Wales has found a new cycling star in Jonathan Pugh (Merida) who stormed to a fantastic fifth place Elite finish at round 2 of the National Mountain Bike series at Builth Wells last weekend. Pugh made the most of his second row griddling from the opening round to hold a top 15 position over the first four laps of the extraordinarily technical circuit which included two horrendous climbs each lap. The 'local' man then accelerated over the final two laps to pick off many exhausted competitors, working up to fifth at the line in only his second season of racing and the first as an Elite. Following behind were Steven Roach (Trek UK) in 20th and Lee Williams (leahrhys.co.uk) 33rd, both returning from illness, while Jamie Norfolk (Giant UK) failed to recover from an early puncture, rolling into a disappointing 48th. In other categories it proved a 1-2 for comeback riders Ryan Bevis (Merida) and Lewys Hobbs (Merlin) in the Expert category, while Rebecca James (Abergavenny RC) lost the Juvenile Girls lead in the closing minutes with a heavy fall, recovering to second. Brother Gareth completed the Youth Men in 11th with Sion O'Boyle in 7th and Anthony Farrell (Rhos-on-Sea CC) an excellent second, while Anthony O'Boyle (Newport Phoenix) rode to a strong fifth in the Junior Men's event.
