East Kent BMX Club Meet

30th November 2008
Report: Alan Humphrey
Pictures: Alan Humphrey and Olly Small

A hardy gathering of riders descended upon the track in Broomfield despite it being overcast, slightly windy and very cold for this, the first of three meetings during the winter months. As there were only twenty-one riders the classes were split into 8 & Unders, 9 - 12's and 17+, there being no-one in the 13 - 16 age group. What they lacked in numbers, they made up for in enthusiasm and effort during the three motos and finals. Big Daddy Martin Baxter was on the mic and the stage was set for the first race.

In the 8 and Under group it was Josh Werner who won two motos whilst Bradley Torrence battled on with his 16" pit-bike to win the other moto and secure victory in the final, thereby gaining overall victory. As the group was run as a Grand Prix it was Bradley first with Oscar Wrench in second and Josh Werner and Ben Hodgson equal third. For his efforts Oscar Wrench was awarded the Rider of the Day trophy.

In the 9 - 12 year olds Owen Baxter was undefeated although Ethan Godden and Joel Lockhart chased him hard all day and the wins didn't come too easy with the younger riders pursuing him fast.

Twelve riders competed in 17+ with Roy Binks taking three moto wins, Tibbs Cycles/Haro sponsored rider Dan Pullen netting two of his motos whilst Jez Pearce took the other. Gary Godden and Justin Esson were riding particularly well throughout the motos on their cruisers. The B Final was a fine win for Dialled Bikes' Mike Wong and so to the final race of the day as the big guns of 17+ lined up on the gate. Justin Esson was looking sharp rounding the first berm and then it all went wrong as Dan Pullen caught Roy Binks - akin to hitting a brick wall as Roy just doesn't budge an inch!! Dan went down collecting Justin and also Jez Pearce leaving the door wide open for Gary Godden to wind in Binks and to overhaul him in a dash to the finish. And so it was that Godden won, with Binks in second and Cycle Life's Simon Barnes collecting third place.
