Merseyside Go-Ride Club Liverpool Mercury today celebrated their first school club link with Cardinal Heenan Catholic Sports College in the city's West Derby suburb. The school club link, the first of it's kind in Liverpool for a cycling club, was celebrated with a get together of students, staff, club members, sports development officers and members of British Cycling's Go-Ride club development department.

Liverpool Mercury has a long history of cycling success and now, as a Go-Ride club, is building a solid and sustainable future. The club is now based at the Litherland Sports Park cycle circuit and has recently gained sponsorship from local custom bike builder Dolan. With the fostering of a school-club link with Cardinal Heenan, the club hope to attract more young people into the club and offer pupils coaching and competition opportunities beyond the curriculum. The school itself now has two teachers who have gained British Cycling's Activity Coach Award for Teachers, enabling them to coach Go-Ride sessions withing the school environment.

Cardinal Heenan is no stranger to producing sporting talent, with numerous pupils currently playing at a high level in rugby, boxing and football, most notably a certain Liverpool midfielder, Steven Gerrard. With this link between Liverpool Mercury and a specialist sports college with a great pedigree, it is hoped that between them they can find and nurture the next generation of Liverpool cycling talent.
