Level 1 Certificate in Coaching Cycling

 

Coaching_Resource_Cover_-_L1_The Level 1 Certificate in Coaching Cycling (L1CCC) is the new entry-level award into the British Cycling Coach Education Programme, aimed at people new to coaching and cycling. This new qualification provides you with an introduction to the principles of safe, ethical and effective management and coaching of cycling sessions. The certificate qualifies you to independently prepare for, deliver and review pre-prepared coaching sessions to groups of adults or children.  The course covers all of the basics of cycle coaching and qualifies coaches to deliver British Cycling Go-Ride Gears 1 and 2 activities.

Level 1 coaches can use a variety of environments to deliver cycling activities such as; playing fields, tennis courts and car parks or even large indoor gymnasiums.

 

 

What will I learn?

 

This is a 2-day course, with about four weeks between days 1 and 2.  The course covers a wide variety of modules that will assist you to begin coaching:

 

Day 1:

  • Introduction
  • Cycling Equipment & Riding Position
  • Cycling Safety
  • Cycling Techniques
  • Assessing and Improving Rider Performance
  • Preparing and Delivering Cycling Sessions

 

Day 2:

  • Reviewing Coaching Sessions
  • Coaching Children
  • Good Coaching Practice

 

 

A large portion of the course is made up of practical activities, to help you learn through experience.  You will have an opportunity to deliver cycling techniques to other participants on the course using a variety of fun games to develop each other's knowledge of what to coach and how to coach.

 

 

 

Am I eligible to attend?

 

Yes, you can attend the Level 1 course if:

  • You are at least 16 years of age
  • You have a minimum of an Appointed Persons First Aid certificate
  • You have an appropriate level of coaching insurance that provides at least the same level of cover as that provided by British Cycling membership (gold or silver)
  • You hold a valid enhanced CRB check, British Cycling will undertake a check on your behalf

Do I need to bring anything to the course?

 

Coaches are required to supply their own bike and helmet for taking part in the 'Cycling Techniques' module.  Bikes used in the session should be in good working order and be capable of performing a range of basic skills (i.e. manoeuvring around cones). And have two working brakes.  Candidates do not need to be competent cyclists to take part in the activities.  If you are unable to take part in this session for any reason (e.g. illness, no bike or helmet) please inform Coaching and Education prior to the course so that alternative arrangements can be made to involve you in the activities.
