Wales leading off-road rider Steven Roach (SIS Trek) confirmed his promise as one of the countries hottest talents by winning the National Espoir (Under-23) Cyclo Cross title at Sutton Park in Birmingham last weekend. Roach claimed the title having previously won the National Trophy series in 2002/3 at just nineteen years old. The competitors started with nervous anticipation as they eyed the presence of six times former champion Roger Hammond (Discovery Channel), but Hammond was not present in the first lap dash which was led by Jody Crawforth (Evans Cycles RT) with Roach in close attendance. However, the Welshmans progress was hampered by his recent Commonwealth Games preparations as he slowly went back through the field, finishing among the top ten instead of his usual position near the head of the race. The other main protagonist in the Espoir category was Roachs teammate Ian Field, who went out shortly after mid distance when colliding with a tree in his attempt to hang onto the leaders. Other results from Welsh riders on the day included Talent Team riders Sion OBoyles (Newport Phoenix) seventh in the Juniors after a slow start and Gareth James (Abergavenny RC) ninth in the Youth event after being impeded in a first corner accident. Full results from the event can be found on the British Cycling website HERE |
