Leicester v Sheffield

Premier League

Report 1: This top of the league Premier League clash between Leicester and Sheffield lived up to its pre match billing of the match of the season. A large crowd witnessed this clash of the titans in brilliant sunshine and were entertained from the very first race, both teams new just how much was at stake and it showed in the passion injected into the racing.

Sheffield got off to a great start taking a 6-3 courtesy of Syzmanski & Angel over Waddhams & Pike after Pike was excluded for moving at the tapes, however by heat 3 Leicester had regained the advantage with a 7-2 from Marchant & Nowacki over the Star's Pawel Kozlowski after his team mate Mitchell Spear has been excluded for a tapes offence. A series of shared heats followed before Leicester moved ahead with a well taken 6-4 from Hemsley & Whithead, with one heat to go before the interval now was the perfect time for a Sheffield maximum and Kurkowski & Sieradzki were on hand to oblige which put the Star's one point up at the break, 43-44.

Unfortunately the interval seemed to upset the rhythm of the Sheffield team and quite quickly it became obvious that Leicester were taking control of the match, heat after heat the Leicester riders out gated their Sheffield counter parts and the Star's were continually playing catch up. This lead to a series of silly exclusions that just put more pressure on the Sheffield riders, Leicester were continually providing the heat winners through Waddhams, Hemsley, Nowacki, Pike and Marchant where as Sheffield were relying on Szymanski and Kurkowski for their wins.

By heat 16 the writing was on the wall and with the Stars 10 pts down you could see their was no way back, Leicester wrapped the match up with two more heat advantages to run out winners 94-79. After an excellent first half Sheffield seem to run out of steam and had no real answer to the superior gating of the home team.

Leicester now move to the top of the Premier League and Sheffield need Leicester to not only lose a match but have to keep a clean sheet themselves for the rest of the season, to tall an order - we will see.

Report 2: This top of the table clash had everything you may expect, exclusions, falls and loads of passion kept the healty crowd fully entertained. The Monarchs started poorly and through a series of errors went into the interval a single point down. The second half was a different matter though, helped by three exclusions to the visitors the home outfit gradually pulled away, a 7-2 from Wadhams/Pike over the lone Siederski opeing up a 6 point lead which they never looked like losing.

As expected Marcin Szymanski was top drawer with 3 race wins, the Sheffield problem was that the only other rider to take the chequered flag was Kurkowski on two occasions whilst Leicester had five riders capable of winning heats.

Referee Ian Sizer controlled the whole affair in a no nonense way, as you may expect both teams disagreed with decisions but from the stands he was always consistant and most notably he clamped down on slow riding very swiftly which contributed for better racing.

Leicester 94: Marcus Wadhams 19, Lukas Nowacki 18+1, Dave Hemsley 18, Daniel Pike 10+1, Craig Marchant 10+1, Mark Whitehead 10, Norman Venson 5+2, Kevin Burns 4

Sheffield 79: Marcin Syzmanski 18, Darek Kurkowski 17, Radek Sieradzki 13+2, Dariusz Pilas 10+2, Andy Angel 8+2, Pawel Kozlowski 7+1, Mitchell Spear 5, Ryan Hoyland 1

Bretford v Wednesfield

The meeting was good humoured with Wednesfield's more experienced riders finding the track a little tricky. One Wednesfield rider said "it's not about speed its about track craft."  Bretford's Mitch Barlow was the star of the day in his first ride he took Stuart Bentley wide for Lee Kemp to go in front and make sure Bretford got of to a fantastic start with a 7-3.

Andy Palmer for Wednesfield was their top scorer with 15 points he only lost to Mitch Barlow who out sprinted him in heat 11. Wayne Aris found the going tough in this meeting, he found the first corner extremely tough to get round, in his first ride he hit the front, took Joe Kemp wide, only for Joe Kemp to cut back after 2 laps and Joe to partner Rhys Thomas to another 7-3 victory.

Will Hanson and Fred Owen rode well all meeting, Will Hanson only 13 is gaining in confidence and put an excellent score of 14 points. Rhys Thomas and Joe Kemp worked well understanding that a drawn heat was not a bad result at times.  Brandon Kay reserve who has only rode 3 times took a win in heat 7 over Wayne Aris and Liam Johnson.

Bretford 74, Mitch BArlow 14 +2 BP, Lee Kemp 11, Fred Owen 9 +2 BP, Will Hanson 14 +1BP, Rhys Thomas 12 + 1BP, Joe Kemp 8 + 3BP, Brandon Kay 6
