Home International Report
From Edinburgh cycle Speedway Club
Although there was no track action for the Falcons last weekend there was no lack of cycle speedway interest as the 2008 Home International was staged at Great Blakenham on the outskirts of Ipswich.
Drawing similarities with the Scotland Football side, Scotland's Cycle Speedway Team Manager Gav Kennedy faced the prospect of his first match in charge minus several of his leading starts. Craig Newsome holidays, Mikey Hewitson broken scaphoid, Chris Shylock injured ankle, meant there was call ups for Falcons riders Neil McPherson and 15 year old Jake Slight, with the Team Manager also taking a place.
The Scotland Team found the going extremely tough and a distant last place was always going to be extremely hard to avoid. Top scorer for Scotland was the ever dependable Alan Smith and mention should go to young Jake Slight for grabbing an impressive 2nd place in his last outing.
Final Scores
2008 Home International at Great Blakenham, Suffolk
England 62 (Daniel Pike 16, Andy Angell 15, Nick Myhill 13, Ian Grange 12, Chris Osborne 6)
Wales 52 (Dave Murphy 13, Ryan Hughes 12, Mark Winwood 11, Dave Carmichael 10, Nigel Clarke 6)
Ireland 39 (Lee Cossey 13, David Martin 10, Tom Doyle 9, Gary Colby 5, Daniel Butler 2)
Scotland 26 (Alan Smith 7, Jake Slight 6, Neil McPherson 5, Richard Hunt 4, Gavin Kennedy 4)
Referee: Terry Ashford (Suffolk)
Next home match for the Falcons is 6th July v Astley & Tyldesley - tapes up at 2pm. There has also been a change to the Glasgow Olympique individual meeting which was originally pencilled in for 7th Sep. This will now be run on 17th Aug at Cathkin Park Glasgow. Start time is still to be agreed but we can guarantee that anyone interested in spectating will have plenty time to get to the Glasgow Tigers v Edinburgh Monarchs motor speedway match in Glasgow that afternoon.

Premier League: Poole v Sheffield
Report & Images: Graham Sutton
More image from this match at bottom of page
From the moment that Sheffield turned around a 6 - 4 reversal to a 7 - 3 advantage courtesy of World Champion Marcin Szymanski and man of the match Andy Angell in the opening race, the home side knew they were up against it in this top of the table clash. With a single point between the sides after 7 races, Szymanski once again played a crucial role in heat 8 as he drew the exclusion of Gavin Wheeler who tried valiantly to block his opponants' passing move but referee Colin Simmons ruled a 3 man re-start which gave the Stars a crucial 7 - 2.
Worse was to come for hosts in heat 11 when the race was controversially called back just when the Wheeler/Roberts pairing were on to a morale boosting 7 - 3. The re-start saw Roberts excluded for a first bend infringement and a complete nightmare in the third re-start as Wheeler sheared a pedal arm at the gate, gifting the Stars with an improbable 7- 0 and a 59 - 45 margin. Game over in terms of the results although Poole bounced back with two consecutive heat maximum wins from Chris Roberts and Richard Clanfield in heat 14 and a repeat from Tom Colling and Gavin Wheeler in the 15th.
Any hopes of a late home revival were dashed in heat 16 as Andy Angell withstood four laps of pressure from top Poole scorer Artur Poprawski to settle the Sheffield nerves with a scoreline of 81 - 73 with 2 heats remaining. Trying too hard to finish a disappointing day on a high note, Gavin Wheeler picked up a second exclusion in the final heat allowing the Stars to secure another maximum race and a final scoreline of 93 -80 which probably flattered them a little.
In terms of a spectacle, this was team racing of the very highest standard although the home side were a little disappointing with only those two late 7 - 3's to really excite local supporters. Szymanski turned in an imperious performance trailing Thomas Reed, Gavin Wheeler and Artur Poprawski in three heats but each time ending the victor. But in Andy Angell, the Stars had the man of the match taking four race wins on his first visit to the track and in this level of competition was a truely outstanding achievement by the Hull youngster. Word of praise too for match referee Colin Simmons who controlled a difficult match very well.

Premier League: Wednesfield v Norwich
Wednesfield Aces took full advantage of the fact that Norwich did not have their strongest squad of riders available for this premier match and from the start tghe Aces showed no mercy has they slammed in a 6-4 and three 7-3s in the first four heats with Chris jewkes, Lewis Bates, Terry Norman and Sam Smith all recording race wins,
by the halfway stage Wednesfield were leading by 20 points 55-35 after the interval the next nine heats were full of incidents with six exclusions and three of those coming in the last heat,
Heat eleven Lewis Bates was excluded after a perfect pass under Lee Grange but referre Mike Legg thought otherwise in heat twelve Richard Hunt wa\s excluded for obstruction After himself and Ian Grange sanwiched Chris Timms and brought him off, in heat 17 Lee Aris was excluded for moving at the start tapes the Aces were already 32 points up at this stage and it did not really matter, Then we had a most extraordinary final heat when first Lee Grange was excluded for taking his opponents racing line and then in the re-run Lewis Bates did the same thing in the next re-run Garry Pearce was excluded for moving at the start leaving just Lee Cossey to pick up the 4 race points
Must mention my rider of the match young Sam Smith (Wednesfield)with some great starts and passing!

Manchester League Grand Prix - 11 June 2008
Astley & Tyldesley hosted Round 4 of the Manchester League Grand Prix series at Gin Pit on Wednesday evening. There was another excellent turn-out of riders, with 45 riders appearing in 48 heats, which were completed in 2 hours. A well prepared track saw some fast times in the senior match, with A & T's Dariusz Pilas recording the fastest time of the season, 42.19 secs, when winning heat 3, which is less than 1 second outside Przemek Binkowski's five year old track record.
Pilas recorded a 16 points maximum in the Division 1 (senior) match, as A & T romped to their fourth successive victory in this series. A & T's Darek Kurkowski and Remi Burchardt both won races, with the only serious opposition coming from Stockport's former British Champion Terry Norman. Disappointingly, Bury failed to field a single rider. Dariusz Pilas now leads the Grand Prix series by a point, overhauling the earlier leader Remi Burchardt.
Manchester League Division 1 result (top 5 scorers count to team totals)
Astley & Tyldesley 55 Stockport 2006 17 Bury 0.
A & T: Dariusz Pilas 16, Darek Kurkowski 13, Remi Burchardt 11, Mick Knowles 9, Roy Heslop 6, Andy Knowles 5.
Stockport: Terry Norman 13, Chris Eaton 4.
Referee - Mike Hack (Astley & Tyldesley).
Stockport extended their lead in the Division 2 (junior) series, with a convincing win, whilst Bury pipped A & T for second place on the night. It was pleasing to see A & T fielding five riders who were making their first appearances in this competition, having progressed through the weekly training sessions and the early season North West Go-Ride Grand Prix series.
