Leicester Monarchs vs Great Blakenham

Cycle Speedway Round-Up

Week Ending 21 Sept 2008

Sheffield Stars v Norwich Stars (Premier League)

With Sheffield having all sorts of team selection problems they knew they were in for no easy ride with the visit of Norwich. What was to follow was a hard fought tussle with the Norwich riders providing plenty of close exciting racing, with Marcin Szymanski and Dariusz Pilas back home in Poland, Radek Sieradzki suspended, Andy Angel & Darek Kurkowski unavailable and to top it all Ryan Hoyland breaking his wrist at Ipswich the day before the pressure was certainly on the rest of the squad.

Any pre match nerves quickly disappeared as Sheffield started off with a 7-2 courtesy of the two Chris's, Eaton & Turner over Craig Norton and unfortunate faller Ian Grange. A heat 2 6-4 from Pawel Kozloswki and Jamie Brown saw the Stars extend their lead. Norwich rallied through Cossey and Solomon before the rejuvenated Simon Gamble and Chris Turner got Sheffield back into their winning ways.

Norwich took maximum points in heat 5 before a number of shared heats led to the interval and 5 point lead for Sheffield. The second half started with Spear/Gamble maximum and another win for eventual Sheffield top scorer Mitchell Spear, the young Aussie rattling up an impressive 19pts.

Norwich kept the meeting close but just could not get their noses in front due in part to the disciplined team riding of Mick Knowles and Jamie Brown who did everything and more that was required of them.
Sheffield finished off the meeting with a final 7-3 to run out winners by 9pts, Norwich once again proved themselves worthy opponents and with good crop of youngsters coming through the ranks there future in the Premier League looks assured.

Sheffield 92: Mitchell Spear 19, Pawel Kozlowski 15+1, Chris Turner 14+2,

Norwich 83: Leigh Cossey 18, Craig Norton 13+2, Gary Colby 13

Norwich took the win in the Combination match by 79-46, the Norwich youngsters proving way to powerful for the home side.

Sheffield 46: Chris Turner 11, Jordan Gabbittas 9, Kyle Brough 9

Norwich 79: Liam Parker 15+1, Kieron Parr 14+1, Josh Colby 13+3

Leicester v Great Blakenham  (Premier League)

Leicester were in dominant mood against Great Blakenham notching 100 points with ease. The first half of the match saw the Monarchs cruise into a 12 point lead by half time, Pike suffering 2 exclusions which kept the scoreline closer than it may have been.

After the interval the home team stepped up a gear with all riders contributing. Nowacki notched a paid maximum whilst Hemsley was unbeaten in his 4 rides, whilst Mark Newey signed off his racing days at Slater Street with a paid win in his last ever race, a fitting finale for a great rider.

The visitors could only manage 4 race winners, one of those from Adam Peck who looked the pick of the Suffolk side's riders.

Leicester 105:  L Nowacki 17+3, D Hemsley 16, M Newey 14+3, M Wadhams 14+1, K Burns 12+1, N Venson 10+2, D Pike 10, N Whitehead 10

Great Blakenham 70 (A Peck 13+1, A Zielinski 13, J Brooke 11, J Studd 10+1, C Osborne 8, L Mower 7, R Pyke 6, D Osborne 2)

With the luxury of being able to track the rested Craig Marchant and Carl Jarvis, who both rode unbeaten, Leicester's combination team rode to an equally impressive victory. It was good to see Jake Hogan get back to his winning ways with a hard earned 12 points but all the team did their job.

Dan Osborne was top for the visitors with 16+1 whilst surprisingly Leon Mower failed to win a race for his team.

Leicester 70+17 = 87, Great Blakenham 50

Premier League Tables

With just one round of matches to go, Sheffield need a win at home to Poole on 5th October to keep their hopes alive.  If they fail to do so the title goes to Leicester, regardless of the outcome of their rearranged fixture at Horspath, which is not scheduled to take place until 2nd November.  In the Combination, Wednesfield must win at third placed Norwich in their final match, and then await Leicester's visit to Horspath before the outcome is decided.

