Programme Overview

Coaching is at the heart of cycling performance at every level from teaching basic bike handling skills in a school or club through to training athletes for the Olympic Games or Tour de France.  The coaching courses available from British Cycling will allow you to achieve your coaching goals; coaching at the level and in the discipline you want.

What is the British Cycling Coach Education Programme?

The British Cycling Coach Education Programme has been produced in conjunction with Sports Coach UK to improve the quality and consistency of cycling coaching at all levels and in all disciplines throughout the UK.  The course content has been developed in line with the UK Coaching Certificate (UKCC).  The programme currently consists of three levels of award, catering for basic skills for groups through to performance training for individual riders.

British Cycling Coaching Awards have been designed to:

  • Promote quality cycling coaching
  • Ensure best practice amongst coaches and teachers
  • Promote continuing professional development amongst coaches throughout their coaching career.

To ensure high quality and consistent delivery, all courses are delivered by trained British Cycling Coach Education Tutors, who have a wealth of cycling and coaching knowledge and expertise.  Support for coaches is also provided at a local level by a team of Regional Managers and Go-Ride Coaches.

The Coach Education Programme supports the delivery of the British Cycling Go-Ride programme, which encompasses club development, coaching activities, youth participation and talent identification programmes.

Why get involved with cycling coaching?

You may want to coach in order to:

  • Build a career
  • Give something back to cycling
  • Support the development of young people
  • Help your local community
  • Help a rider be successful
  • Gain new skills and experiences

Coaching and participation in sport can affect attitudes, lifestyles, physical development and confidence.  As a coach you can convert a child's interest in riding a bike for fun into a lifetime's enjoyment of recreational cycling or a successful competitive career.
