NORTHERN LEAGUE INDIVIDUAL FINALS AT HULL. 3RD AUGUST 2008

The under 10's meeting was won in convincing style by Astley & Tyldesley's Adam Phillips with an unbeaten 16 point score. Team mate Adam Watson was runner-up with Stockport's Jack Sweeney in third.

Scorers: Adam Phillips (Astley & Tyldesley) 16, Adam Watson (Astley & Tyldesley) 12, Jack Sweeney 8, Stephen McKeown 4.

The under 13's attracted the largest field of the day, with heat 2 being decisive as Stockport's Jack Lush headed home brother Matt and Hull's Ben Swanborough. Heat 18 decided the top 3 as Ali Lam from Stockport was excluded for drifting Astley's Adam Phillips. In the re-run Ben Swanborough took advantage of a fall for Adam to clinch a run-off for second place. Meanwhile Jack Lush had amassed a healthy 19 points to clinch the title, before Matt Lush beat Ben Swanborough to take second overall with Ben third.

Scorers: Jack Lush (Stockport) 19, Matt Lush (Stockport) 19, Ben Swanborough (Hull) 18, Liam Burke (Bury) 16, Ali Lam (Stockport) 15, Adam Phillips (Astley & Tylldesley) 14, Jake Read (Stockport) 14, Adam South (Bury) 13, Georgina Healey (Stockport) 12, Chris South (Bury) 11.

Hull's Matt Beharrell confirmed his pre-meeting favouritism in the under 16's with an unbeaten 16 point score. Ben Higham from Stockport was second with Hull's Ben Swanborough in third.

Scorers: Matt Beharrell (Hull) 16, Ben Higham (Stockport) 12, Ben Swanborough (Hull) 8, Laura Watson (Astley & Tyldesley) 4.

The under 19's was also won with a maximum score, this time from Hull's Adam Stephenson. Team mate Matt Beharrell was second after a first heat fall, and Stockport's Ben Higham battled to a good third place.

Scorers: Adam Stephenson (Hull) 16, Matt Beharrell (Hull) 11, Ben Higham (Stockport) 9, Ben Swanborough (Stockport) 4.

The Hull track was holding up well to the racing and warm weather, if a little slippy on the top bend. The veteran's produced the most entertaining match of the day with Heckmondwike's Darren Kent retaining his title with an unbeaten 16 points. Hull's Paul Beharrell made a good pass on team mate Rich Pawson in heat 2. But in heat 6 was himself passed by fellow Hull rider Ian Swanborough as he was passing Edinburgh's Dave Baxter. Rich Pawson made a fine gate over Ian Swanborough in heat 9 but was unable to pass Edinburgh's Dave Baxter and Chic Mackie two heats later. In the run-off for second place Paul sat Ian out for two laps and then raced away for the win.

Scorers: Darren Kent (Heckmondwike) 16, Paul Beharrell (Hull) 14, Ian Swanborough (Hull) 14, Dave Baxter (Edinburgh) 13, Rich Pawson (Hull) 12, Chic Mackie (Edinburgh) 11, Mike Hack (Astley & Tyldesley)11

The entry for the senior event was very disappointing, but the five riders gave a fine display with the result always in doubt. Four Hull riders were joined by Bury's Neil Howarth, and it was home rider Corey Graham who took the honours in the first heat. Matt Beharrell was excluded as being the cause of the stoppage in heat 2, before Adam Stephenson stepped up his bid with a good win. Heat 3 saw Darren Spencer enter the frame with a win from Neil. Heat 4 was a first place for Corey while Matt was excluded for not leaving enough space on his inside. The final race saw Corey requiring a second place for the title, but he slipped on the first bend and trailed in last behind winner Neil with Darren unable to pass Matt to make the run-off. In the decider Corey gated over Neil but Adam came round them both to become the 2008 Northern Champion.

Scorers: Adam Stephenson (Hull) 11, Corey Graham (Hull) 11, Neil Howarth (Bury) 11, Darren Spencer (Hull) 10, Matt Beharrell (Hull) 5.