Bury v Hull - Northern League

Hull travelled to Bury with a full strength side on a warm sunny day, and faced a home side who were missing a few regular first team members. The match started with a 6-4 to the visitors with Bury's Ben Scranage splitting Andy Angell and Matt Beharrell. Heat two was controversial with Bury's John Whiting falling on the first bend and Corey Graham and Neil Howarth colliding on the pits bend, with Bury's Neil Howarth excluded. Hull took the re-run by 7 points to 2 and won the next 3 heats by maximum scores to lead by 34 points to 15 after 5 heats. Bury recovered with 3 drawn heats before Hull's Lewis Aylmer / Antony Dalton raced to a 7-3 to give the visitors a 56-33 Interval lead.

The second half started with Bury's only heat win after Adam Stephenson was excluded for falling on the first bend and bringing down an opponent. Paul Dyson was making a rare appearance for the home side, but held off a spirited ride from Lewis Aylmer. Hull got back into their stride winning 5 of the next 6 heats including maximum wins to Andy Angell paired with Matt Beharrell and Adam Stephenson. The match was rounded off with two drawn heats thanks to wins for Bury's Ben Scranage and Neil Howarth.

Andy Angell was on top form for Hull completing an unbeaten score including an excellent pass on Ben Scranage in heat 4. Corey Graham only dropped one point from 4 starts, but once again it was an excellent team display that ensured the win. Simon Plows rode well after missing the last couple of matches due to holidays, and Antony Dalton looked sharp in only his second ride of the season. For the Goshen based side Ben Scranage and Neil Howarth had two good wins and Paul Dyson had a couple of vintage races. John Whiting was also in the thick of the action but they missed their absentee's and suffered down the team order. The match was fairly refereed by Jeff Radcliffe.

This result puts Hull as joint leaders of the Northern League with Stoke, they now face a tough trip to Stockport with a possible end of season decider with the Potteries side looming.

Bury 71: Ben Scranage 13, Micheal Kennedy 8, Neil Howarth 13+1, John Whiting 10, Chris Dyson 11, Paul Dyson 9+1, Dave Hardman 3, Steve Jarman 4.

Hull 106: Andy Angell 19+1, Matt Beharrell 11+3, Corey Graham 15, Adam Stephenson 9+2, Simon Plows 16, Darren Spencer 11+3, Antony Dalton 12+2, Lewis Aylmer 13.

A strong and experienced Hull side raced unbeaten against a young Bury side who included 7 riders separate from their first team. Much to their credit the home side never gave in and Liam Burke was always amongst the action. Ben Swanborough excelled for the visitors in another strong team display. This continues Hull's unbeaten season in the combination league and they now need to win one of their remaining two matches against close rivals Stockport or Stoke to clinch the title.

Bury 36: Liam Burke 8, Tom Spencer 3, Kelly Burke 4, Michael Kennedy 6, Robin Yang 8, Alex McDougal 4, Lauri Brierley 2, Carmen Brierley 2.

Hull 84: Ben Swanborough 16, Lewis Aylmer 6+2, Ian Swanborough 12+4, Andy Moody 16, Paul Beharrell 12+4, John Wilkinson 16, Antony Dalton 3+1, Matt Beharrell 3+1.

A & T Club Individual Championships

A & T hosted the 2008 Club Individual Championships under the Gin Pit floodlights in midweek. There was a good turn-out of 21 riders for the different classes, on a firm and grippy track, watched by a decent sized crowd.

This time Adam Watson beat Stefan Whitelegg, after both had finished on 11 points, with impressive newcomer Colin Farn taking 3rd place. Joel Partington was a clear winner of the U-13 category, winning all his four races, with first year rider Josh Gore taking 2nd place. Ben Dickenson took the U-16 title, with a 14 points haul, which was sufficient to put him in a run-off for 2nd place in the Open category, where he was beaten by Darek Kurkowski. Roy Heslop retained his Veterans title, whilst the overall winner of the Open category was Dariusz Pilas, who raced to an impressive 16 points maximum and recorded the fastest time of the night.

Edinburgh Fours - Round 3

Round 3 of the Edinburgh Fours took place at Redbraes today (21st Sep 2008). Any thoughts of an easy days racings were quickly dispelled from the off as some fast and furious racing, along with a couple of exclusions, took place on a well prepared track.

The 2nd match had Fours League Leaders Lothian facing a Glasgow side yet to post a win but who were ultimately made to fight all the way to the last heat to secure their overall win by one point and top place in the Fours league.
