Activity Coach Award For Teachers (ACAT)

What are the benefits of becoming a Cycling Teacher?

The ACAT course is an ideal introduction to coaching cycling in schools for teachers.

  • Comprehensive resources to support the delivery of cycling coaching sessions.
  • Go-Ride Gears 1 to 4 workbooks with 55 different cycling activities (mapped to the National Curriculum Key Stage 2 and 3), ideal for delivery on playing fields, tennis courts, or larger gyms.
  • A certificate of attendance

After completing the ACAT course you can choose to upgrade to the Level 2 Coaching Award (Activity Coach) by completing a period of assessment. Becoming a Level 2 Activity Coach provides all the benefits of British Cycling Coach Licensing including £5 million professional indemnity insurance, technical support and a range of other training opportunities.

What will I learn?

The ACAT is a one-day coaching course based upon the successful British Cycling Level 2 Coaching Award (Activity Coach). During the course you will complete the following modules:

  • Introduction to Cycle Coaching
  • Cycling Equipment
  • Cycling Techniques *
  • Planning, Delivering and Evaluating Coaching Sessions
  • Developing Riders

For many teachers the 'Cycling Techniques' module is the highlight of the course. During this module you are given the opportunity to develop your own cycling skills by taking part in fun games, while coaching and being coached by other teachers on the course.

A small amount of pre-course reading is required before attending the course. The award does not involve any formal assessment unless you decide to upgrade to the Level 2 Coaching Award (Activity Coach).

Am I eligible to attend?

You don't have to be a PE teacher, have experience of cycling or even be able to ride a bike! You can attend the ACAT course if:

  • You have Qualified Teacher Status
  • You are enthusiastic about getting children active and want to develop cycling in your school

Do I need to bring anything to the course?

Coaches are required to supply their own bike and helmet for taking part in the 'Cycling Techniques' module.  Bikes used in the session should be in good working order and be capable of performing a range of basic skills (i.e. manoeuvring around cones). And have two working brakes.  Candidates do not need to be competent cyclists to take part in the activities.  If you are unable to take part in this session for any reason (e.g. illness, no bike or helmet) please inform Coaching and Education prior to the course so that alternative arrangements can be made to involve you in the activities.