Wednesfield Aces v Great Blakenham

Before this fixture began after the opening parade of both teams on the centre green, yesterday's winner of the British Under 19's Chris Timms was introduced and did a lap of honour around the track in his winners jersey,

Racing got under way with a 5-5 in the first heat with Gt Blakenham's Adam Peck the winner followed home by Wednesfields Chris Timms & Chris Jewkes, heat 2 saw the Aces grab a 7-3 with the partnership of Terry Norman & Garry Pearce over James Studd & Alex Zielinski and it looked like the Aces might start to stamp their authority on the match from the start but that was short lived because in the next heat the Aces recieved two exclusions first British Champion Lee Aris for obstruction down the back straight and then in the re-run Mark Winwood for chopping across his opponent less than a bikes length in front resulting in a 0-7,

Gt Blakenham increased there lead further in the next heat with a 6-4 but then the Aces bounced back with a 7-3 with a cracker of a race between Jewkes and Peck with the lead chopping and changeing on every staight & bend with Chris Jewkes eventually wearing Peck down on the last lap and drifting him wide with Andy Franks tucking in underneath, the next four races upto the interval saw each side share 2 races 5-5 and a 6-4 either way with Gt Blakenham leading at the halfway stage by one point 43-44.

The start of the second half spelt disaster for the Aces as Lee Aris was excluded in heat ten for movement at the start tapes resulting in a 6-4 to Blakenham, to be fair the riders were all put under a bit of extra pressure by the fact that the start tapes were malfunctioning and were bouncing back down after they had been released and were catching the tops of some of the riders helmets and so the referee had been lineing up the riders a few inches back from the start tapes and clearly this was effecting some of the riders start's and on top of that there was the added distraction of noise from the nearby fair ground.

Wednesfield hit back in the next heat with a 6-4 from Terry Norman & Garry Pearce to narrow Blakenham's lead to 2 points only for the Aces to suffer another tapes exclusion in the next race this time Chris Jewkes being the victim of moving after hearing a noise the result was a 6-3 to Blakenham from Alex Zielinski and James Studd putting them 5 points in front and thats the way it remained until the final heat with six 5-5's.

Although the Aces did make a gallant last race effort to try to force a win with Terry Norman way out in front Blakenham new they could not loose the match as long as they finnished the race and did not get an exclusion but Aris was doing his best to try and force Peck or Brooke into a mistake but they were having none of it and then in the last lap he let them both through knowing the match was lost.

Premier League - Poole v Leicester

Images & Report: Graham Sutton
20080804_poole_leicester_1
Leicester maintained their top of the table position with a comprehensive victory over the South Coast club which was made easier by the absence of Southampton duo Gavin Wheeler and Tom Colling from the home line up. The visitors dominated the race wins with 15 of the 18 going their way while the home side gifted race wins to their opponants with four needless tapes exclusions.

Marcus Wadhams dropped his only point to Chris Roberts while Lukas Nowacki pulled off two gravity defying passes first on Aaron Lowey in the opening race and then on Artur Poprawski in heat 13 though fortunes were reversed when the two Polish stars clashed again in the final race. Dave Hemsley again showed his liking for the Baiter track dropping his only points to a tapes infringement in heat 12.

The track provided for quality racing out of the top drawer which entertained another healthy crowd who showed their full appreciation as the races unfolded. Poole were incensed by the late withdrawal of the two Southampton riders for a re-arranged SWL match and this undoubtedly affected the final scoreline. Leicester were jubilant with the two points as they overcame one of the biggest hurdles between them and the league title.

Poole 74 - Artur Poprawski 16, Aaron Lowey 10+2, Rich Clanfield 10, Thomas Reed 10, Chris Roberts 8, Karol Wlodarczyk 7+1, Ben Donohue 7+1, Chris Shylock 6.

Leicester 98 - Lukas Nowacki 18, Marcus Wadhams 16+3, Dave Hemsley 15+, Daniel Pike 13, Craig Marchant 12, Mark Newey 11, Mark Whitehead 6, Norman Venson 5.

Division 2 scoreline - Poole 53 Leicester 75

Poole scorers - Sam Hearn 10, Aaron Morgan 10, Matt Elston 9, Aidan Hedgecock 7, Jess Lamb 6, Kev Lowman 5, Luke Armes 4, Andre Cross 1.
