Cyclists Awarded for Achievements in 2007

In the last few weeks, many in cycling in Britain have been rewarded for their achievements in 2007. Here is a index page to those sent to British Cycling.

Two men central to the re-invention of cycle sport in this country have been honoured in the 2008 New Year’s Honours List. British Cycling’s President Brian Cookson has been awarded the OBE, whilst Doug Dailey, Logistics Manager for British Cycling GB Cycling Team, has received the MBE.

Members of the SJA have voted cyclist Victoria Pendleton their Sportswoman of the Year with the presentation of the trophy in London in front of a star studded assembly of sportsmen and sportswomen and journalists from national and regional newspapers, TV and radio. Victoria shared the top honours with motor racing's Louis Hamilton who won the SJA Sportsman of the Year Award.

Joining a long line of Sprinters from the Great Britain Cycling team, Olympic Academy rider and World Champion two years running David Daniell has been selected as the Junior Sport's Personality of the Year at the Evening Gazette Sports Awards 2007 on Teeside.
| Torch Trophy Trust Award For Ken |
Last Thursday (29th November) the Central Council of Physical Recreation held their Torch Trophy Trust presentation evening. This recognises the efforts of sports volunteers from throughout the country. This year Ken Robertson was nominated by British Cycling to acknowledge his long standing participation in the sport and he was chosen by the CCPR to receive an award.

World Junior Team Sprint Champion Peter Mitchell is the latest in a number of young cyclists to be recognised by people in their local area and awarded the BBC South East Young Sports Person of the Year gong. It has been a great year for Peter who is part of the British Cycling Olympic Development Programme for Sprint events.

Track sprinter Jess Varnish and Cycle Speedway's Brian Buck were both honoured at the BBC Midlands Sports Awards last Sunday (Dec 2nd) at the National Motorcycle Museum near Solihull West Midlands.
| Times Accolades for Victoria Pendleton & Shanaze Reade |
Triple World UCI Track Champion, Victoria Pendleton from Stotfold in Bedfordshire, has received another accolade when at Lords Cricket Ground (London) she was named Sportswoman of the Year by the Times Newspaper. Victoria has already been awarded the British Olympic Association Trophy as the Olympic Athlete of the Year.

Double World Champion for Great Britain in Hand Cycling, Rachel Morris, has picked up a top award, winning the Best Newcomer 2007 Award at the Wheelchair Sports Awards held at the Madejski Hotel in Reading. It rounds off what has been a great year for Rachel. There was also this week more top awards for Anthony Kappes and Barney Storey won the BBC North West Disability Athlete of the Year Award

Maindy Flyer turned Tour de France hero Geraint Thomas has been finished third in the prestigious BBC Wales Sports Personality of the Year Award.
