Smith's Belgium Victory
Cardiff rider Tom Smith took a racing excursion to Belgium at the weekend, starting with 22 laps of a 4km course at Zwevegem, Boldershof. The day started warm and sunny, with fast racing averaging 45km/hr. Smith made the most of a small cobbled section on each lap to make time throughout the race, until hailstones hit with 10km to go. Approaching the last kilometre a rider attacked and gained an instant 5 second gap. Another went inside the last 600 meters, but Smith countered the move and unleashed a ferocious sprint 300 meters to claim victory by two bike lengths. Results from Saturday HERE
Sunday saw the Welshman contest 16 laps of a 5.5km courses at Sint Baafs Vijve. Smith rode an attacking race despite the previous days exertions, claiming an early prime. With 15km to go Smith's penultimate break was brought back by the peloton, whereupon the race winning break went up the road, gaining 35 seconds by the 7km marker. Smith attacked again, attempting to bridge the gap alone, clawing back all but 3 seconds on the group by the line and ultimately ending the event in 10th. Barker in Lincoln Top Ten
Yanto Barker, riding for sponsors Team DFL finished eighth in this years Lincoln Grand Prix. Barker attacked with four laps of the infamous finishing circuits to go, but could not hold the pace of eventual winners and breakaway companions Russell and Dean Downing. Other Welsh performances of note include the Fujibikes pairing of Anthony Malarczyk and Gareth Jones who finished 12th and 33rd respectively, while Dale Appleby of the National Team completed the event with Gareth's group in 35th.
