Stoke 93 Hull 83 Northern League 22-6-08

Hull and Stoke clashed in a battle of the Northern Leagues two unbeaten teams at Compton Street. The match was raced on a dry track in very windy conditions, and Stoke drew first blood with a maximum in heat 3 for Leighton Bates / Erroll Thaw. Hull replied immediately with an Andy Angell / Ian Swanborough 6-4, but a heat 6 gate exclusion for Corey Graham allowed the home side to open up a 6 point gap. Again the visitors hit back with a 6-4, this time from Darren Spencer / Adam Stephenson; before a Lewis Bates / Richard Harrison 7-3 sent Stoke into a 10 point Interval lead.

Andy Franks was looking dangerous in the home sides reserve slot and teamed up for a maximum win with Erroll from the re-start. Darren Spencer was on top form for the visitors and raised the biggest cheer of the day for his heat 11 win over the impressive Lewis Bates / Richard Harrison pairing. Andy Angell / Lewis Aylmer then narrowed the lead with a 6-4, but 7-3's for Andy Franks paired with Lewis and Leighton Bates wrapped up the points for Stoke. Hull finished strongly with three heat wins, aided by an exclusion and a bike failure, to give the score a respectable look.

Stoke had a strong top 6 led by the unbeaten Andy Franks and were worthy winners. While Hull had Darren Spencer back to his best with good support fro Andy Angell, Corey Graham and the rest of the side who never gave up in a sporting match that was well refereed by Lance Bates.

Stoke: Leighton Bates 16+1, Simon Munden 16, Andy Franks 16, Lewis Bates 13+2, Erroll Thaw 12+3, Richard Harrison 9+2, Adam Ellis 6+1, Ant Ankers 4.
Hull: Andy Angell 16, Darren Spencer 14, Matt Beharrell 12+2, Corey Graham 12, Adam Stephenson 11, Lewis Aylmer 8+1, Andy Norrie 6, Ian Swanborough 4.

Hull kept up their unbeaten combination league campaign with a comfortable win over Stoke. The home side included two ineligible riders to give Hull a 28 point start, but the visitors managed a 3 point win without this assistance. Matt Beharrell and Lewis Aylmer led the way for a strong team display, while Lance Bates and Adam Ellis put in some good rides for Stoke.

Stoke: Richard Harrison 16, Simon Munden 12+4, Adam Ellis 9+2, Lance Bates 8+1, Matt Bailey 6, Ash Simpson 6, K. Williams 1.

Astley & Tyldesley Report

With several late withdrawals, it was very much a makeshift Astley & Tyldesley team that took to the track for Sunday's Northern League match against Heckmondwike at Gin Pit. On a very windy day, the visitors must have fancied their chances of winning at Gin Pit for the second successive year. However, A & T put in a great display of determination and teamwork to run out deserved winners, 76-69. Remi Burchardt won all his five races, whilst youngsters Luke Jamson and Adam Phillips put in some great rides to beat their older and more experienced opponents. Key to A & T's win was the experience and know how from brothers Mick and Andy Knowles, who along with veteran Mike Hack, scored vital points in decisive races. Heckmondwike had the top end strength, with Dave Murphy, Darren Kent and James Carter all scoring freely, with good support from Andy Bradshaw, but the lack of a sixth rider proved important. The absence of several Polish riders saw a reversal of usual match tactics, as it was A & T who packed the minor places in many races and took the heat wins in four key races.

Northern League match result

Astley & Tyldesley 76 Heckmondwike 69
A & T: Remi Burchardt 20 Mick Knowles 15 (1), Andy Knowles 12 (3), Mike Hack 11 (1), Luke Jamson 10, Adam Phillips 8 (1).
Heckmondwike: Dave Murphy 17 (1), James Carter 17 (1), Darren Kent 15 (2), Andy Bradshaw 13 (1), Richard Westcott 7 (1).
Referee - Gary Nuttall.
