Go-Ride Club's Inter Club Events take Off In The South East
News Posted 15th July 2008
Back in May the Go-Ride Team reported that Go-Ride Clubs in the South East were uniting to deliver a race series for young people to enjoy their racing. Now as we head into the middle of July VC Jubilee have being in contact again and provided a race report for the latest instalment of the series.
“The evening’s racing got off to a great start with 28 riders from 5 Go-Ride Clubs from across the South East, taking to the start line in their respective youth categories. Clubs represented were the promoting club VC Jubilee youth development along with Preston Park Youth Cycling Club, Sutton Cycling Club, Team Darenth and In-Gear development squad.
The u8, u10, u12 all had separate events, and the u14, u16 and Juniors rode together with a staggered start and distances, just to keep the judges on their toes! The 1km (approx) loop with some technical descending, cornering and a climb makes this event quite a toughie. With the recent coverage of the Tour de France and Olympic preparations in peoples minds, good healthy racing tactics, sprints, climbs could all be seen and were captured by Ant Bliss Photography (see and order your race photos: www.sussexsportphotography.com some great pictures many taken at amazing angles!).
First off were the younger racers and the riders that were on form taking the win were Cory Anderson (Preston Park Youth U8), Douglas McCauley (Preston Park Youth U10), Gabriel Parle (Preston Park Youth U12). Notable rides that pushed the winners to the max came from Megan Lewis (VC Jubilee, U8), Tom Martin (Preston Park U8) Ted O’Brien, Joe Hill ( Preston Park Youth U10), Sam Titmarsh (Team Darenth U12) and Harris Redgrave (VC Jubilee U12). These riders all made the race and perhaps as the inter club events progress over the coming years these riders might form friendly rivalries like the famous match up between Chris Boardman and Graeme Obree.
Next off was the older riders and they tackled the technical course at fast speeds with Ashley Dennis (VC Jubilee U14), Charlie Heffernan (VC Jubilee U16), Adam Gent (In-Gear, Junior) taking the wins in the older categories. The girls taking the win in their categories were Megan Lewis (VC Jubilee, U8) and Amy Jacobs (VC Jubilee, U14).
Credit must go to a few first time racers: Nicholas Wickens and Tom Martin (PPYCC) and Sam Tulley (VC Jubilee) who fully deserve congratulations on their riding techniques and determination on this technical circuit. Also credit to Lee Smith (PPYCC) who punctured in the Juniors and managed to get back to the start fit another wheel just as the group came back around so he could jump in again (being allowed a lap out). Finally to superfast Charlie Heffernan (VC Jubilee), who actually finished in front of the Juniors too, to win his own u16 category!
Roy Page (British Cycling South East Regional Manager) was on hand to present the Regional Go-Ride Interclub medals to the winning boy and girl riders in each age category.
Many thanks to Brighton Excelsior CC members and VC Jubilee parents for marshalling/judging, PPYCC coaches for gear-checking, young volunteer Daniel Gerrey for sign on, and Dave Gerry for judging/results, Rob Fuller for Commissaire and Ant Bliss for excellent photography.
Don’t forget the next Youth/Junior Hove Park event is on 12th September, promoted by PYCC (combined with their 2-day) www.ppycc.org.uk
Well done to all the riders! We hope to see some of you in future Olympics, Tours etc J
