British Cycling Statement: David Millar's Selection for the GB Team

Issued 4th September 2006

The decision to allow David Millar to be selected for the GB Road Race Team for the World Championships, following the completion of his two year ban for doping offences, was taken by the British Cycling Executive Board at a meeting earlier this year.

The view of the British Cycling Executive Board was that his sentence was appropriate to the nature of the offence and that, upon the completion of his sentence, he should once again be free to be selected by the GB Team for the Road World Championships, subject to him meeting their selection criteria.

British Cycling's President Brian Cookson, who chairs the organisation's Executive Board said:

"David has now served the sentence given to him in 2004 and he has subsequently made a clear, unequivocal, commitment to the ethical standards that we expect of all Great Britain team members."

"British Cycling operates a zero-tolerance policy on doping, so we fully expect David to live up to his commitments and on that basis, and on the basis of his race performances, he has been selected to represent GB at this year's World Road Race Championships."

"There is an expectation that David can become an ambassador for clean cycling and, if he can win major titles again, we believe that it will send out a strong anti-doping message."
