Abergavenny RC again staged a successful promotion of this seasons National Trophy Cyclo Cross final at Abergavenny Leisure Centre. Racing throughout the day proved fast and furious as riders in all categories vied for the overall standings, with the closest finish of the day in the Senior/ Espoir main event.
The riders sprinted around lap one at a ferocious rate, with a lead group of the main protagonists soon forming. Local rider Steven Roach (SIS Trek) forced the early pace before feeling the effects of his Commonwealth Games preparations, falling from the lead group on lap three. Series leader Jody Crawforth (Evans Cycles) took up the pace setting with Espoir Ian Field (SIS Trek) and team mate Ian Wilkinson in tow.
Behind, a chase group of Paul Oldham (Hope Racing), David Collins, Nick Craig (both Scott UK) and visiting winner of the 2004 event Belgiums Ronnie Poelvoorde gave a relentless chase before Craig, winner of the National Title at this venue last year, broke clear to make contact with the leaders on the penultimate lap.
Craigs arrival saw Crawforth and Field go on the final lap attack with Crawforth gaining a small lead on his young rival. However, Field clawed the series leader back to unleash a powerful sprint and snatch victory by a matter of centimetres, with Craig rolling in third five seconds adrift. Roach rolled into ninth position to take second in the overall Espoir standings.
In other categories, Ben and Phil Roach (Rugby Velo) took commanding victories in the Youth and Veterans events respectively, whilst event organiser Graham Edwards of the promoting club snatched second in the Over 50s to claim second in the series behind runaway event and series winner Roy Hunt (SIS).
