sails as Simon Plows / Darren Spencer and Andy Angell / Matt Beharrell quickly scored maximum wins to secure the league points. Stockport's Dylan Radcliffe / Ben Higham took a good 7-3 in the penultimate heat before Adam Stephenson wrapped things up with a good win in the final race.

Andy Angell continued his fine form for Hull being unbeaten from four starts. Matt Beharrell formed an excellent pairing with Andy and was only beaten once in a strong display. Hull again relied on a good team performance and Simon Plows responded with some good races, as did Adam Stephenson who had a particularly tough programme draw. Stockport's Terry Norman put in a typically strong ride while Chris Eaton also rode well and Ben Higham was the surprise of the day with some fine races. Alan Farrell refereed what was sometimes a heated match in a fair and dignified manner.

Hull now face Heckmondwike before hosting Stoke in the final match of the season, which will either decide the league title or send the two teams into a play-off.

Stockport 66: Terry Noman 17+, Ben Higham 12+1, Chris Eaton 10, Mark Wylie 9, Graham Johnston 8+1, Dylan Radcliffe 8, Matt Lush 2.

Hull 80: Andy Angell 16, Matt Beharrell 16+2, Adam Stephenson 13+2, Corey Graham 11, Simon Plows 15+1, Darren Spencer 6+1, Lewis Aylmer 2, Andy Norrie 2.

Combination:

Hull lost their 100% combination league record to a youthful Stockport side, who now need Hull to slip up against Stoke in order to take the title themselves. The visitors started badly as Lewis Aylmer fell while leading the opening heat to give Ben Higham / Ali Lam a 7-2. Hull levelled the scores with a 6-4 to Andy Norrie / Ian Swanborough and a 6-3 to Jon Wilkinson / Andy Moody.

Heat 6 was crucial as Ben Higham / Ali Lam recorded a 7-2 after Andy Moody was excluded for slow riding. Hull responded with a John Wilkinson / Andy Moody 6-3 in heat 9 to narrow the deficit to 2 points, but Stockport took a 7-3 through Matt and Jack Lush in the following heat. Ben Higham / Ali Lam made sure of the points with a 7-2 in heat 11 after Jon Wilkinson moved on the tapes.

Ben Higham rode to an excellent maximum with Ali Lam and Jack Lush also impressive for the home side. The visitors will be disappointed with this result and will look to put things right and clinch the title against Stoke.

Stockport 63: Ben Higham 14+2, Ali Lam 12+1, Dylan Radcliffe 10, Jake Read 6+1, Jack Lush 12+1, Matt Lush 8+2, Joe Pickford 1.

Hull 52: Ben Swanborough 6, Lewis Aylmer 9, Andy Norrie 11, Ian Swanborough 10+1, Jon Wilkinson 8, Andy Moody 6+1.

Northern League: Astley & Tyldesley Report

After some excellent wins this season in the Northern League, it was a below strength Astley & Tyldesley side that took to the track at Heckmondwike on Sunday. And A & T paid the price by being beaten by a Heckmondwike side, that recorded their first win of the season. A & T kept the scores close in the first half, trailing by two points at the interval, but the home side took three maximum heat wins in the second half, to give a final score of Heckmondwike 81 Astley & Tyldesley 68. Tomasz Wlodarczyk lost once and Remi Burchardt won three races before incurring a gate exclusion, but only Ben Dickenson provided strong support. Heckmondwike had former British Champion Colin Wheeler making his debut for them and he was beaten only twice, with solid scores from the rest of their team. James Carter and Wlodarczyk managed to spoil each other's maximum chances.

Northern League match result

Heckmondwike 81 Astley & Tyldesley 68

Leicester v Sheffield

Leicester's depleted side were no match for a strong Sheffield outfit who made light work of the visitors challenge.

Leicester's evergreen Norman Venson top scored for the Monarchs and was good value in every race. Kev Burns, whose score was marred by a tape exclusion, but otherwise looked in superb form, was probably the pick of the visitors. Carl Jarvis lowered the colours of the excellent Sierderski/Brown partnership, apart from that win he was involved in some great races but invariably ended up at the back! Unfortunatly the remainder of the team struggled and Leicester will have to look at their future ML set up as it's probably unfair to expect youngsters to compete at this level.

Sheffield's three Polish riders were all good value, and all dropped out of rides to give reserves Jono Birks and young Liam Webster extra outings. Jamie Brown and Leon Wild rode well and benefited from some good riding from their more experienced team partners. A good sporting contest with, considering the scoreline, some excellent racing.

Sheffield 106 (J Birks 18, J Brown 16+1, D Pilas 16)

Leicester Monarchs 73 (N Venson 16, K Burns 15, C Jarvis 11+1)

Combination

Sheffield 50+21 = 71

Leicester 77

Unfortunatly Leicester had to use five riders from the previous match, and whilst the girls and youngsters struggled in the first match they were probably too good for the combination! Martin Gamble dropped just one point for Sheffield and young Kyle Brough looked a good prospect. Matt Hartshorn topped the Leicester chart with paid 19 points.

South-East Round-Up

East Anglia held their one afternoon, extravaganza at Mill Lane, Great Blakenham on Saturday with the staging of the East Anglian Under 10's, Under 13's Under 16's Riders Championships plus two Test Matches with Suffolk against Norfolk at Under 13 level and Under 16 level, so a full days racing was held writes Glenn Grange.

