Go-Ride Games At Halesowen Attract 21 New Riders
News Posted 21st September 2008
At 10 o’clock on a warm Sunday morning , Chinese music was drifting over Halesowen Cycle Track. Forty-Two young people and their parents came together for a Go-Ride cycling session with the Go-Ride Clubmark Accredited Club Halesowen A & CC to celebrate the Beijing Games. Of the 42 participants 21 were members of the Junior section of the club – The Halesowen Freewheelers and 21 young people new to the club and to the sport.
All the 42 young people participated in cycling events reflecting the races held in the Loashan Velodrome. The Olympiad organisers were the Freewheeler’s coaches, Mr. Brian Smart Adrian Lord and David Fieven. The young people selected the countries they wanted to represent and the medal table began to take shape.
Much like the Games in Beijing the first competitors to shine were the girls. Here the Freewheelers under 8’s tackled a time trial before the under 10’s and 12’s took on their own challenging race against the clock.
After setting up the day’s racing with the time trial the riders were all closely matched and after a short break they turned to a 2, 4 and 6 lap scratch race for the 3 age groups respectively. The racing never stopped with a “Devil Take the Hindmost” race.
Not to be outdone by the young stars of the future the parents joined in by providing Chinese dishes for after the racing so that at these young people coaching sessions everyone got involved and created a Beijing Olympic atmosphere.
Below is a selection of pictures from the day’s racing and all the new riders were invited to the regular coaching sessions held at the tracks on Tuesdays and Thursdays. All involved got their T-Shirts and conducted a lap of honour to conclude a successful day for the young people, parents and coaches.
