Welshman and GB Team rider Geraint Thomas is in hospital in Sydney, Australia after a nasty fall in training on the road. The 18 year old, who was expected to make his Senior World Championship debut next month in Los Angeles, spent the night in intensive care with suspected injuries to his spleen. He has now come out of intensive care, but is expected to remain in hospital for a few days whilst doctors keep him under observation. Track Team Manager Shane Sutton has seen Geraint and he reports that doctors do not consider his injuries to be life-threatening and that they expect him to make a full recovery.Thomas is one of the brightest young stars of British cycling and has been identified as a rider with the potential to go all the way in the sport. As the World Junior Scratch Race champion and the winner of the Junior version of the Paris-Roubaix road classic last season, he has already made a huge impact on the sport.
Welsh Cyclists Partake in Drug Awareness Course
Both Junior and Senior Welsh squad cyclists attended a drug awareness course hosted by UK Sport tutors this week. The course gave riders an insight into drug issues surrounding sport and details regarding testing programmes and the World Anti Doping Code. Welsh Cycling President Mr Bill Owen said 'Welsh Cycling is committed to drug free sport and are delighted to support the education of all our athletes'.
Winn Third at Perfs Road Race
After dominating the event last year, Julian Winn (Pinarello RT) found himself on the receiving end of the Recycling/MG team's tactics on Sunday, being outmanoeuvred in his pursuit of a repeat victory. Winn made one of the early breaks, splitting the field but it was 2002 World Points Race champion Chris Newton who soloed away to victory, leaving Winn to sprint for the remaining podium positions.
