Go-Ride for Schools
There are two main ways your school can get involved in Go-Ride and offer cycling coaching sessions – by becoming a Go-Ride School Club or through the P.E., School Sports and Club Links (PESSCL) programme.
All you need to take part in Go-Ride is a flat area (approximately 40m by 80m) on which the coaching activities can be delivered. Both schemes involve linking with a local Go-Ride Community Club.
Linking with a Go-Ride club can benefit your school by:
• Providing appropriate opportunities for further development and participation for those young people who may be interested.
• Helping in the running of your schools’ out-of-hours programmes.
• Bringing cycling to a wider range of young people.
• Meeting aspects of ‘Every Child Matters’ and ‘Healthy Schools’ agendas.
• Helping to arrange competition officials for major school events.
• Optimising the provision of coaching expertise and leadership in cycling at school level.
Go-Ride School Club
Go-Ride School Clubs are all about getting more young people into cycling. These clubs provide high quality coaching activities, delivered in a traffic-free environment. Each School Club must have a British Cycling qualified Coach to run the coaching sessions. This can either be an external British Cycling qualified Coach (e.g. from a local community club), or a Qualified Teacher who has attended one of British Cycling’s coaching courses. The sessions can be run as either an after-school club, or during P.E. lessons as part of the curriculum.
As a Go-Ride School Club, you will be provided with Go-Ride Gears Workbooks, which outline various activities and skills tests relevant to the ability of the group in question. The Go-Ride Gears Workbooks go from Gears 1 to 7 with a continually progressive level of difficulty. Each Go-Ride Gears activity can be adjusted to make it easier or harder, depending on the ability of the children present. As such, your school will be able to choose from over one hundred different activities, ensuring that sessions never get boring or repetitive.
PE, School Sport and Club Links (PESSCL) Programme
PESSCL involves a British Cycling Regional Go-Ride Coach, supported by coaches from local Go-Ride Community Clubs, visiting your school and delivering structured coaching sessions aimed at the age group participating. This is the first step in creating a long-term, sustainable link between your school and a local Go-Ride club. The PESSCL programme is designed to offer your school an introduction to cycling and Go-Ride, with the long-term goal of helping your school in becoming a Go-Ride school club with strong links to a local Go-Ride community club.
The scheme delivers high quality coaching activities in schools, giving children a taste of what Go-Ride clubs have to offer and introducing young people to local, effective, child-friendly clubs where they can take their interests further. Each school will be visited for 4 full days, each day comprising of a half-day of coaching for two different classes.
British Cycling provides all of the necessary resources and equipment to ensure that the day runs safely and smoothly. The school incurs no cost, since Sport England, Tesco, Sportsmatch and Trek have provided the necessary funds to supply bikes, helmets and pay the coaches to deliver the programme.
We are also very keen to ensure that the activities are sustainable and are pleased to offer one teacher, from every participating school, the opportunity of attending a free 1-day training course so that the school can continue to offer coaching activities beyond the PESSCL programme by becoming a Go-Ride school club.
Go-Ride, Cycling Proficiency, and Bikeablity
British Cycling is currently working on a programme to teach the necessary skills young people will need to be safer cyclists on busy roads.
Cycling
Level 1 - Basic skills delivered in a traffic free environment (i.e. Go Ride Gears 1 -4)
Level 2- Basic road skills on quiet roads
Level 3- Advanced road skills on busier roads
