South West Junior GP Finals Photos by Peter Soper on the Newport web-site >>>>
On a glorious autumn Saturday East Newport CSC staged the hotly contested South West Junior GP Finals for the first time. With lots of young riders making their track debut at the Welsh track the air had a pinch of excitement about it with tactics and advice being sought on the sensible racing lines to take. There were no losers on the day with all riders taking a memento home for the day with the South West League providing trophies for each rider. Huge thanks to all riders, clubs and parents for making a most memorable days racing.

Sandwell v Leicester (Midland League)
Both teams were down on strength but nevertheless this was a match full of good, close racing. The visitors tactics of settling for shared heats early on paid dividends later in the match as Sandwell ran out of tactical options. Phil Hemming celebrated his final home match of his long career with a couple of victories and his younger team mates were, as always, a handful around their own track. I'm sure that in the not too distant future Sandwell will reap the benefits of such a youth policy.
The Lions rode as a team, veteran Mick Skinner showing his ability around the smaller tracks whilst Nicky Whitehead and Carl Jarvis were paid for a total of 33 points but only won one race between them, figures that exemplefy the unselfish attitude and team spirit that has been the mainstay of this team during 2007.
Sandwell 82 (R Evans 16, P Heard 15)
Leicester Lions 96 (M Skinner 16+1, T Sensicall 15+2, N Whitehead 15+2)
CombinationThe visitors picked up the bonus point for fielding a seperate team but lost out by a single point on the day. Amy Crouch looked full of class in gaining her paid maximum but the home sides reserves Smith and Millward made the difference in the end.
Sandwell 65 (R Johnston 12)
Leicester 64 (A Crouch 19+1)
Midland Individual at Sandwell
Under 12's Championship: Wednesfield's Matt Haddock showed why he is so highly rated by so many Midland enthusiasts with a fine five ride unbeaten maximum, to win the championship, Runner-up Ricki Johnson pushed Matt hard when the two riders met in heat 8, but had to settle for second place, and finished second to the winner with 19 points in the final scores. Sheffield's Richard Hudson and Sandwell's Tyler Pearson needed a run-off to decide third, The Sheffield rider led from the start, with Tyler right behind him, but unable to find a way past the Sheffield lad, who took the third place trophy.
M.Haddock 20, Ricki Johnson 19, R. Hudson 17, T. Pearson 17, L. Kemp 16, J. Gabbitas 15, B. Clarke 14, J. Chattin 13, R. Simkins 12, P. Sangster 11, H. Grosvenor 9, R. Mansfield 9, D. Thomas 9, A. Williams 8, A. Bristow 6, O. Hobday 5. Referee Danny Hill (Sandwell).
Under 15's Championship: Carl Jarvis, Leicester's young star, won the Championship with a flying 20 point maximum, and he really had to fly with Sandwell's Paul Heard right behind him, and Coventry youngster Ben Sangster waiting for them to make a mistake. Paul's only defeat was in heat 12 to the Leicester star, and Ben's losing to both the top scorers and to the lad who nearly made the first three Sandwell's Matthew Smith in the first heat.
C. Jarvis 20, P. Heard 19, B. Sangster 17, J. Palmer 16, M. Smith 16, M. Barlow 15, S. Millward 14, C. Ellits 11, F. Owen 11, N. Pugh 11, M.Turley10, L.Baker 9, E. Simkins 9, J. Kemp 8, S. Barlow 6, J. Elston 5. Referee Mark Winwood (Birmingham).
Under 18's Championship: Sandwell's Tom Hibberd capped a great season by winning this championship, his only defeat coming at the hands of team-mate Paul Heard, with Lee Smith beating Dave Ball in a run-off for second and third place, it was a Sandwell 1,2,3. Lee Smith shot from the gate and Dave Ball stayed on his back wheel for four laps, but could find no way round the Netherton youngster. Tom Haddock (Wednesfield) and Mitchell Spear (Sheffield) both just missed out on a top three place with 16 points each.
T. Hibberd 19, L. Smith 17, D. Ball 17, T. Haddock 16, M. Spears 16, P. Heard 15, D. Pearce 14, J. Brown 13, C. Timms 12, D. Baker 10, N. Groves 10, R. Hoyland 10, J. Palmer 9, M. Smith 7, M. Pearson 7, L. Webb 6. Referee Mick Pedley (Wednesfield).
Open Championship: Surprise package of this championship was Veteran Paul Timms, who won his first two rides against younger riders, but slowly his age caught up with him and a fall in his fourth ride really put paid to any hopes of glory. Lee Aris showed why he is one of the top riders in the country at this time, with a super show to win the senior title, with a five ride 20 points maximum, right behind were Mitchell Spear (Sheffield) and Sandwell's own Russ Evans, who both tied on 17 points, and after a run-off Mitchell took the runners-up spot with Russ third. Birmingham's Marcus Waddams one of the favourites for the title before the start, finished with 15 points, and a last place in his fourth ride was one of the reasons why he missed out on a top three place.