The Under 10 Riders Championship kicked off the racing with Great Blakenham's Phillip Day taking the title from his club mate Michael Blackwell, with fellow Suffolk rider from Ipswich Ross Knight taking the third place. The only representative from Norfolk was Hethersett's Oliver Forder-Wilcox who qualified as the Norfolk Under 10 Champion.

In the Under 13 competition, Ipswich's Liam Overett, as the pre- meeting favourite, took the Championship with a 20 point maximum from from Ashley Hill of Ipswich and Robert Warminger of The Money Centre / Norwich club. Both these two riders had finished with 18 points, so a run-off had to take place, with Ipswich?s Ashley Hill defeating Robert Warminger to take the runners-up position.

The Under 16 event was next, with Great Blakenham's dynamic duo Daniel Osborne and Marcus Szyszlyk both finishing with 19 points. In the run-off, Osborne put his greater skill into action to finish ahead of his club mate Szyszlyk. There had to be another run-off, this time for third place, with Great Blakenham's Andy Turnbull lining up with Hethersett;s Phillip Adams and Norwich?s James Wakefield after all three riders had scored a total of 16 points. With Wakefield picking Gate 1, Adams Gate 2 and Turnbull Gate 3, it was Wakefield who sped from the gate and held of some determined challenges to take the chequered flag from Adams and Turnbull in that order to take the third place.

Next up was the Under 13 Test Match between Suffolk and Norfolk, and what a one sided affair it was. Norfolk, with only 6 riders to call on, included Suffolk rider Matt Hill as a guest in their line-up. From the off, Suffolk dominated the match and showed that they were head and shoulders above the Norfolk riders as they romped to a 124 - 55 victory. If it wasn't for Norfolk's Robert Warminger winning Heat 5, it would have been a complete whitewash for the Suffolk team who showed great character and skill in their domination. For Suffolk, Nathan Hunting top scored with 18+2, whilst Ashley Hill and Daniel Knights scored with 17+3. For Norfolk, Robert Warminger led the scoring with 11 followed by Tommy Wakefield and Axl Johnson with 9 points each.

What the Under 13 match lacked in excitement, the Under 16 match had it all. This turned out to be one of the most exciting matches of the 2008 Cycle Speedway season as it had passion, skill and all things that you would have expected from a local derby Test Match. It was a credit to both sets of riders who had the utmost respect for each other. Firs of all, Suffolk drew first blood in Heat 4 with a 7 - 3 heat win, but that was equalled out in the next heat with a Norfolk 7 - 3 heat win.

James Day suffered an exclusion in Heat 8 to give Norfolk the lead for the first time (38 - 41, but a Suffolk 6 - 4 heat win in Heat 9 made the score at the interval Suffolk 44, Norfolk 45. When ever one side managed a heat advantage, in the next heat it was cancelled out by the other side and so this went on throughout the second half. Norfolk only required a shared scoring heat in Heat 18, and this they got through a Daniel Chambers heat win to leave a very tired Norfolk side the winners by 89 - 88. For Suffolk, Daniel Osborne top scored with 19 points, followed by Marcus Szyszlyk 18 + 2 and Andy Turnbull 18 points. For Norfolk, it was an all round team effort with Phillip Adams top scoring with 15+2, Daniel Chambers 15+1 and James Wakefield 14 points. Thanks guys for putting on a brilliant match.

At a sunny Eaton Park, The Money Centre / Norwich 'Stars' were looking to keep their home record of wins in the 2008 South-East League Division One intact when they took on Ipswich 'Eagles', but with 5 first team riders out through injuries and non-availabilities, it was a strange looking Norwich side that took to the track with 5 Under 16 riders having to be called up. Norwich took an early lead in Heat 2 with a 6 - 4 heat win (11 - 9, but Ipswich cancelled that lead out with a 7 - 3 heat win in the next heat. Norwich then scored a 7 - 3 heat win in Heat 4, but Ipswich re-took the lead in Heat 5 with a 6 - 3 heat win (24 - 25). A Norwich 6 - 3 heat win and an Ipswich 7 - 3 heat win closed the first half?s racing leaving a score at the interval of Norwich 43, Ipswich 45.

The second half scoring quietened down and with the score at Norwich 78, and Ipswich 80 going into the last two heats, the match was all to race for. Ipswich though finished the match the stronger of the two sides by scoring 7 - 3 heat wins to go on and win the match by 84 - 94. For NorwichGary Colby led the scoring with 14+1, folowed by Lee Grange 13 and Joshua Colby 12+2. For Ipswich, Leon Yelland top scored with 18+1 with Leon Mower 17+2 and Dan Pike 17. The match winner though for Ipswich was George Solomon, who scored 15+2.

This was Norwich's first home defeat in the South-East League Division One for almost three years as they were last beaten in this League on October 2nd 2005 by Great Blakenham.

In the South-East Youth / Under 16 League encounter that followed, the Norwich Under 16's went on to make up for the disappointment of the first team losing by always being in command in their match. Never headed, Norwich had too much power on the day for Ipswich and scored heat wins at their leisure. Ipswich tried in vain to reduce the deficit, but when ever they scored heat wins, back came Norwich to cancel it out. All round scoring saw Norwich take the two League points making a final match score of Norwich 86, Ipswich 74. Norwich's leading points scorers were James Wakefield 21+1, Lewis Conner 15+2 and Joshua Colby 15+1. For Ipswich, George Solomon top scored with 19+1 with Jordan Stant 14+2 and Jamie Chittock 12 points the leading scorers.
