VC Jubilee Volunteers Receive Awards

News posted 6th December 2007

British Cycling recognises the invaluable contribution that dedicated volunteers provide ensuring that people engaging in cycling activities all round the country have the best possible experience when riding their bike from the casual Sunday club ride to organised coaching and racing for young people. It gives us even more joy when other organisations recognise their achievements and this has been the case with several young people at VC Jubilee.

Pete Mitchell has been recognised for his hard work within the Olympic Development programme. At 17 years of age Pete is a bright prospect for the future and the BBC recognised his achievements on the European and World stage in 2007. Pete won European and World titles in Track Cycling Spring Disciplines and this earned him the BBC South East Young Sportsman of the Year Award. He also received a commendation along with a contemporary from sailing at the Sussex Sport Awards but however was pipped to the top award by another deserving winner; Oliver Everest from Judo.

VC Jubilee were prominent at the Sussex Sports Awards with Ben Miller and Daniel Gerrey also recognised for their hard work. Ben gained a special acknowledgement from the judging panel in the University OF Brighton Young Coach of the Year Award. This is a remarkable achievement for the 17 year old who was awarded his British Cycling level 1 Coaching Certificate in August 2007. Ben gained the special acknowledgement thanks to his involvement in VC Jubilee’s vast Go-Ride coaching activities where Ben could utilise the opportunity to coach cycling on Wednesday evenings and Saturday mornings. The young people also have the opportunity to compete in local races and use the expertise learned thanks to the help of Ben.

A high commendation was reserved for Daniel Gerrey whom after 2 20071205VC2_JUB_200years of racing himself at Preston Park has been committed to supporting the venues track league. Daniel fulfils the roles of judge and official utilising his excellent reactions and speed to ensure fast, safe, racing with accurate results.  This is alongside the performance of more arduous activities such as sweeping the track and removing any potential dangers ensuring safe riding for the participants. Daniel is an example of how VC jubilee has continued to develop and adapt its activities for young people with recent, unique projects including the making of a DVD detailing the clubs activities which has been completely led by young people at the club such as Ben and Daniel, from the initial stage of applying for funding through to filming and editing of the show.
