Second Senior BMX World Title For Reade

Tiayuan, China - May 28 - June 1 2008

 

Britain's Shanaze Reade has successfully defended her Elite women's World BMX title in Tiayuan, China. In the final she repeated her awesome destruction of the field last year with another jaw-dropping display of power and precision, blasting clear down the first straight and then controlling the race from the front as the other riders, with the notable exception of former Downhill star, Frenchwoman Anne Caroline Chausson, struggled to stay on the same straight.

 

Chausson fought for all she is worth and perhaps even closed the gap on Reade in the final straight, but the margin of the win was still very emphatic with Reade clearly cruising for most of the latter half of the race. New Zealander Sarah Walker was third. Earlier, Reade was just as in control of her Quarter and Semi-Final races. GB's other rider Joey Gough was eliminated in the Semi Finals.

The Men's title has gone to Maris Strombergs of Latvia, with Steven Cisar of the USA and Sifiso Nhlapo of South Africa taking the Bronze. Britain's Kelvin Batey went out in the fourth Quarter final, where he finished 7th. Other winners included Sam Willoughby of Australia who took the Junior Men's title; Manon Valentino of France who took the Junior Women's race.

 

Other Results

Earlier in the Championships, former world elite champion Dale Holmes showed typical competitiveness in claiming the Elite Masters title. GB also claimed second and third in the 30 & Over Men's event, with Tony Fleming and Andy Shaw.  On Sunday, Dale Holmes bagged another title in 35-39 Cruiser and Tony Fleming did equally well by claiming gold in 40-44 Cruiser.
