Sutton Cycling Club / Der Ver Cycles Have Wheels Of Steel
News Posted: 9th June 2008
Sutton Cycling Club/De Ver Cycles took a break from their Go-Ride activities on the 18th May and raised money for the Children’s Trust in Tadworth by taking part in the Wheels Of Steel charity event. The Children’s Trust provides care, education and therapy for children with multiple disabilities.
The money raised will be used to help young people overcome disabilities to enjoy life and an excellent example of this is the case of Alfie who had an unfortunate accident while riding his bike that limited his ability to walk, talk and feed himself after coming out of a 72 hour coma. However the Children’s Trust at Tadworth helped him regain his speech, memory and movement culminating in Alfie winning a gold medal at the Special Olympics 400m relay event. Remarkably for someone told they wouldn’t walk again Alfie ran the London Marathon in 4hours 40 minutes to raise money for the trust.
Sutton CC/De Ver Cycles did their bit with over 30 riders taking part in the day’s events. First up was a group of four young members comprising, Jack Haining, Jake Martin, Will Sinclair, Matt and Dan Godden. They were accompanied by their parents John Godden and Brian Haining on a 40 mile road ride that was lead by club coach Peter Fordham.
Two families wanting to contribute to the fundraising did the 10 mile family challenge. Lewis Heritage and Georgia Degg were the two keen young riders joined by their families.
The biggest contingent of club riders with nine youngsters (Toby Cook, Connie & Harvey Godden, Max
Haining, Chris & Mathew McGovern, Ben Scott, Jack Wills and Aiden Woolven) and six adults (Gavin Cook, Catherine Mahe, Julian McGovern, Dave Wills, Yvonne and Nick Woolven) participated in the nine mile “family fun-off” ride completing it in a very respectable time despite the challenge not being a competitive event. The various different events meant that everyone in the club had an opportunity to contribute and make a difference.
The money raised will benefit young people with disabilities in the south east massively and the club thanks all involved.
