2008 Scottish Cycling Awards

The spotlight was firmly on Scottish Cycling last Saturday (29 November) when the 28 winners of the 2008 Scottish Cycling Awards - supported by ScottishPower Renewables - were announced at a glittering awards ceremony and annual presentation dinner at The Royal Hotel in Bridge of Allan. Topping off an unforgettable year in Scottish Cycling, the Gold Badge of Honour was awarded to five individuals who have demonstrated outstanding results and support for Scottish Cycling.

This year, the Gold Badge of Honour was presented to Graeme Herd who led the Scottish team to unprecedented medal success as National Coach for Scottish Cycling; Ross Edgar in recognition of his Commonwealth and Olympic medal success In Melbourne in 2006 and this year in Beijing; Aileen McGlynn and tandem pilot Ellen Hunter in recognition of their World Championship and Paralympic success and Isobel Smith, Club and Centre Secretary of GS Corsa and Aberdeenshire for over 55 years dedication to cycling.

The other 2008 winners across the following award categories included:

These awards recognise the New National Road Race Series winners across all categories.

Junior Winner B - Dougie Young, Stirling
Masters 40+ - Jim Cusick, Glasgow
Masters 50+ - Bob Soutar, Peebles
Masters 60+ - George Findlater, Elgin

These awards recognise Scotland's best Time Trial riders. Steeped in tradition, Time Trialling is the true test of rider and machine against the clock. Listed below is first, second and third place for each category.

Young Volunteer of the Year - Nicola Harrison, Peebles
Event Official of the Year - Stuart Gillie, Peebles
Club of the Year - Peebles
Volunteer of the Year - Bill Ross, Glasgow

Created by Scottish Cycling and now in their second year, the Scottish Cycling Awards showcase the cream of competitive cycling talent and recognise those individuals who contribute to the development and success of Scottish Cycling. Jackie Davidson, Chief Executive of Scottish Cycling, commented: "Scotland has a wealth of cycling talent and it?s fantastic to have an opportunity to celebrate this. 2008 has really been an amazing year and we are looking forward to building on this success in the years ahead."
