First Coaches Begin Level 3 Coaching Qualification

News Posted: 20 June 2008

Following the recent launch of British Cycling's new Level 3 cycling coaching qualifications, the first coaches completed the first core component of the qualification last weekend.

The course proved an outstanding success, with the coaches providing very positive feedback on the content and delivery of the programme, as well as the quality of the supporting resources:

'''The British Cycling Level 3 Handbook: Coaching for Performance' is an impressive and extremely useful resource''.

''The training prescription for coaching an individual rider is covered in such a way that gives me more confidence than when I did the Club Coach course''.

''Great course! I'm now looking forward to the discipline-specific unit''.

''Really enjoyed the course. Relaxed, friendly, and very informative''.

The unit was delivered by two British Cycling Coach Education Tutors, who are also leading experts in elite sports performance- exercise physiology specialist Professor Richard Davison and former British Cycling World Class Performance Programme coach Marshall Thomas.

The course has provided these coaches with a thorough foundation in coaching theory, in particular training theory; sports science; drug-free sport; performance analysis; coaching techniques; working with young riders; and planning, prescribing and evaluating individual coaching programmes that they will now apply to their chosen cycling discipline.

The new Level 3 Certificate in Coaching Track Cycling and Level 3 Certificate in Coaching Road and Time Trial Cycling are the latest additions to the continually expanding British Cycling Coach Education Programme. They are the first two of the six discipline-specific qualifications to be launched at Level 3, with BMX and Mountain Bike scheduled for launch in 2009, followed by Cyclo-Cross and Cycle Speedway in 2010.

British Cycling Coaching, Education and Development Director John Mills said: "The information that has been created through the development of these qualifications is truly world-leading. There are no other resources within the cycling world that cover the knowledge in such depth as is included in these qualifications."

The same unit will also be taught at a forthcoming session in Edmonton, London and is the last opportunity in 2008 for qualified Club Coaches to embark on their Level 3 pathway. Therefore, anyone who wishes to attend either the Level 3 'Track' or the Level 3 'Road and Time Trial' Units later in the year are encouraged to book now.

Don't forget that if you are a coach within a Go-Ride club, you will be able to access a subsidy on your Coach Education course fee. For places booked before 31st December 2008, Go-Ride Clubs will be eligible for the following discounts:
