St. Catherine's RC Primary School has been promoting a “Bike To School” Week and the week began with the grand opening of secure parking facilities for the pupils bikes. Many people may not blink an eye at the subtle changes to a schools appearance that some new Kryptonite parking hoops may bring. There is no doubt that they will make a significant difference to the lives of pupils and staff at St. Catherine's RC Primary School.
The new parking hoops were opened by the Children, Schools and Families Minister Kevin Brennan MP. Thanks to the hard work of Carlton Reid, member of local club Newcastle Phoenix, who runs a successful after school cycle club linked to the Go-Ride community club. John Brennan MP was aware of the hard work of all the people at the school and paid a visit to commend them on the progress they have made. For example, Carlton Reid organised Bikeability training and Go-Ride activities for the young people.
The activities clearly demonstrated how much fun and enjoyment can be had on a bike.
The pupils of St. Catherine's RC Primary School weren’t the only ones who caught the attention of the MP as the staff demonstrated how cycling was influencing their way of working by showing off their new bikes bought via the help of the Government’s “Cycle to Work” salary sacrifice scheme.
The North East Go-Ride Coach Jon Bateman delivered the Go-Ride session to the young people, this is what he said about the day:
“There is an excellent after school club here and the MP has seen some excellent activities and how they are linked to the local Go-Ride club Newcastle Phoenix. The school even has that extra factor as some of the children are part of a unicycling club!”
St. Catherine’s RC Primary School of Newcastle upon Tyne has over 240 pupils and the new Kryptonite parking hoops will help support the schools cycling activities in the future.
