Race Report: Royston Rockets

Last Sunday eighteen members of the Royston Rockets BMX Racing Club travelled to Ipswich for the fifth round of the East Anglian Winter Series. The heavy overnight rains did not delay racing and the track held up well, if a little sticky in places, for the riders who had travelled from across the region for the days racing.

The youngest riders ride in the Formula 5 class and are nominally 7 years and under and Royston's Ted Dalleywater took a fine A final win ahead of team mates Marmaduke Birt in 3rd and James King in 7th whilst in the class B final Loui Foreman took the win just ahead of Archie Yorke in 2nd. Royston had 5 riders in Formula 4 which is based on 8-10 year olds with Bradan Blanche taking a hard earned 2nd place in the A final ahead of Zak Foreman in 3rd, Daniel Blanche in 5th and Josh Peters in 7th and in the B final Matthew Harris took 3rd.

Aaron Dalleywater took a good 2nd with Ethan Vernon 8th in the A final of Formula 3 (11-13years) and with no Royston riders in Formula 2 (14-16 year old riders) as they had all moved up a class the final class on the track was Formula 1 for rider over 17 years old. Royston had six representatives in the largest and fastest class of the day and with some incidents in the semi finals the qualifying riders for the finals had an unexpected combination.

The A final saw Lee Alexander take 3rd just inches ahead of team mate Richard Townsend in 4th and Katie Roberts giving the boys a good run as she finished in 8th whilst in the B final Jonathan Roberts took 3rd with Darren Foreman in 7th and the youngest rider in the class by a number of years, James Handleigh taking 8th.

This was the fifth round of the series which is running throughout the winter months, the final round being at Peterborough on March 16th. The Rockets are hosting the East Anglia Spring Classic at their track in Burns Road on April 6th which is the traditional first event of the summer season and is likely to attract well over 100 riders from around the region. Full details of forthcoming club and regional events are published on the club web site at www.roystonrockets.co.uk or ring 01763 260959 for more information on BMX racing.
