A Cornish club is celebrating the opening of a brand new BMX & 4X Racing Track: after 12 months of hard work and a lot of money and rain, Duchy Pirates BMX &4X Racing Club can now finally say they are ready to ride.
The South West's newest club formed back in June 2007. Combining years of racing experience with the experience of dirt jump builders they have produced an exciting new track.
The Track started off back in 2003 as bit of fun for Steven Tonkin and his friends, who were keen to have fun on their bikes, when Steve realised there were hundreds of like minded people out there keen to have a new place to ride he got to work and after 18 months of wearing a suit, doing presentations and speeches for local councillors he finally got permission to change the use of the land and build his dream bike park.
Over the last 3 years there's been a lot of hard work, machinery and earth moving, but Duchy Pirates and The Track can now proudly say they not only a great new race track, but a cafe, viewing areas, toilets, car park and camping field, not to mention foam pit, resi ramp and over one mile of dirt jumps and trails.
The club are expecting the new track to cause quite a bit of debate over the coming months with it modern design, which will challenge some and excite most. Club Vice Chairman Martyn Wetherelt says "Our new track is awesome, it's got some really great jumps and anyone who says it's not suitable for beginners should come watch our really young un' s, they love it"
Duchy Pirates would like to thank some local businesses for their donations and support, Property Care, Brandon Tool Hire, Bradfords Building Supplies and Andrews Steel Merchants, also Kerrier Leisure for the purchase of our electronic gate system.
Riders consist of a wide variety, from under six to over forty, males and females alike, the club can also boast two star riders Will Evans who is 25 years old and just been selected for the GB 4X team, we also have training with us Ben Clarkson 14 years old and currently on the Olympic talent team, a young hopeful future Olympian and already an accomplished National standard rider.
The Duchy Pirates are always looking for new riders, they train on a Monday 6.30pm - 9pm, £4 non members £3 Members, when they have use of the whole site and Wednesday evening 6.30pm - 9pm, £3 non members £2 Members, when they do Practice gates and mini moto comps.
On Sunday 10th August Duchy Pirates will be hosting their first Regional BMX Race and to start the day off Julia Goldsworthy our local MP (you may have seen on Channel 4's The Games back in 2006) will be officially opening the BMX track for them.
