With the sun beating down and a strong head wind on the start/finish straight conditions were almost perfect for some fast paced action. First Championship event to hit the circuit was the 3/4/V/W event. As soon as the flag was dropped the bunch set off a blistering pace. At the head of the field was Gerry Bowditch of Abergavenny CC, Steve Edwards, Steve Thomas and Courtney Rowe forcing the pace. After two laps the bunch began to split and the war of attrition was on for many of the riders. After various attacks throughout the race Gerry Bowditch managed to stay clear for 20mins before being pulled back in by the hard chasing pack. The main field headed into the final laps all together and it was anyone's race. In the final sprint it was a Gerry Bowditch who crossed the line first and claimed the Welsh title ahead of JIF riders Courtney Rowe and Steve Edwards. Ruby Miller produced a fantastic ride to stay with the main group and finish first out of the women to claim the Welsh Champions title.

All together the E/1/2/3 race tackles the short, sharp climb

The E/1/2/3 event set much the same as the previous race, straight from the gun. Attacks came thick and fast from Dale Appleby (Raleigh), Jon Mould (100% ME), Rhys Lloyd (Pendragon LeCol) and Ben Simmons (Wiggle) to name a few. Eventually the elastic snapped and it was Appleby who made a break for it. Rhys Lloyd chased hard and managed to close the gap and join Appleby to form a strong pairing. Both working well together and hold off the chase lead by Acadamy rider Mould and Wiggle rider Simmons. Both riders ended up stuck between the lead group and the chasing pack for rest of race. Going into the final laps it was clear the battle would come down to Lloyd and Appleby. The final time up the short climb onto the home straight and the head wind and neither rider were giving an inch, and an inch is what it came down to across the line. After much debate and looks back at camera shots and video, the final decision was given to Lloyd. Rhys Lloyd would claim the 2010 Champion System backed Crit Champions jersey for 2010 ahead of Road Race Champion Appleby and last years champion Ben Simmons.

The 2010 Crit Championships were a huge success and the crowds support said it all. The event was a fantastic way to show off cycling and it will hopefully continue next year. Welsh Cycling would like to thank Andrew Lindsay and his Velo Teifi Team for holding such a great event, Champion System for supplying the jerseys and all of the riders and supporters for attending the event and making it a great afternoon of racing.
