Royston Rockets BMX National Series Race Report
Round 4 and 5, Mansfield
17th - 18th May 2008
Main Report, Results and Images: Rounds 4 & 5
The 4th and 5th rounds of the BMX Racing National Summer Season were held at the Mansfield BMX Clubs track last Sunday. With practice and racing in round 4 on Saturday and on Sunday racing in round 5 it was an action packed weekend. Almost 400 riders took part, with 12 of them from the Royston BMX Club. The weather was cold but mostly dry for Saturday and just chilly on Sunday.
The Royston Rockets BMX Racing Club involvement started with the youngest member, Kelly Newall in the 6 and under class who failed to qualify through Saturday's semi-final but rode his socks off on Sunday to take 8th in the class A final, whilst Josh Peters and Ted Dalleywater were competing in the 7 year class where Josh took a 5th on both days and Ted was rewarded with 8th and 6th place in the A Finals. Riding on Sunday, Marmaduke Birt just failed to make the semi finals.
In the 8 year class, Royston's Ethan Vernon took second in the A finals on both days and in the 9 year class, Bradan Blanche had a variable weekend with 8th in Saturday's B final but was unable to make it through to the finals on Sunday. Aaron Dalleywater made the main final on both days with 5th and 6th towards his series rankings whilst in the 11-12 year class James Handleigh took a fall in the A final on Saturday to finish in 8th and on Sunday he bounced back to finish in 3rd. In the 19+ men's class, Jonathan Roberts took 6th and 7th in the B final of one of the biggest classes at the event and in Junior Female, Katie Roberts showed that consistent training is not wasted as she took home 5th and 3rd places in the A finals. On the Sunday, Dave Godfrey started his season off with a 3rd in the A Final and in the Elite class more success came Royston's way with Laurence Mapp taking 2nd and 3rd in the main final to start the defence of his national title.
The next event on the race calendar is the third round of the Regional Summer Series, hosted by the Braintree BMX Club on May 25th and the following weekend, June 1st, the rearranged Spring Classic event - originally set for April but cancelled due to the snow - will be hosted by the Royston club at their home track in Burns Road, where the Rockets will be out in force with the day starting off at 10-00am, rider registration closing at 11-00am and racing from 1-00pm until about 4-30pm.
The clubs own Summer Series starts this month with their regular Tuesday night sessions at the clubs track in Burns Road, Royston.
