Go-Ride Coaching With Former Olympian And National Sprint Champion Mark Barry
Update 29th August 2008
Thirty riders aged from 10 to 15 took the opportunity for some track coaching and a great day of racing with a former Olympian at Scunthorpe Velodrome. The track coaching day was organised by the British Cycling Yorkshire Board under the management of Peter Root the Area Manager. The fact that it had been organised deep in Yorkshire at the Quibell Park track didn’t discourage riders from other areas, in fact riders travelled up to a hundred miles from as far afield as Bolton, Gateshead and Spalding to attend the all day event!
The day started with group riding skills that progressed to full Madison riding by the end of the day. As well as bunch skills the intrepid riders tested their metal at a few sprint events!
The lunch break is often a tricky time for organisers because the youngsters on the scheme often only stop long enough to eat their lunch before stating that they’re ready to continue despite their stomachs being full of food. No such worries at this camp because during the lunch break riders were treated to videos of Keirin and Madison racing projected onto the canteen wall.
Local rider 13 year old Callum Rogers stated that he was delighted in the opportunity to do things not usually possible in normal club training and racing, whilst 11 year old Struan McInnes from South Yorkshire, riding a hire bike for the day, actually called his Dad during the afternoon to ask him for a track bike – good luck with that Struan!
Coaches Mark Wilcox and former Olympian Mark Barry were delighted with the energy and commitment showed by all the riders and has encouraged the organisers to plan further events for next year.
